Is it too early for an ice out contest ?
hahahaha ice is just setting in! Guess it's never too early to start wagering guesses though!
When I was up last week i was advised to stay off the lake. It's a foot or so of semi frozen slush. Once the warm weather comes it might disappear quickly this year.
Hey
@puckster_guy any idea how thick the actual ice is though under the slush?
It was 12 inches on Dec 31 on Hunter's Lake.
Must be close to 2 feet now with all the recent cooler temps....?
Yup. It was knee deep when I was up a week ago. The ice on the lake never really set this year due to fluctuating temperatures. Slush never freezes properly.

Probably not, the added snow acts as an insulator thus preventing the cold temps to thicken the ice. Slush accumulates instead. Wish it was the opposite.
Snow levels are very high this year. We need a couple of mild days with some rain to pack all that fluffy snow.
I tried to quad in to my camp on Sunday and there were so many downed trees, I got tired of cutting.
The snow is waist high in the bush.
Lets try this contest closer to April, shall we?

Well your wish may come true, calling for +4c on monday Feb 4th with rain. I was out on the lake yesterday, jan 30th. There wasn't near as much slush as about 20 days ago, at least were I was sledding. Don't take this a general lake condition, this is just where I was, in the Bronson Island area. There still was some slush.
Hey I'm the new guy still trying to navigate the board.
Does anyone remember the date the ice went out last year

Yikes May 15th.
I'm hoping for May 1st.
Thanks puckster_guy
It's often out around the last week of April. I'm hearing of an early and warm spring. I hope so.
I'll go with April 20th! Good luck all.
My guess is May 3rd.
I was going for the 1st, but I see 'The Barge Guy' already called it.
But I am hoping we are both late, an earlier ice out should be good for all y'all northern folks.
I'll hazard a guess of April 25
I will go with April 28. (Don't think I saw that picked yet.). Stay warm everyone this next week!

Sorry Kyle, I already called May 8th :)
fishtildark, Dog and Kyle need to pick dates that haven't already been taken.

May
2, 13, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and on
Has Dog picked a new date?
Took a look at the year-over-year comparison on yesterday's date via the NASA satellite and compared how 'frozen' things are up north. Suffice it to say in an image comparing one year to the next (only a click of a button that you can toggle) you can see that last year's thaw was ahead of this year, but I would gauge not by much. Then again I have no idea...could be weeks ahead, but really can't tell that today without a time machine to go three weeks from now and look. At this time last year the lakes in the Kawarthas area were starting to open up more near moving water and Simcoe looked a bit darker, but not really open at all yet (same as this year). Georgian Bay was almost ice free on this date in 2018...2019...still large flows out there...
Anyway...there you go.

Bahahahah
Hi Nancy and everyone,
Dansar PM'd me to offer to take April 26 as his pick.
Your list is bang on otherwise. It's been a long winter folks.
I'm going snowmobiling this weekend in the Hunter's lake area.
Still lots of snow on the logging roads.
I'll go with 05/13/19
Wayne has cordially agreed to make the official call for ice out.
Cool
As always - thanks nancy!!!!
Looks like a little open water near Alwaki Lodge and down into Hunter's Lake on the satellite image. Maybe just a blip on the image...maybe I'm just seeing things...not sure.

I would be surprised if the ice was completely off by opener late year and next couple weeks won’t help matters much. Top layer is barely soft and not much rain and wind to break it up. If it is off it won’t be by much
This is in front of my place today. The current is doing a good job of breaking up the ice. The main lake is still frozen solid tho....I have a Loon living in the open water out in front lol. Didn't think they would be around yet.
Thanks for the pictures! I am starting to get nervous about my opening weekend trip.....
Hey
@limacharley Think I can cast a cleo out into the open water? LOL ;D ;D ;D I figure next week. Geez Louise, Last year it was almost open.
Safe bet there will be atleast floaters for opener maybe more.
Red Pine opening up a bit every day. There is hope...
Looks like a gorgeous day
@puckster_guy !
Great pics keep them coming! My May 4th ice out date is a bust but hopefully some warmer weather comes in May for our opener guys. I'm up the first week of June and i'm getting nervous/curious to see how the water levels/temps will effect the fishing.
June will be fine if anything 6 inches high
Snowing quite a bit here in Temiscaming, about an inch and half on the ground and still snowing. Grrrrr
LOL
May 12 is looking good
It appears my guess of today is a good week off.
I would say two weeks from now not much sooner
Ya, sounds about right. The bay in front of me is ice free and the main lake is clearing up. not fast enough. water under the bridge is fast and furious. most I've ever seen. water levels are rising fast and there is still a lot of snow to melt.
Water under the bridge is due to a large drop that is right in the center once the main law rises this drop will even off. More run off will actually make it better and easier to pass under
Lake levels are now almost at summer levels and rising fast. I met some roads ministry guys at the bridge yesterday. They were sent out to inspect all the local bridges and roads. Even the gov't is concerned about the water levels and bridges. I'm hoping all the extra water in the lake will help break up the ice.
Generally when lake is up fish extremely shallow water especially in June we don’t fish Water more then 10 to 15 feet at most. Opener go deeper 25 feet
Wouldn’t doubt you see the lake drop a bit when they open up the damm
(http://i63.tinypic.com/10zn49i.jpg"%20border="0"%20alt="Image%20and%20video%20hosting%20by%20TinyPic"></a>)
Taken today at govt dock in Kipawa, ice not even black yet, it will still be some time yet..... Water level from what I saw about 2 feet below summer level, which in my opinion is quite high for this time of the season.

Might be awhile before they open the dam at Laniel, the town of Temiscaming has purchased a thousand sandbags in case the levels continue to rise on Lake Temiscamingue, to protect homeowners in low lying areas just north of Temiscaming.
Due to the current my end is about half open. Lake is almost at summer levels here already.
It won’t be open for opener unless we get one heck of a rain and wind
Got a note from Brian at Alwaki over the weekend...said it looked like "at least another 10 days", and that was a few days ago. Hope the outfitters can get ready in time for opener. Sat image as of yesterday looks like the lake is softening in some spots.

This is May 5
You can see some open water in the north
I think that would be Laniel at the river outlet
It will be 10 days anyways down grindstone way
If it is open for opener I would very careful there will floaters around for sure that will rip your aluminum open like a tin can
Opened the cottage at Baie Dorval this weekend. Lots of ice but it is starting to soften with some dark spots and open water around shore and islands . Ice around my docks loosening up but its a few feet thick in spots and am worried about damage as water is rising . Think it will be a close call to have the lake clear for opening weekend .
Long time follower of the board, finally registered today. I'm hearing with the heavy winds and rains and water level the lake could be open near kipawa village as early as tomorrow. Any locals thoughts are appreciated? TIA

Well since you asked, I was at the lake thursday may 9th. The bay in front of Migizy's is totally open with some floaters. The ice is very dark on the sides but not so towards the middle of Green's Lake. I've had some more experienced locals tell me 1 week and another said 2 weeks, so let's average and say 10-12 days? It poured all day today with some wind which should help the situation.
Thanks for the response crunchie. Here's hoping its sooner than that. Cheers.
Red Pine in front of my place is almost completely open. MacLauglin lake (the eastern half I can see) is 50% open and looking south to Ferguson bay is still mostly ice covered.
Opener is off the table ice there will still be ice out on the main parts
Wow
That's a first
Ice fishing for opening day
Lower part south of McKenzie is still locked in somewhat long narrows is open grindstone 50 percent locked in. If by a miracle it opens up there is still a chance wind will block your path from shifting Ice
Although last year on this weekend ice was 40 feet offshore and weekend after (opener) was clear. Mind you last year the ice was crystallized so didn’t take much this year not so much
It has been awhile but have seen ice at opener
In your semi-professional opinion, do you think the ice will all be gone by September 1,2019 which is my week on Kipawa.
We received these photos this morning from Jawbones Bay, its pretty well open not sure about the rest of the lake
https://www.facebook.com/pg/KipawaLakePreservationSociety/photos/?tab=album&album_id=2085435224912142
but compare this to only a few days ago (May 7th and 8th) in the same location

Just to ease everyone's mind about the ice conditions for opening. I launched my Lund this afternoon in Kipawa and made it to Corbeau island. (no issues other than some chunks) Couldn't find a safe route through the ice to continue. Decided to try again tomorrow afternoon. I will let everyone know the official ice out date when I reach the lodge. Opening week should be awesome fishing!!
Wow, really surprised you got that far from what I saw yesterday afternoon. I guess all that rain did some awesome damage. Every time I go into my garage, my boat is screaming, get me the heck out of here.

Thanks for the report Wayne. I'll bet you and Barb are both happy that you won't have to take the back way in like last year. Have a great season!
Jay
Just to let everyone know that we boated in to the lodge this afternoon. No issues until Alwaki. Had to go on the North side of the island to bypass an ice jam. So I guess May 11th would be the official ice out date. Congrats to the lucky winner. Yes Jay it was alot easier this year coming in from Kipawa with our water taxi"s, than the canoe trip we did last year!! Hope everyone has a great fishing season.
Ok, so
@wayne has called it. May 11.
@fishtildark, you are the lucky winner. I will be sending you a PM. Thanks Wayne for being the official for us.
Congratulations
@fishtildark !
I was going to guess May 11 too...………. ;D
