Looking for some help finding perch in Lake Kipawa. This will be my 1st trip to Lake Kipawa ( July 2, to 9. ) Staying at Alwaki Lodge. Hoping to add some of those delicious perch fillets to our shore lunches. Any info as to where, how, etc., would be appreciated. Thanks, Captain Hali.
WE FISH THE NORTH END AND I HAVE NEVER SEEN A PERCH OVER 4 INCHES
You want Jumbo perch...stop at Lake Simcoe on your way up.
Sounds like the Eyes and Pike don't let them get any bigger before devouring them. How about Whitefish?
yes, they are in the lake along with Ling( Burbot)
I have caught many perch over the years, but I have never caught a perch over 4"...have never seen a ling caught...and have never seen a whitefish caught. Now...if you're looking for fallfish, you'll stab a few of those when you're up there. And if you do...move...you're on the wrong spot. ;D
On Lake Ostaboningue, I have caught one Yellow Perch in two years. As was already said, it was very small. I have caught a few of what I thought was Whitefish, though as T-Bone said. Might have been Fallfish, they did look like Carp.
Jeff
I got a couple of 6 to 8 inch perch at my end of the lake. I was bored one day and with a small piece of worm and my smallest jig I got several perch off a point in about 5 fow. I had that small perch problem (I know there's gotta be help for that somewhere) none to be found over 4 inches....The pike and musky got them first. One of my favorite lures was an 8 inch perch Rapala. The pike and musky loved it.
Thanks for the feedback fellows. From the responses, I'd venture a guess that perch have not been a targeted species by anyone, but rather a by-catch while fishing for Walleyes. Seeing there seems to be an abundance of 3" to 4" fish, and given the fact that female perch reach a sexual maturity between 4&5 years of age, males between 3&4, there have to be a fair number of 8" to 12" perch in the lake. I'll do some searching or targeting of perch during the week I'm up at Alwaki Lodge.
I live in Glen Robertson Ontario, some 20 minutes from Lake Saint Francis, which is well known for it's jumbo perch, ( lancaster perch ), and will apply some of the knowledge I've acquired over the past 30 something years of fishing them there. I'll share my findings with a post some time late July.
The problem you will find is they are not the same species of perch as Lake Simcoe etc. Good luck finding them any bigger then 4 inches. lol
Another thing on the perch. How many would you be allowed to keep on Lac Kipawa? And any size limit for them? If you could find some worth keeping that is.
What's a fall fish?
lie an over grown chub.

What's a fall fish?
Nasty buggers. They bite aggressively, but when it's about 10' from the boat you know it's a chub. Pick up anchor, crank that motor, and beat-feet outta there. I dislike them so much I won't even touch them.
Ick.
I got a massive pike to the boat when I hooked a chub while jigging. It mangled the chub but I couldn't hook the pike. I gave him the chub after I took it off the hook.
I know Quebec is very specific about the use of minnows and the such so I was wondering if it is legal to use these small perch or fall fish for live bait? Seems like it would be a nice way to spend a couple hours drifting for some pike.
It's illegal to use any game fish, whole or in part, for bait.
Jay
Kipawa4, the daily and possession limit for perch on Kipawa is 35. There is no size restriction.
Kent, it is prohibited to use perch for bait anywhere in Quebec.
Captain Hali, Thanks I could not find that anywhere.
@RHYBAK @T-Bone oh so that's a fall fish...we always called them chubs. Yea they are pretty much worthless! We used to catch them a lot in Watson but no very often anymore.
Perch as bait?
I want perch for supper.
You cant use any minnows as live bait. For 2017 I have been told you can't use any minnows dead or alive. That should change things up for some.
OK, educate me:
What type of fish is some people using as bait that they're calling herring?
I would imagine they are also not allowed in Quebec.
The only herring I know of is a salt water food fish (unless it's a red herring ;D)
Here you go Sargent.
Your daily education
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herring
Fresh water herring come in many shapes and sizes.
In ontario we fish for the Blueback or cisco.
Very tasty from the smoker.
Also a very good Pike and Lake Trout bait.
The travel in very large schools .
While trolling in deep waters on Kipawa, you may notice large clouds on your fishfinders suspended in the water column.
Those are clouds or schools of Herring.
Thanks Rhyback.
I hadn't known of a freshwater one before. We don't have em down here in our warm water.
Fall fish......is that the one the locals call a cisco?
kind of a cross between a carp and a sucker.
can't find it anywhere on line.
I can't answer your question walleye maven.
Just chuckling to myself thinking maybe this thread name needs changed to some kind of fish identification education.
I've found don't be afraid to ask anything fishing related here, someone will give you the answer (Rhy, Jay, CC ?).
Walleye Maven, a cisco is a fresh water herring. Lake trout feed heavily on them, and usually travel in large schools that can number into the thousands. If you have ever seen lakers feeding on the surface shortly after ice-out, it was ciscos they were after. When you mark a baitball on your sonar it is likely ciscos or smelt that you are marking. In summer they will be down near the thermocline along with the Lakers and Whitefish.
Here we go
From Jumbo Perch, to Fall Fish to Cisco( herring) and now to smelts.
NO SMELT BAIT BALLS IN KIPAWA.
Just in case somebody asks
