Title: September Fishing
Post by: Chazz on June 19, 2021, 01:06:56 PM
I have a tripped booked for last week in July but after the latest news on the border closure being extended things aren't looking very promising.  So now I am thinking about the possibility of a trip first week of September.  This will be on one of the ZEC area lakes not Kipiwa, should be similar though. Question is how does the fishing compare for these different times of the year.  Looking at walleye, northern pike and lake trout.

I fish all year long. For me, late Aug and through to the end of sept is the best time to go fishing.

I’ve fished Kipawa 3 years in a row in Sept, the fishing is great. Maybe a bit off July fish count, but not by much. The mornings seem slower than Summer mornings, but so am I .  The lack of leeches in the fall is the only disappointment for me, hate the mess of the broken crawler....lol  ;)

Thanks Hodgey and Jow - sounds promising.  Hopefully border opens and this isn't our second year in a row where we don't make it up there.

Hodgey - Jow,  Am I correct in assuming that all 3 species (walleye. lakers, and pike) should for the most part all be found in shallower waters in early September

Fall fishing usually has walleye in same if not a little deeper water and I usually fish laker in same water depths in early september, the close for spawning in september in most zones.

Thanks Ozzy - when you say you fish lakers in same depths what do you mean?  Same depths as the walleye.  If so then probably won't need to bring my portable downriggers then.

Sorry the same depth I do in summer, water temp usually won't drop that much early september most years, so the thermacline might be a little higher than mid summer but not much.  I would still be looking for suspended fish in the 30-45ft range.

The lake trout season in zone 13 west closes Sept. 12th.

OZZY - thanks again, trip is planned week of the 4th to Sasseginaga so I think we'll be OK with trout season but for sure I'll double check the regs.  Looks like portable downriggers will still be handy.  Our plan is mainly walleye with an occasional effort at lake trout and Northern pike.

Sass is a great body of water. Was at Bush Country years back when owned by Art. It was an early season trip and the fish were shallow and in post spawn spots. Hot spot at that time of year was Pickerel Bay…with a name like that, why would you not try there??? We’ll it was good. Well we also ventured to the north of camp, through the narrows. Was told of spots the saddle, rocking chair, cigarette rock and seagull rock. I think a fella Fishtildark steered me in the right direction. We only ever fished P Bay and the areas to the N of camp. This lake is far more secluded than Kipawa…hopefully in Sept it won’t be too busy at camp. Enjoy and good luck.

Kinda thought Lakers would be closed as they close in early September in Zone 18 in Ontario.
They spawn, the first full moon of October, up shallow and gravelly.

We mostly troll for lakers. 60fow is usually a great depth and they seem to be most active in the 25-40 ft range of that. We jig for walleye 19-23 fow in Sept.
