Title: Border Closure to mid-2021
Post by: BigChief on August 13, 2020, 01:18:12 PM
Read an article today that mentioned the real possibity of the border remaining closed until mid-2021. That starts to put next year's trips at risk and will all but destroy some outfitters to miss that much revenue. Hopefully it doesn't come to fruition but what the heck are we going to do if it goes that long or longer.

If the USA doesn't get control of this virus, what did you expect?
Wear masks, stay 2M apart (that's about 6.5 feet) Keep your social circle very small, don't leave your home unless essential (groceries, gas, health care etc)

You can do this!

Didn't start this post to get into arguments, but I refuse to live in fear of something with such a low mortality rate. Nothing will end until herd immunity is achieved.

Besides fishing is the most socially distant activity you can do. I could come to Kipawa with everything I need and never come into contact with another person.
This is just causing me to fish more in PA and may make me less likely to come back to Canada. This could end some outfitters for good.

Don't worry

The Canadians can't travel much either so they are finding out more about the outfitters and starting to go to them this year.
I've been up three times to Kipawa this year.
Taggart Bay is starting to get a lot of local business.
Two Moons is still struggling
Smith Bay is closed for the season
3Seasons is full most of the season

I've been to Alwaki twice and they are doing good as well.  Unfortunately until it gets under control I don't mind the border being closed.  I missed the trip with the Ohio and Pennsylvania guys this year but we haven't had more than 25 cases in our whole county and would like to keep it that way.  They are talking about pretty much shutting down our minor hockey up here.  For most canadians that's worse than a fishing trip or two.  Lets all do our part and we will be sitting on a porch together enjoying a frosty beer next year.  Everybody stay safe.

I didn't post this comment to get into an argument either, but you know this virus has not exhibited any potential for 'herd immunity'. If you get it, you can get it again in as little as 4-5 months later.

I can say one thing for sure...I don't want it...I don't want anyone in my family to get it...and I don't want any of my friends to get it.

Somehow in all of this, I've lost some respect for some Americans. There seems to be a mentality out there that "liberty" means you can do whatever you want independent of government influence. Sorry people...that's just not the case.

Put your mask on. Practice social distancing. Wash your hands. Even a kid can follow those simple rules.

Well said T-Bone couldn't agree with you more.  I'm fortunate enough to be married to a Canadian citizen.  This allows me to still have the ability to cross the Canadian border.  My wife and I were there in June and July for approx 5 weeks.  I was able to see first hand how serious this pandemic is being taken by the people in that country.  That is the reason they pretty much have it in control.  I completely understand why the vast majority of the people up there do not want visitors from the states crossing the border.  I know there is a huge population difference between the US and Canada but when the US is averaging over a 1000 deaths per day and Canada is averaging around 5 one can plainly see why they don't want us up there.

Totally agree with you T-Bone! I work with the public and have to wear a mask at work every day and I stay 6 feet away from anyone who refuses to wear one....I'm not living in fear, just prefer to keep my family safe! I feel for the Americans who have such high numbers...but until this is under control, I hope the border stays closed as well.

Just a couple of comments...

I read an article this morning by Frances Carruthers...HOW THE LAST GLOBAL PANDEMIC CHANGED THE WORLD. Very interesting. America was slow to react and lost 500,000 people then. But the article points to differences between large cities that enforced stricter controls of people versus cities that didn't. St Louis vs Philly was an example given.

Outfitters-you know when the only Sportsman shows you go to to promote your business are American ones and then the border shuts them out....what do you expect? Here's a thought, start targeting Canadians. Why put all your eggs in one basket? I operate a manufacturing business. 75% of my work is with one company. I'm constantly promoting my business to diversify our customer base. What if that one company went bankrupt or moved to Europe?? When I took over, that percentage was 95%. I'm still working on it. Just getting into Defense products now.

I'm glad you feel like I do TBone. Some people are thinking these measures are put in place to control us. heck, it's to stop the spread of this virus. Flatten the curve folks and things will get back to normal more quickly. Some people are crying that they can't go fishing in Canada. sniffle, sniffle sniffle....People's lives are at stake here. Way more important than your fishing trip.

@BigChief -you couldn't get here without buying gas, speaking with border officials, buying groceries, leeches and beer...so yes you could come into contact with  many people.

@limacharley - groceries, leeches and beer are brought with me. Gas is paid by card at the pump. So the only contact is with a border official who can choose to touch my passport or view the information as I hold it up to them.

@T-Bone Currently there is no verifiable evidence that once you get it, you can get it again in 4-5 months. If you have something on that I would be interested to read it.

With my wife and mother at high risk and my dad already given about 5-6 yrs to live with a lung disease.  Catching covid once is more than enough.  I do feel for everybody that can't do what they always have but we are all making sacrifices. We really all should stop thinking about ourselves and sacrifices we have made and maybe think about all the needless deaths caused by covid.  Stay safe my friends

As a residents of NY state my buddies and I got to see what this virus can do.. I still dont understand why my fellow countrymen refuse to do what's good for our country and put a simple mask on and stay 6 feet from each other?  ..I'm going to be going back into a classroom in the coming weeks with 15 kids and I am a bit nervous ( I have a 93 old father and 85 year old mother ) My hope is the scientists in the world work their magic and we get a control of this.
I can not blame the Canadians for closing us out I think I would want the US to do the same thing if the circumstances were reversed.  Lets hope the US residents get smarter and the virus takes a beating so we all can sit around next year and get back to reporting our great fishing trips.

Heard or read that several weeks ago...not sure of source and really don't believe almost any news source to tell the straight-truth these days anyway. All I could see with a quick look today was they (whoever that is) said it was 'unlikely' you could get it twice...but then again...they just don't know yet. I can tell you one thing...I'm not going to throw myself into a pool of Covidiots to become a data point they can reference to solve an unknown.

I recognize the mortality rate is relatively low....but again, I'm not taking any chances as the people I know that have had it say it's the worst sickness they've every experienced in their life...and the effects of it last several weeks...not several days. No thanks.

All, I love the discussion and I simply just want to remind all to lets keep it at the respectful level - Nancy for years, and recently with a little of my help (and others on the admin team) have promoted a Kipawa fishing-focused forum.

As a high risk person myself, and I have both my parents now in a cancer battle, it is about being risk-averse and that means we are taking every precaution in my family - do I still see friends and fish... sure do, but it really is easy to do it outside, wear a mask and stay 6 feet apart and wash/sanitize hands frequently.

Agree'd, this is one forum of 5 or so "Motorcycles, cooking, baking, pizza & fishing" I occasionally participate in and this is the friendliest group of any by far!

This is a hot button issue and should not create friction between us here and/or between our two countries. Its a world wide problem exasperated by population densities as well as governmental controls/freedoms. We all need to do what we can, I'm doing my part while the caretaker for my 80 YO dad in poor health. The media here wants all of us to look like buffoons..... We aren't. If you look at the death rates per 100k population, there's a laundry list of countries in the same if not worse position than the US, CNN doesn't want you to know that.

Country   Pop     Deaths      Deaths per 100k     Pop density per Sq Mile

Peru           32m      26k                  80.2                            65
UK           67m      47k                  70.2                           725
Spain        47m       29k                  60.9                           240
Italy           60m      35k                  58.0                           518
Usa         328m     167k                  50.6                            87
Brazil      209m     105k                  50.5                            64
Canada   37.5m      9k                   24.1                            10

I can't wait for the day that this is no longer a massive problem and I can come visit my Canadian friends!

I told Mattie that if they open the border in October or November we're taking a road trip. Yeah...won't likely find a fishing opportunity, but we're coming up.

And Rhybak...I appreciate the offer. I may just ship myself up there on a load we have going to our Mississauga office....shorter pick-up trip for you...  ;)

The outfitters have a plan in place for cleaning the cabins. It's obviously working if they have Canadian customers. And I have my own boat, so no worries there.

As for following orders, you obviously don't know what Warrant Officers are then.

But at no point in this discussion did I ever say I don't social distance or wear a mask when needed. I just said I don't live in fear or stay in my house the whole time.
I started the post as a simple discussion about the possibility of the border being closed into 2021 and how it would affect both sides of the border. I was not the one that started accusations or name-calling.

@Hodgey1 like the stats, the US media definitely never shows things like that.

Hi T-Bone - RE: Bay of Quinte

I live about 1.5 hours north of the Bay of Quinte - excellent open water and ice fishing for Walleye (HUGE Walleye). Check Bay of Quinte ice fishing on line - many outfitters. Only issues in the winter are ice conditions - it's a huge body of water and mild winters can make things iffy.

Granted.
You follow orders.
You follow protocol.
Prove it at the border.
You have over 200 million residence in the US.
Your numbers are high.
Mayor and Governors are concerned about the actual numbers.
How do you expect to have the borders open and prove that you are a safe person.
The bad apples are spoiling the whole bushel.
Good citizens like yourself have to suffer the actions of the many.
Borders are closed, Fishing is put on hold.
No body died. Life goes on.
