Although we have heard some positive developments with regards to re-opening plans from both Quebec and Ontario, I have yet to hear a timeline for the border re-opening. Has anyone heard anything official?
I have not but I have been looking it up. Still says essential only travel across the border. I know they are doing roaming check points on the Quebec border at my place. I know some people have been turned around at our border crossing but it was because of going to stock the fridge not to fish. I was talking to Bryson Lodge today and they are taking bookings as if we can get across the border to fish in quebec.
It looks like Ontario and Quebec are in unison are the border closure. Hopefully when the stay at home order ends in June 2nd in Ontario the border closures will also end as Quebec has already opened.
Trying to find out information on the border status between Ontario and Quebec. Someone sent me this link this morning as to an extension (#6)...which if it holds will screw up our trip June 5. Anyone else find out anything please post. https://www.ontario.ca/laws/regulation/r21381
The border closure in Ontario is got non residents only, I believe residents can still cross from Quebec to Ontario. However, the current restrictions are Quebec not allowing Ontario residents to cross, which hasn’t been extended yet. However I assume if Ontario is so will Quebec

That sucks for you guys heading up the 1st week of June. This thing can't end soon enough!
Beyond frustrated at this point. You can have 2600 people in Montreal attend a hockey game but I can't travel from non problem area to isolate in a cabin for a week. Thanks GTA for making Ontario a f****** prison. Holy heck our province sucks!!
Sorry but needed to vent. I know I'm not alone.
Kyle I can relate to your frustration. I'm 45 and I have had the pleasure of fishing the wonder of Lake Kipawa since I was twelve. My late Father introduced me to the awesomeness of that great body of water. This will be the second year that I have not be rewarded the opportunity to enjoy the opportunity to get away from everything and enjoy the experience. I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe!!
This is an absolute joke.
This ban is cutting it close for those of us scheduled to go in on the 18th
I hope it’s not extended further
One would think that approximately 60% vaccinated, numbers dropping daily, summer weather and we would see restrictions relaxed? Instead we get another 2 week extension on inter-provincial borders and other very low risk items such as camping. Not sure when the Quebec/Ontario border will reopen. Seeming more and more political.
Don't be so harsh
After a year and a half of this, you should be accepting it by now.
It may not stem on the facts that you pointed out but more about how full the ICU's are.
those are the numbers the provinces want to see drop.
Get the hospitals emptied and not increased.
What will be will be.
I agree with Campkipawa. The province was not prepared for any emergency relative to hospital beds needed for this kind of an emergency. They didn't even have enough beds and staff for the population as it was. The shut downs could have been avoided if they were ready with the appropriate number of extra space needed before. A couple of years ago just before my Dad died we rushed him to the new hospital in downsview. He spent 4 days in a crowded hallway and was discharged back to the nursing home before he needed to or was ready to leave. A lot of this is political BS.

It’s all political at this point. Make no mistake. If u think it’s about the virus anymore or cases or rates or hospital rooms you need to find another source of information. There are plenty of ICU beds for the current state...I’d bet <25% of capacity now...likely way less. Who’s gonna blink first...Joe or Justin? Answer: Who needs the money more?

That sucks!

We now have two provinces side by side which are officially opening yet a border in between that remains closed and articles stating it could stay that way in intervals of 14 days. Where is the data to support that border crossing is a meaningful spreader of covid? Key word......meaningful. It's political.
Agree. Remember all this at election time.
Just heard on the news tonight from the Quebec Premier that he been talking to the the Ontario Premier and the border might open in a few days, finger cross guys!!!!!

That headline states the border will be closed until until at least early July. Pretty well everyone 2 months ago would have been overjoyed with that headline. Infection numbers continue to plummet, we are below 500. Everything is looking good, especially now that we are starting to give the 2nd dose.
If you look at what Trudeau is saying...in that he wants 75% of our population to have one vaccine shot before he opens the border...First off, kids under 12 can't get vaccinated yet, Second, a certain percentage (wouldn't be surprised if it is as high as 10-15%), won't get vaccinated for one reason or another....Mr. Socks might never open the border again !! I could only find the population stats for age 0-14 from 2018, which in Canada was 16.1 %, so lets go with even 10% under 12....The way I see this is that a 75% vaccination rate of our population could be a LONG TIME coming or certainly not until kids under 12 can get it. But then, Mr. Socks was a Drama Teacher,,,not a Math Teacher. Would it not make sense that when you cross the border you show a vaccination card/certificate and you are good to go?? Guess here in Canada that would infringe on our Constitutional Rights ! I feel terrible for our American neighbors who come to Canada to fish, hunt etc. ie. spend money ! Hopefully sooner than later it will open...if Trudeau takes a Math course in the meantime.
This is the second year we've been shut out. We were to be on Ogascanan 6/20, but with no opening last month we have to roll to next year. Was told by Ginny that there isn't much they can do, and the border at Temiscaming is patrolled.
Very sad. We are from Aiken, SC and Augusta, GA, and have been vaccinated for months.
More walleye for everyone else when things open up. I feel very sorry for all those camps we have fished for the past 25 years or so. My favorite week of the year has been taken away two years in a row, and not sure I've got another year left in what is left of this old bod, but the kids will be there next year!!!!
JMW
What-choo-talk’n ‘bout Willis!?! Take care of that bod and make it happen this Fall! A Sept trip perhaps???? My dear old dad and his brother said they were done about 3 yrs ago…this year they have a Sept trip planned to the scene of a trip near Timmins from 1980. They are so excited. Doesn’t even matter if they wet a line. Checked out the “grounds†of the camp and it seems reasonable for both to navigate. American plan with meals and housekeeping. Dad says the thing he’s looking forward to most is hanging out at the dock to see what all the guests bring in, and the stories.
Patio dining open today in Ontario. What an encouraging site it was……

First off we are not the states. What works for you can't work for us for oh so many reasons. I'd go into it but it would get political. People here generally understand this is the way it had to be and did the right thing. Everyone here wants life back to normal. Yesterday phase one started. Everybody was out and about. No one can get in front of this thing and stop it mainly because we paid the price and pandemic wise things look great going forward...better then it does for the states.
Everybody has sacrificed, some with their lives. Many will come out of this not the same. Be patient, it's coming sooner then you think.
Passed over border, going from Quebec to Ontario, this morning about 10:00 am
QPP not there, OPP waved me on, did not stop.
I sure hope the closures end on June 16
Ontario & Quebec just announced the border patrols will stop - so open provincial borders in the next couple of days is a great sign!!
Thx
Greg
Thank Goodness, the wait is over. Beware fish! I'm on your rear fin.

Agreed! Did a little online ordering this past weekend and treated myself to handful of new lures….just in case can get up there this year. Will get used eventually regardless.
Well deserved I believe. After last year nixed and the uncertainty of this year.
Great news, Greg. I'm happy for our Canadian members. PLEASE post trip reports so those of us in the U.S. can keep our dreams of Kipawa alive. I'm still hoping for an opening for August. Good luck everyone! My son and I rescheduled our trip to the TBL Outpost to August 28th. I'm hopeful.

Wayne just posted this, great news
As with anything in life, there has to be a ying to every yang...
Progress, but nothing imminent and 'closure will likely be extended'.

Really good news for Ontario - covid cases dropped to 296 yesterday.
How can they say the same measures are in place at the Mexican Border??? Thousands come across every day and they do NOTHING to stop it. This whole thing with Canada is purely political.
Well...we’ll know something soon. The optimist in me says, “Pack your bags baby...time to get this on!â€. We’ll find out soon enough....

What say all the naysayers now? It was so obvious, vaccines work.
Looks like my July trip with my grand kids just got off'd. :'(

Beyond disappointed for them and me, they bring it up at least once a week.........
Got that bad news text from our cousin in Sarnia this afternoon. Hopes for a trip before August 1, our groups availability, are now gone. Now we dream of next year .
I’m sorry to hear that fellas.
I feel bad for all those that had booked in hopes of something happening by now….and the lodge owners who know there’s a slew of us down here chomping at the bit.
Sadly, with this 7/21 date, within a month or so past that many schools and university’s will be back in session. Affecting late August and beyond options for many….or those in their party.

I wouldn't write off the last week of July yet. Many great signs. Minor outbreak in Waterloo which is near Kitchener. We now lead the world in first jab percentage for actual countries. I think the stat for second jabs is 20% but that is where the action is at now. Mine happens Monday.
Since the vaccine roll out has been so great there is pressure being applied to the federal government from the tourism industry. In particular fishing and hunting lodges from Algoma westwards. I had planned a trip out that way before health issues but a stop to that. In trying to book some spots establishments didn't want anyone who wasn't local!
Finally made it to camp yesterday night.
It’s raining right now, and the bugs are real bad.
Hopefully you all will be able to come across the border in August.
on my way this afternoon. Was up two weeks ago and the deer flies were relentless. Hope to finally get out fishing.
Is it ever going to open? >:( :( :( :( :(

Somehow, it seems JT doesn't have a plan for the re-opening...almost like the prospect of re-opening now caught his team by surprise. The benchmark numbers to do "this" or "that" keep moving. In other words...stalling until they have a reasonably workable plan in place. Probably the same on the US side.
There's a shot for late-July Hodgey...but September more likely a realistic expectation.
O.K.
So let's talk about the Delta Virus going through the Midwestern states as of July 6
Lets not talk about JT preventing the borders from opening.
Lets talk about these Midwestern states and how they might prevent the borders from opening.
OR
How about we just lock these threads and let things fall into place naturally.
What will be , Will be.
We are not in control
Only people down here getting and dying from the Delta (Animal House) variant now are the non-vaccinated. That doesn't mean the Lambda Lambda Lambda (Revenge of the Nerds) variant won't pop-up at any time...and if that happens, I guess we just need to write a screenplay with our free time....
I wrote this prior to John’s comments and when I pressed post I got a warning of a new message, so this has zero to do with his post and 100% prior to.
I’ve hit A brick wall, with all of it. I am sick of being sick of it.I know all the yada yada about lives being lost to Covid, but what about my Canadian fishing life?
I’m just kidding……….honest. 8)
The main stream news here is salivating and waiting to pounce on the next piece of bad news that they can spew all over the place. They have a vested monetary reason to keep the general public scared to death and glued to their dribble, lies and tones of doom.
The pieces of shirt can’t wait to find some new variant to scare everyone to pieces and I’m certain, they are seriously hoping for some new disaster to happen soon or better yet, a new virus to panic all of us with, while we stay tuned to watch the new tide detergent pods commercial.
HA HA HA HA HA!!! So funny and so true!!! HA HA HA HA HA!!!
From the beginning to the [hopeful] end, this whole thing is just stupid beyond words.
If I miss late-July, that's not ideal. If I miss September because of this BS, I'm having Mr. Rhybak meet me in Buffalo on his rig...I'm outta here. Fugitive.
Keep me updated on your defection
The delta variant is giving the UK all sorts of difficulty. Within the states the trend downwards has stopped with 22% growth recently. Alabama has a 33% vaccination rate with 40% with one jab. Sadly they are not alone at the bottom. Vermont has an impressive 75% double vaccination rate. Canada's rate is 38% and will probably top out around Vermont's rate.
So what does a leader do? You open slowly as they are now doing allowing Canadians back who have the double vax without isolation in hotels. Keep an eye on the numbers and slow down if there is a resurgence. If things stay positive open a bit more...all the while vaccination rates head towards plateaus. Here in Ontario things continue to improve. It looks very good.
If I were the Prime Minister and I wanted to do a gradual opening I would use US fishermen as a test balloon. You would make them write out a plan where they don't overnight anywhere but the lodge on the way in or out. You would offer no American plan indoors and have all the other protocol in place. Allow no one from different households in the same cabin and make lodge owners offer up their plan for protocol use. This is what Kesagami lodge is doing now for Canadians. It does leave open the possibility that Americans can get seriously sick in Canada but with double vaxes that would be a very low number. It would also mean delay at the border. Perhaps also require proof of health insurance. The problem being if you open it up for one segment all the other segments in the tourism industry want allowances also.
Here is a problem no one is thinking about, Canadians wanting into the US for vacations. :)
If I were the PM of Canada the last thing I'd be thinking about is fisherman and their pursuit of "the big one".
I don't know...I've stopped worrying about this. When the border opens, I'll go. Until then, golf it is...
Oh you’re not worrying about their experience, what you’d be interested in is a controlled setting with very limited contact with Canadians. What would be better then a remote lodge?
How about we start posting fishing reports and stop speculating.
Hi all,
Love the polite banter, but I see this topic as going on and on unnecessarily and I don't want it to turn into something more serious, which brings me to the point of the post. Lets get back to fishing, discussing fishing, trip reports (I am guilty, I haven't written mine after returning a week ago).
As much as I want to see the border open, for the purpose of my american friends to hopefully enjoy my favourite place on earth, Kipawa lake (and it's fishing), the 5 pages of comments associated to this thread is, what others have pointed out, speculation and it is what it is... until further notice.
I hope everyone sees it the same way, lets close this thread down and get back to fishing topics... me, I will try to write my trip report - but something happened out of my trip... I haven't lake trout trolled in 2 years and I LOVED it more than ever (we caught our 3 largest walleye of the trip on lake trout gear, trolling at 100 feet deep and I caught a big pike also). I loved it so much that I went out and bought 2 new trolling rods and 2 new line counter big reels for the lead core line - plus 4 new gang trolls and a dozen new spoons (all different sizes and all different colours). I can't wait to get back up there and try out the new gear.
Tight lines my fishing friends... and remember, friends don't let friends talk about politics on fishing forums ;D
Greg
Couldn't agree more Greg, I stayed out of it but there sure was a couple of comments I felt like responding to. I'm so sick of covid and the politics that goes with it. Good call
Agreed…………….. No good comes from any of it, we are all powerless and must wait it out till its over.
Tune in to the thread, or not. Reply, or not. A very relevant thread. It appears this forum is supported by mostly American members….who are waiting on pins and needles for the “border openingâ€. Some very helpful links have been posted. Tune in or not……
Here’s hoping the border opening still happens in July. Good vibes only……
My suggestion is to lock this thread.
Enough is enough.
All talk right now is speculation, hearsay and peoples opinions.
All this is doing is Building hopes with our U.S. counterparts and then dropping them like a rock the day our governments decide to extend the border closing.
16 months of constant speculation is enough
I say lock this topic and others like it.
Lets get back to fishing
There are several categories…â€general discussion†is the one this thread is in…approximately. One could stick to “fishing discussion†or “trip reportsâ€.
It’s entertaining and informative to see all the latest on this item. Once border is open, I look forward to reading comments about it…will that be censored too?
censored is a very harsh word
