Hey everyone,
Based on a nice Walleye I got at Kipawa last week - I am considering and have started researching what getting a replica made (for my basement man-cave) would cost.
So far, I have notionally found that it is about $15 per inch - my fish was over 26 inches (7+ lbs) - so that is $390 then add a mount ($50 to $100). I am in Ontario/Canada - does this seem reasonable?
Anybody ever gone through this process before? any advice? things to look out for or things to avoid? questions to ask the taxedermist?
Thx, Greg

I had mine done by Advanced Taxidermy
Mine was 32 inches 10.7 pounds
600 dollars
Thats awesome Rhybak - beautiful fish.
I actually saw many recommendations of Advanced Taxidermy online this morning and had already emailed them - I am waiting for a response.
I have a 6 pound large mouth bass I caught in the Ottawa river mounted almost exactly the same as your walleye - same background wooden plate look, etc.
Greg
here's another one of their fish that they did for me...35 pounds

Sorry, I have no good advice but just needed to add......WOW!!!
Looks amazing!
Advance Is amazing!!
Where was that trout caught Rhybak? Summer/ winter?
Winter
In the mouth
Just to be clear; you guys are talking about after having caught these fish, released them after taking pictures and then had a replica made of your catch...correct?
what is your point?
Why does that matter.
That is an irrelevant question.
WOW , where does that come from?
I just wanted to be clear of the type of mount. Some people on this forum might not be aware that you don't have to keep the fish.
Set it free so it can be enjoyed another day by someone else and as a bonus, if it's a female, it will have the chance to lay millions of more eggs.
For those that don't know: you can take a great picture with a digital camera.
1-blow up that picture in a frame and post it in your office or home
2-get a replicated mount of your fish. the technology these days is wonderful. it will look so real.
or
3-keep the fish
if you choose to keep the fish, you need to be aware of how to preserve it until you get to the taxidermy.
I've done all three methods.
Sorry I got defensive.
So many sites get bad reputations when a debate gets started about keeping and releasing fish.
Something that is trying to be avoided here.
I have dealt with advance Taxidermy with a good picture along with measurements.
They reproduce it accordingly.
As you can see, they did a very good job in both cases.
I really like the trout replica! Very Nice!
Quit showing off Rhybak... ;D

I also had Advanced replicate a 32.5 walleye for myself. Turned out great. Not 100% but very great quality and detail. I kept the jig that I caught it on and hung it in its yap. The one thing I felt was different on the rep vs the real one was the length of the outer gill plate. The real fish had a bigger, longer plate. I would do it again on another fish for sure. It's a great feeling knowing I watched that fish swim away.
I didn't expect what I found out - to get a replica made of a 26 inch fish, is $22 an inch, then a half decent attractive looking mount is $50 to $100 - after tax, this would be over $700 Canadian. WOW! Apparently our dollar is so bad right now, that this is driving the price of the replica's up (as the materials come out of the US). A year ago, it was $15 or $16 an inch.
I thought... hmmmm... $700 for a nice fish (not a great fish, but a nice one) or I could go for another long weekend up to Kipawa for $700!!! I don't know if another trip is in my near future, but I think I am going to pass on the replica for now.
Greg
Advances prices could be higher due to their clientel.
They have contracts with Bass Pro and Cabelas to fill their new stores full of replicas.
Who needs business from pea-ons like us.
The owner of advanced told me he's not doing bass pro and cabales Too much work he said. Used to but not anymore. That's what he told me in June
