Title: And They're Off! (Well...almost)
Post by: T-Bone on June 03, 2015, 12:10:29 PM
Sitting here in the Denver airport waiting for my flight back to Columbus and just can't stop thinking about that first tug of a walleye jabbing at my leech. In about 48 hours we'll be heading through the waters of Lac Kipawa to our cabin for a week in paradise. Just can't wait.

Some last minute packing this evening...catch a few winks...then off with my son Brady and nephew Mattie to Marco's where we'll meet up with Sparky, Nick, and Roy Boy and begin the push North. I'll have that first Blue touching my lips by 6pm tomorrow evening.

YES! The annual trip is finally here!!!!

Have a great trip . We are a day behind you and I am getting wound too. Picking up the balance of groceries tonight after work and getting what can be frozen in the freezer .Seems I always make some on the run adjustments to the menu. Leaving Friday am and looking forward to some of the ritual including Webers burgers, light dinner at the Temrose in Temiscaming , then the two hour or so road trip to Bush country on Saturday morning. Long term weather looks pretty good. T-Bone, I think you said you are heading to a new area of the lake and that is probably exciting. After all these years at Sasseginega there are still many places I want to try. At this point I would usually ask for road condition reports but, not sure if I can do anything about it. Good luck and safe travels to all. Sam

I'm envious yet excited for everyone and can't wait to read the reports!
Our trip doesn't start until July 25th so the days at work have been feeling progressively longer in anticipation :-\

We're talking about making a "preliminary trip" earlier in July.
I think mostly because my wife is tired of hearing me talk about Kipawa so often!

Good luck to everyone who is leaving soon or is already there!

Rhybak - I will be at Alwaki - I have been there for many years (8 now I think?) and enjoy the hospitality that Brian and Tina offer.  Always willing to help out with anything you need to make your vacation better.  Actually, this is where I met T-Bone and the guys - my first year going there, and saw them a few other years - I have pictures of my kids jumping off the cliff in front of the Alwaki main lodge with Marc (or was it Marco?) from T-Bone's gang.. the kids were about three foot high then, now they are 6 feet!

I do have a desire to explore other areas of the lake - I did stay at a cottage up past Mackenzie Island once, and I regularly go through the "shoot" and fish up around Turtle Island (had some good shore lunches on some beaches on Turtle) and have come back around through the north river and past Kipawa lodge and crossed hunters lake back to Alwaki lots of times.  In about a 90 minute period, we caught the two largest lake trout ever caught in my boat off Turtle island.

I like what T-bone and the guys are doing - experimenting in a completely different area of the lake - definately interested in seeing how they did via their trip report.

We are going to be leaving Ottawa on Wednesday (July 15th) and driving up to Matawa, or North Bay or Kipawa (depending on what time we get away) and getting a hotel and going into Alwaki the following morning - my objective is to be into the island, fully unpacked and beer on ice and maybe out lake trout trolling by 11am or noon (weather depending/fingers crossed).

Are you going to be in the area?

Greg
(36 days now... hey, that is my first count-down!)

Well Good luck then.
We will be heading out of 3seasons the morning of the 15th and should be at the Auberge by 9 A.M. having breakfast

We will miss each other by a day - bummer!  Would have been good to meet-up.

re: Auberge - thats the hotel at the corner (4 way stop sign right by the big gas station and the fishing/bait tackle shop and near the Ford dealership) right?  I am thinking of staying there also - have heard so much about it on this forum - any insight?  do you stay there?  whats it like? (quality? price?).

Auberge does breakfast? That's great to know.
I stopped at Guido's in North Bay, great feed and very reasonable.
I may be up around same time, will let you know and share a pint.

Greg

The motel is nothing special.
A place to put your head down for the night.

Last year it was around 100 dollars for two including a drink and breakfast package.
I would look for a place in town to have dinner ,but breakfast there is good.

There are better motels in town (temrose) I think was mentioned.

@RHYBAK

LOL my buddy used to live next to the gentleman who owns Guido's (and yes, his first name is Guido)
We used to go down to his restaurant all the time.....back then the food was great.
Glad to hear it's still the same old place.
Boy just reading these posts brings back too many great memories!
You guys are making it very difficult to not "call in sick" and head north myself.
If you're doing beer at breakfast, have you got room at your table for one more? First rounds on me!
LOLOL
Enjoy the trip!

Brent

Sgt.C - Funny how we Canadians (at least the Ontario version) have this thing called a "Texas Mickey" .Unlike the traditional "Mickey" (short for Mickey Finn) which  contains 40 oz of liquor . A Texas Mickey however has 101 oz's or 3 litre . Not sure how we Canadians originally named it (maybe we didn't ?) I'm sure the "Everything is bigger in Texas" came into play somehow
1 day ,20 hours , 3 minutes ,42 seconds until the Kipawa alarm goes  off

I love it!
A Texas Mikey sounds like just the ticket.   Must have been named by some Canadians, maybe after a visit here?  I've not heard of it before.

We do have a river called Canadian,  it was name for a group of Canadians that came here  (as the story goes)  to escape the law back home.   We do enjoy stories of outlaws, so who knows the real story behind the story.

@ puckster!
Good man, you are a true friend already to offer such assistance!
With hard work and determination, I think we can get it done....

If you don't mind me asking, where's your camp?
We're up at Dead Bear Bay the week of July 25th and hoping to be in grindstone the July 4/5 weekend (still working on that schedule).
Hope to see you around!
Look for our boat, her name is "Knot Sure".......
Cheers:
Brent

Always glad to help out a buddy.
I'm at the extreme east end of the lake at the red pine chutes. Look at the outfitters map my location is named as the  Hodge podge lodge.

@puckster_guy, Yeah I know exactly where you are. A few years ago when lots started opening up for sale there again we spent a few days looking around.
I hope we happen to be in that neck of the woods while you're there, would be great to meet you!

@RHYBAK, Its in the north end of Lac Sunnyside, you'll see it on google maps as "Baie de L'Ours Mort" basically stright up from Le Boiler

Take care:
Brent

Well T-Bone ought to be getting close to home shortly.  Leaving Kipawa is not a enjoyable experience! Hope they all get home safely and had a great time!  (How can't you?)  Looking forward to his trip report. He always has a good one.
