Title: Quebec Border Closing
Post by: Goach15 on March 28, 2020, 05:44:43 PM
Praying that  everyone is well and staying safe during this troubled time. Quebec has closed the border at Temiscamingue ( Kipawa region )  as of 4:00 today . Only traffic allowed is for Humantarian reasons .Any Quebec citizens returning to Quebec are being mandated to self isolate for 14 days . Hopefully this virus begins to subside sooner than later .  :(

I have a camp in Quebec.
Live in Ontario.
Will I be able to cross at Temiscaming?
I have no symptoms.

I too live in Ontario and have a cottage on Kipawa. From what I understand we wont be able to go to our cottages until the ban is lifted.

Being a Quebec tax payer 'might' make a difference.

and self isolate

How long is the ban?

I was planning on leaving monday or tuesday. I had no idea they would close the border. I spent friday shopping for the trip. stores are open but not very busy. I had no idea they would close the border. I heard one guy from Thorne was turned back at the border. He was going to the IGA and was told to shop in N Bay. I have my Jeep filled with groceries, water and supplies looks like I'm staying home till they open the border. darn.

Honestly, I think we should stay put and see what happens with this. I know it sucks , but we won't be going up until Quebec says we can. Take care everyone.

They do an excessive amount of modeling here in the states, but each area is unique on how fast the virus spreads, etc.

Here in Ohio (no identified 'hot spots' yet like NY, NJ, Chicago, Detroit), they're not calling for the 'peak' of the outbreak until mid-May and they're predicting up to 10K cases PER DAY at that point. Holy s&!#.

I'm hoping for the best, but I can't see how our late-May trip to Alwaki is going to happen; at this point I'm hoping our late-July trip will still happen.

Stay healthy...stay home.

Hi everyone.....
I must admit, we have been going to camp (north of Mattawa, Ontario side) as we can do so, door to door, without interacting with anyone so we felt we were still respecting the social distancing rules. Feel free to judge me on this, maybe our thinking has been flawed.
Other than trips to camp, we have been holed up at home like hermits for the last three weeks.

Anyhow....here is the bit I know about the QC border crossing from family....(take it all with a grain of salt, as this is coming through me second hand).

Some family of ours were up in the Kipawa area over the weekend.
They crossed into QC before the decision was made about the border (I don't believe there was much of a warning) but returned home Sunday morning after the border was closed (border was closed 4:00pm Saturday evening, as already mentioned above).
They were told they would not be allowed to return into QC until ~ May 1st (estimated by QPP officer from what I understand).
The QC border hasn't been closed entirely, only certain crossings to limit traffic in certain regions, it seems Temiscaming and north is the bulk of this closure (a link above shows the 8 currently closed crossings).

These closed crossing are closed to all those entering QC except those coming in for work / emergency.
From what I understand even those going in for work (many residing in Ontario work at Tembec for example) are not even allowed to go up into Temiscaming, just straight to work.

As I mentioned, take this all with a grain of salt as everything I've mentioned is second hand, forgive any misunderstanding I may be conveying.

As mentioned by T-Bone, when you look at the math, the numbers don't lie. The infection rate (chances of getting sick if in close contact with a carrying person) are brutally high (50-60%) and the doubling rate has been shown to happen in 2-3 days where no social distancing measures were taken so it's pretty significant indeed.

Wisers   Thanks for the info
I was hoping to get up there to the camp April 16   So May 1 is doable for sure.

My opinion   You are not doing anything to promote the Covid 19 by going to your camp on  the Ontario side.  You have no contact with anyone.

Stay safe and Healthy

My thinking is I would go straight to camp except for a stop to buy beer. However I could buy beer here then no stops until I get to Red Pine.

Yea Puckster    The QPP likely would not let you in.  My opinion only.

We can just hope it reopens sooner than May 1.

I feel for you Puckster, we could make it there door to door, but won't make it past the border. I have a week's holidays mid May, hoping we have that virus under control by then,  Take Care everyone, stay safe!

Yes Michelle    We have to hope the border is open by May 1 or even sooner.

We need to wish  That's all we can do. Wash your hands and stay home.

Stay Safe and Healthy.

MAN! I get it but I am certainly concerned and hope everyone is safe! We already had to cancel our trip to Rainy River, Minn on April 7th. We don't even know if we are getting our money back :(

If I can't go to Alwaki on the opener, I think I'll just go bonkers!

My thinking is this bug should be peaking now, Everybody who going to be infected probably is by now. This keeping people home is preventing the spread even further. I hope thibs will be closer to normal in 2 to 3 weeks when the worst is over. Stay positive and stay healthy.

As of today at 1 PM, the number of new COVID-19 cases in Ontario is still on an exponential rise - consequently, still worrisome.

I was at Costco this morning at 8 AM (Costco is opening from 8 to 9 AM for those over 60 during this COVID era) to resupply paper towels and toilet paper. When I arrived, there were approximately 50 people in front of me. Everyone adhered to proper social distancing. I was allowed to purchase 1 package of paper towels (12 rolls). There was no toilet paper to be had.

I'm hopeful that I and my fishing colleagues will be able to do our mid August fishing trip. To that end, I purchased a new low profile baitcasting reel today. So, still being positive!

Stay safe everyone.

Jay

Well Puck...I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but this virus is loooong from peaking in North America according to history and 'how' the virus spreads. Social distancing has really just started...and the virus continues to explode. Here is the states Virginia just went to stay-at-home order through June 10th...but even after social distancing "ends" the virus can still transfer easily given the right circumstances. I can't imagine life getting back to normal until at least mid-summer...if not later than that.

And GregL...I'm with you, but I think the chances of the lodges being "open" by opener is really wishful thinking at this point. If I were a betting man, I'd bet big bucks against it.

Stay healthy all...and stay home.

Interesting. I was at the Costco on HWY 7 near Bolton on friday to stock up for my trip to camp. I got there around 9:30 and waited in a line up with the appropriate distancing. It took about a half hour to get in and the store had about half the normal crowds inside. It had TP and Paper towels plus everything else I needed to stock up on for my first trip to camp. Different store, different stock i guess. I prefer to be optimistic that this will end sooner rather then later, however time will tell.

As Tbone mentioned, we "US" have not even come close to a peak yet as the rates in large metro areas are exploding. Our Governor "PA" has closed all non life essential bushiness to remain closed until April 30. Last week we had 1800 cases, now over 4000. Best case scenario i heard from our CDC is 200,000 deaths across the US, only if rules are adhered to.

The link below is to an interactive GIS based map being updated by the John Hopkins University.  WARNING! May cause anxiety attacks and excessive alcohol consumption, if you could buy it here.  :-\

I hope everyone is OK and doing their part to not potentially spread the disease. As a side note, if I had a camp at Kipawa and could hold enough supplies for a couple of months, I think that would be the safest place to be. As long as you remained isolated and not going in and out of town. Does the QPP take a evening break  ::) Kidding! Honest  ???

My worthless two cents.
Who would want to go to Quebec right now anyways?
Quebec is the worst province to be in with the highest COVID percentage.
STAY HOME.
Don't be selfish

Tamiscaminge had 14 cases the other day when I talked to a friend.

Don't need it this year.
Hopefully September will work

I'm not optimistic and sorry to say, nobody else should be at this time.

Agree with Rhybak. Was hoping to spend a lot of time up there this year starting some construction. Now I'm hoping for NEXT spring ,hopefully. Everyone take care ,stay safe and maybe we can talk Puck into hosting a big bash when this clears up!!

Agreed as well with Rhybak, although our camp is not in Quebec, we've canceled all travel until things calm down.

Yves, from Taggart Bay, put an update on his web site. Not good news for those going early in the season. There's still hope for July and beyond, but even that is iffy. I can't blame him, safety first, for the guests and his crew.
