Title: FJC KM Log
Post by: Fort Wisers on August 09, 2016, 06:43:39 AM
Took a quick return trip from home, to Mattawa and back to drop off some supplies up at the homestead in preperation for our vacation.
During the travels the yellow truck (our 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser) hit a nice milestone:

Been a dependable rig, we're quite proud of her!

I have to tag @Dog on this one.......
This ODO reading is actually a little outdated now as we rolled this number a bit ago, but better late than never.

Impressive! Almost struck a deal on a Land Cruiser Prado over the weekend. Wife wouldn't budge so we walked away from the deal over $1,000... I almost cried. It was a great vehicle.

I'm driving an 08 Cherokee Diesel right now, about 135k on the clock. I'm lovin' it. Great gas mileage and a much smoother ride then the old one I had. I've had about 3 diesels now and will take them over a gas engine anytime.

Dealer called and folded so we picked it up this past weekend. New (to us) overland weekend warrior and fishing vehicle base platform

Hey how cool, congrats Nate. That's gotta be fun to drive up here. it'll Love the back roads around Dumoine. Dying to try them myself lol. We need an off roaders group here similar to the ATV's finding back roads and fishing back lakes. That's gotta be fun.

Hi Brent,

Do most 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser's have this kind of service longevity? Or do you have a maintenance plan that works outstandingly?

Jay

Hey Jay,

Not sure how many are out there with this many miles but there are a number on other fourms with >300,000 miles, so i think all in all the reliability is pretty consistent. Our truck is worked pretty hard and not exactly babied, but we are pretty particular about maintenance.

Take care:
Brent

New to the thread. I live in Arizona (high school teacher) and own a cottage in Quebec but down near Deep River, Ontario.  Google map it.   :)

Always loved Kipawa and always will.  Family had a cottage at the end of the first big lake that my Dad (who passed away three years ago yesterday.....sigh) sold for a song many moons ago to rescue one of my siblings from addiction/collapse (big mistake as she is now 64 and nothing has changed).   Our property is likely worth 20 times what Dad sold it for.   I was 14 and it broke my heart.   We were living in Niagara area (New York) at the time.   Still love WNY as well.

Anyway....time brings change and here I am married with a graduating senior 2nd in her class going to NAU next Fall.  Have owned the camp in Zec Des Joachims for over 20 years now and love it there.

Anyway (2).....this is about winter doldrums.....I live in Casa Grande about an hour south of Phoenix and it's beautiful in the winter time....(forget summer!!).  I have one more year to teach and then change will come.   Who knows....maybe someone wants to check out our winter area and pay a visit.....Who knows....maybe someone will want to "rent" our house (very modest charge) in the future, play some gulf, run up to Sedona, etc while my wife and I are off on a trip.   God-willing....the future could hold some of this and maybe I can be helpful in relieving some of you fellow Kipawa Lovers of the winter blues.

A friend.   Paul

Well, we finally bit the bullet and traded in the old truck.
It was still running decent but a number of smaller items we're starting to add up.
With the amount of driving we do, we decided it was time.......

The ODO when I dropped her off at the dealer:

We had it since new, 670,000km and not once did it fail to get us home.
R.I.P. old yellow, you served our family well.

That is crazy good ! RIP old yellow, I should find her and see if i could trade my wifes 2018 Subaru Outback 30k miles that just got out of the shop.

Still under warranty, thank god! Deep snow one morning and my wife calls to tell me the car won't move out of the driveway? I'm at work already plowing, so we called a tow truck to take it to the dealer. Two weeks later they figure it out to be a wheel sensor causing the engagement of the traction control nonsense.  And that leaves a car immobile ????? This car is a piece of _____ with technology issues. I wish I could have old yeller or another less advanced auto. I truly believe we have reached a point where technology is literately killing us "Boeing".

My favorite part of the "supposed" advanced protection system in this Outback is, it stops working every time when you need it most "heavy rain or even light snow". The other beauty is my driveway is a long uphill climb. If we don't disengage the traction control the car starts pulsing the brakes and cutting the engine RPM's, which then causes the car to loose the momentum needed to scale the driveway and then you start sliding backwards down the hill with tree on both sides  :-[. Gezzz

All this all-wheel drive crap doesn't have a patch on a true four wheel drive vehicle and unfortunately I think Jeep is one of the few left to offer it in a SUV. I lock the 4x4 in on my Chevy PU and it rolls right up the driveway without an issue. My daughters newer Toyota Highlander with All Wheel did the exact same thing our Outback does, causing $5,000 in damages as it bounced back down my driveway.

Agree @Hodgey1!
We have an old beat-up '76 land cruiser that we just use for work around the house (mostly just hauling firewood).
It's bare simple and can be fixed with a pipe wrench and a hammer if you were really pressed, long gone are those days.

The old yellow ('07) was true 4x4, including a locking rear diff.
It did have traction control, as you're describing, but this could be turned off so that it ran like a bare bones 4x4 truck.

We'll see how the new truck fairs out reliability wise compared to the old one.

What did you end up getting to replace the FJ FW???    "the new truck"?

2019 Toyota Tacoma......happy to have a bed out back, especially for camp work.
Between kids, dogs and loads of lumber, the interior of the old yellow truck took a beating.

When are they gonna start selling diesels here. When my jeep dies I'm gonna get another only because of the diesel. I'm saving a ton of money on gas and the torque just pulls my boat around like it's not even there. Pulling the old tub out of my launch is effort less for a 3.0l engine. I've had 4 diesels and can never go back to a gas engine.

Toyota will never make a diesel available in North America, not gonna happen... they're focused on TC and SC smaller engines combined with hybrid powertrains in their truck and SUV segments.

Your best bet for diesel import vehicle is to wait for a Nissan midsize pickup diesel, they've been promising a diesel frontier for years and the new model is due in 2021 or 2022.

The Jeep wrangler and gladiator come with a diesel if you can stomach a FCA product.

Otherwise here's hoping Ford shoves a small diesel in the new Bronco pending for release sometime this month.

@puckster_guy   FYI... I bought a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel a year ago and I find it great!  It is the Fiat engine where the previous diesel version of the jeep GC in 2007 (ish) was a Mercedes CRD (common rail diesel) engine.  It has the same engine as the RAM diesel pickup (which a few of my friends have).

It tows my boat great (400+ foot pounds of torque) and still gets good mileage consumption (what I used to spend in my Tahoe to just drive around town without the boat is now what I get when the Jeep tows the boat - about 12.5 or 13 liters per hundred km).  On the highway to Toronto not towing, doing about 118 using the adaptive cruise control, I will get down to about 7.6 liters per hundred km.  I got a pretty loaded model, with air-bag self leveling suspension, cooled seats, black-out chrome package, 20 inch black rims, and it has an incredible Harmon Kardon stereo (19 speaker and 450watt).

I bought it with an extended warranty for 3 years which I am happy I did because it did have some problems twice in the last year, both having to do with the diesel DEF fluid and DEF fluid sensors.  The cost of the two repairs far exceeded the cost of the warranty - so I made that money back in the first year.

I would consider it as an option again - I think it is the perfect mix of comfort, functionality, gas consumption, etc.

@Greg

I have never owned a diesel but is the diesel DEF system not covered by the environmental warranty?

Mine is 2008 Grand Cherokee with the Mercedes engine. I don't have that DEF fluid set up so no issues there. With only a 5 speed tranny also fully loaded with the "trail ready" badge as well. I can get 10.2 on the hwy with around 12 on city streets. About 12 as well when towing. I've had it for 2 yrs and bought it with 120k km. Now sitting around 160k km. I replaced the glow plugs, alternator and serpentine belt last winter. otherwise perfect running little truck. I love the way it just powers up steep hills without downshifting. I'd Love your 8 spd tranny and lower my mileage even more. However I'm happy with what I have.

@Dog - not sure what environmental warranty is - maybe something different in USA versus Canada?

I was told by the shop foreman at the Dodge/Jeep dealership "wow - good thing you bought the extended warranty!" when the first issue happened - they showed me the price of the part - it was $5k!!!  It was the entire def fluid reservoir with all the sensors and pump inside the tank.  The warranty only cost me $3200.

Then a couple of months ago, the engine light came on and that required an exhaust sensor to be replaced.

Those were the only 2 items so far... knock on wood.

The environmental warranty in the USA is backed by the EPA clean air act... items like catalytic converters and anything emissions related including ECM are covered for a much longer term than the factory warranty, I'd have to imagine the DEF system would be covered since it directly impacts emissions but haven't checked...since the federal government requires the manufacturers to meet emissions.

@Dog   I don't think there is an equivalent in Canada - but I could be wrong... Something for me to check into for longevity (if I keep the truck more than the 3 years).
