Title: Kipawa bait & tackle
Post by: Kyle Skelding on May 29, 2021, 07:08:58 AM
For those that have been fortunate enough to get to kipawa and do some fishing, do you know if kipawa bait beside the gov docks is still selling leeches? I don't see any open hours on Google, and thought there were rumors they might close for good.

Trip planned for June 5th to Alwaki, 🤞 starting to actually get my hopes up that our trip will be a go.

Thanks.
Good luck on the water, wherever you are.

Unfortunately it looks like the stay at home order and border closure is being extended until June 16 today. We are supposed to go up next Thursday

They've already relaxed restrictions on outdoor activities. I think they're just waiting until June 14 to start reopening some things. So the "stay at home order" has already been lessened. Border crossing definitely a concern. Might have to get Brian at Alwaki to "hire" us as fishing guides for the week haha.

Haha agreed. We’re going up Alwaki this upcoming Thursday, hopefully we’ll hear some good news soon.

Kipawa bait and tackle is closed as far as I know. Was closed all last season anyway. We get our bait at stop 102.

Was hoping to go next weekend but crossing the border isn’t likely to be permitted it seams.

We've made alternate plans for our trip, need the best, most trusted leech supplier in North Bay. Does anyone know if Trapper Joe's or Billy Bob's is comparable to what Corina used to sell as far as quality? Don't really care about price at this point, just want to get some good bait and catch some fish.

Thanks for you help,

If your fishing in Quebec - I believe all your bait must be purchased in Quebec.

I'm sure the alternate plan is to fish Ontario as the border is still closed

Can you cite a reference for this? I've never heard of any restrictions.

Corinne closed last year due to Covid. I suspect she's watching what the situation is this summer. Her phone number has been disconnected if says anything???

Temagami. Just interested to see if anyone has recently had good experience buying bait from trapper Joe's or Billy Bob's. Size is the priority. Just buying 1- 1.5lbs.

As for the transport of bait across borders (when they open), live bait can't be transported into Quebec. Worms, leeches, and frogs are not considered to be live bait fish.

I phoned Quebec ministry last September and was told worms and leeches (though not available at that time of year) we're allowed to be brought across the border.

We wouldn't be on Lake temgami, twin lakes I think is the spot we have a line on. Our plans are still in motion as some of the group may not make it now.

I should have specified minnows. There are still some areas in QC that allow dead minnows to be used, but it's been a long time now since they were legal up in Kipawa. Up until the mid 80's you could still use live minnows bought off lodges on the lake and had the receipt. After that it was always salted Emerald shiners. That's how I always fished for Lakers with gang trolls. It wouldn't surprise me if they had restrictions on leeches even but I don't know.
However on the Ottawa River if you get caught with minnows in your boat on the QC side of the border you better have a voucher from a bait dealer on the QC side or you be in big trouble, they love checking Ontario boats.
Greg would be more familiar with the QC regs, he fishes the river East of Ottawa plenty

Ya, I don't really fish the Ottawa with any kind of live bait, as I fish usually a 3 to 5 hour slot each weekend morning and be home in time for lunch and the normal yard work, prepare bbq supper, car washing and other chores after that.  I mention the 4 or 5 hours at a time as keeping the bait fresh, taking it home, putting in the fridge and remembering it the next morning when I am half asleep is a pain.

My Ottawa river fishing focuses on shallow bays for pike, bass & musky and there are plenty of lures that work just fine that I really don't see the need for purchasing live bait.  I've already caught 5 different species in 6 different mornings of fishing all on spinner baits and a few on buzz baits.

I am confident what has been said is correct though, buy your bait on Ontario side of the river (keep your receipt), launch from an Ontario launch, with receipt/license/outdoors card and your ID showing where you live and you are fine.  I'd need to do some more research on Quebec regs to tell you more.

25 more days (we hope) for Alwaki!
