Title: Records of Largest Fish of each Species caught in Lake Kipawa
Post by: plowjock on April 22, 2021, 07:33:33 AM

Spent most of yesterday afternoon going over plenty of Posts on here.
Have to say I was impressed with quite a few of them regarding trip reports.
Just wondering if any of the Outfitters have records of Big Fish caught on Kipawa.
Did see some reports of T who has amassed some terrific numbers for a weeks fishing of 499 walleyes with 4 guys fishing.
Really wonder if that group ever got any sleep,
I know what it's like to go out and just have a slayfest in the Fall on Smallies or Largies with Jerkbaits100 to 150 fish with
just 2 guys in the boat. Nothing really excitingly large but very busy and adrenalin flowing. Mind you , it was cold water
  temps at 38 *F
Did see where Rejean from 3 Seasons caught an 11 lb. Walleye not far from camp. Also saw in one report about a 42in. Pike
being caught. Somebody else has a decent Laker, somebody else had caught a decent White Fish. Let's try and find out what
the largest fish caught of each species in Kipawa is

Not looking for locations or any information where or what was used to catch them. Hopefully info like this could be used by
Outfitters to get more clients into this Fantastic Fishery.

I know Kathy E. caught a 42'+ pike at TBL. Probably not the largest, but still a nice fish.

Nice one for sure. My best up there was 11.5lb and 31 1/2". 10:30 at night with an Ugly Bug and a worm dragging bottom. Same year in my boat my buddy picked up a 10.5lb laker. Both within sight of Corbeau Island. We each won the weekly derby at Corbeau that year, paid for the booze at least.

I do know that the north end of the lake used to be a premier flyin destination in the 50s. 30 pound lakers were possible as were 20 pound northerns.

I know Brian from Alwaki got a dandy walleye several years back...like 13.3 pounds, just around the corner from the camp. My nephew Mattie nailed a nice 17 pound laker (his first laker on Kipawa) a few years ago when he went out for a midday troll with Ozzy...over by Corbeau Island, I believe. I got him a blown-up canvas pic of that for Christmas in 2019....he still is so proud of that fish...to this day!

Long time Alwaki visitors will remember that 23 lb  Laker Carl had mounted behind the bar at the main lodge. He caught that one on a canoe spoon trolling across the end of the island.

I'd be very interested in all time records of each species for Kipawa

Chiaro, this was what I am trying to find out. So far, we have some info as to what the Personal Bests have been of a few
people. Hope we can achieve some actual all time species records on Lake Kipawa. Just hope some of this history hasn't been
lost. maybe some former Lodge or Outfitters may have older knowledge.

Not Lake Kipawa , but years ago our group managed a 32 lb. lake trout and a year later a 15.5 lb walleye

55 pounder is the type of Laker you go go Great Bear for. If only you had a shot at that type of fish now.

I talked to a friend who's in his mid 70s and has been around that lake since his 20s at a former lodge. He's seen pictures and guessed the largest for walleye he's seen is 16 lbs. pike...33lbs. Trout...40 lbs. He fishes for walleye so that guess is probably the most accurate.

14.2 pound pickerel about 10 years ago however I have seen much bigger beside the boat on a few occasions in some secluded zec lake

Biggest I have ever seen was about 20 years (we never weighed it however have a picture) I suspect it was around 16 to 17

We have talked about this with ministry up there many times say they see lots pushing 20 when they are tagging around red pine in the spring

I figure the vastness of this lake and the amount of baitfish that are in it, it has to rival some of the great Northwestern Canada lakes. There is so much variation in depths, creating spawning areas galore. From what I have read in previous trip reports there has to be one fantastic walleye group with some numbers up to 100 fish a day being caught. Haven't done it with walleyes, yet, but have had a few days of over 100 bass and crappies, all on jerkbaits. This was on another lake on the Rideau system. Keep the thinking caps on, we'll soon have a pretty decent idea of what GIANTS to exist in Lake Kipawa.

I have had the pleasure over the years of catching a few ten LB plus walleye. My boy blew away any sort of personal best when he caught a hog of a fish 2013!!!  14Lb 5OZ walleye. I've tried to upload a pic but it's too large.  We released her. I remember up until a few years ago when we would troll for trout back in Dead Bear Bay the huge marks we would see on the fish finder. We always wondered what they were.

It wouldn't surprise me if those marks were big Pike. On one trip a buddy of mine had the leader on his gang troll cut clean 3 times in two days in DBB after a massive strike. No way it was a Laker.

That makes sense.  Wasn't sure if lake sturgeon were that far north.  We also have had marks like that on Hunter.  Close to Gull island and the point off of Kipawa lodge.

You will find them in some lakes all the way to Jame's bay.

I was at Bush Country on Sasaganaga in 2008 and Art had a walleye mounted that he claimed was 20 pounds hanging on the wall.
