Post by: Goach15 on March 09, 2021, 07:28:40 PM
I noticed that Alwaki Lodge is for sale on Kijiji . Maybe some of our the Alwaki regulars can pool together and buy it!

That's not a bad idea really. If I didn't already have my own place I'd go for something like that.

It went up for sale last season.  It would be a shame if it was a private sale thats for sure.

Take it from me, if you like repairs and upgrades and want to give up all your fishing time, buy a lodge. One building is easier to maintain then several!!

LOL Wayne. Just owning and maintaining my little camp is taking all my time. I couldn't imagine owning a camp and dealing with guests who break things. Your welcome to come here as a guest bro. I won't put you to work except as a net man lol

Hey Puckster, You have me confused with someone else on the board.  However, you are  right owning a lodge is a lot of work and you have to have lot's of patience. Still have to head down your way some day. Maybe this summer, with the border still being closed I will have some extra time to fish some new spots.

I think its worth every penny of that considering the prices I see on individual camps.

I never did know how much of the island Carl and Mary owned. I know at one point they had an outpost camp somewhere down the back side of the island but I never saw it and I trolled that run many times. Anyone know how much property is included?
Plowjock I did an online search for Alwaki Lodge for sale and came up empty. Do you have a link?

Smitty55, I don't have a link. I saw it on Face Book on Sunday and my friend had told me he had seen it posted on Kijiji.

I have great memories of our stays at Alwaki Lodge when Carl and Mary owned it, we spent our family vacations there as kids so that our parents could fish and spend time with Gus & Dixie. I am thrilled that we ended up with the Sunnyside Camp, so close to so many spots of great memories.

Very Jealous Erin!

As for Alwaki, I've seen the advertisement a few places now  (Kijiji?, Facebook for sure and now the website which Hodgey posted).  Such a beautiful spot and the work Brian and Rob and family have put into it the past 15 years is substantial.

Common lottery #'s!!!!!    ;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't think you could pay  me enough to run a resort. It's a big job looking after guests and equipment. Hats off to those that do. For a group to buy in for themselves and maybe rent out a cabin or two for upkeep. I think that could work well.

Brian and family have done a lot of work to Alwaki, I remember seeing the loads that they were hauling out of there.

Stu and I have our fair share of work ahead at Sunnyside, it will be worth it, if you see our lund parked at the dock, stop in for a cold one or two !

Brian told me last summer and it was either just under 2 acres or 3.  I want to say just under 3 but memory is getting old.

Ahhhhh.....if only I was a younger man, I'd jump at the chance.

Wayne-Maybe you could explain how you and Barb did it? You guys were in your late 20's early 30's when you started right??
I'm sure everyone here would love to read your story.

Well it was 1987, saw an ad in Ontario Out Of Doors Magazine, Camp for sale. Called the number, found out where it was located. Spent 1 night there in June looked around, caught lot's of walleye, close to camp. Most important thing when considering a purchase like that. Place needed lot's of work, no problem. Young and eager. Went back in August with the better half spent 1 night again. Still caught fish. Apparently a slow time, Really?? Made an offer, closed the deal in March of 1988 and jumped in with both feet. Sold my house for down payment. My 3 girls were 16 months, 3 and 4 1/2.  Would I do it all over again, in a heart beat. That's all my girls talk about is spending their summers in Kipawa. They grew up working right beside us learning the value of earning a living. I think that's why they are successful in there businesses and lives today. Really proud of their achievements. Now the grandkids are enjoying it and the oldest ones are working for me and loving every minute.   Was it tough? of course!!  Nothing easy. If it was  easy than  its' not rewarding! We  can't wait to get back there and start season number 34.  In my opinion no better way of life,  There you go Lima Charlie, 34 seasons condensed into a 1 minute read, LOL!. See you on the lake soon!

Thanks Wayne-I can appreciate all the hard work you, Barb and the kids have done over the years. You truly have an awesome lodge.

This summer, I hope you guys are full up. I enjoy talking to your guests that fish in front of my camp.

God knows we need tourism.

Very nice condensed version of the last 30 some years @wayne . I hope things are going to improve for you soon. Ive only boated past and read comments, but it appears you run a beautiful lodge. So nice to hear children enjoying their time growing up there as well. Good for you for teaching them a work ethic, It is lost on so many these days.....

Thanks Hodgey,  Really proud of my girls. All are successful. Not sure if you know this but, our second has a masters degree and became a marine biologist. She did the first study of catch and release on walleye on Kipawa Lake. After an entire season of documenting facts from my participating guests the mortality rate was 9%. Very low, which was great news. We now know those big and small  fish we throw back do survive. She also started the Kipawa Lake Preservation Society. Providing valuable information about the detrimental effects to the environment from rare earth mining in the Kipawa Watershed. I am hopeful that this will continue so that your and my grandkids can enjoy the beauty and serenity that Kipawa has to offer!

Just to be clear-Alwaki may own 2.8 acres but the island is approximately 32 acres of land.
There's no one else on it.
