I have been tossing around the idea of hiking to our camp soon if the weather conditions are favorable for a weekend in the snow up there. Does anyone know how deep the snowpack in the bush is in or around the Kipawa area?
@Riverrat ,
@crunchie . From what I have gathered the ice thickness on the lake is much less than a normal year, but there has been plenty of snowfall, any info would be helpful. Thank you!
Brad
I participated in the yearly fishing derby just this past Saturday, the 11th. While I didn't measure the thickness, a friend next to me told me there was 20-24 inches, that was just in front of Kipawa, just south west of the small island with a cottage on it. Not saying this was all black ice but it was measured with a fishing spoon. There were numerous trucks and cars on the lake as well. I'll try and post a pic to localize the area.

I can get you an answer on the Laniel end later today. Chalet Diane will know. I am expecting a call from him tonight or tomorrow
Thank you crunchie, and riverrat. I appreciate any info you can share with me. I hope you all are Making it through this last part of winter well. Thanks again.
Brad I just talked to Ralph and he said Dave is at his cottage right now. I assume you have a way to contact him
@Riverrat, I have been in touch with him and knew he was thinking about going up, I will have to get in touch and see how things are up there. Thanks
Brad
I wonder what Maniwaki and Red Pine rd are like? I wanna start going up next winter. Not quite ready yet.
Sounds like there is 3 feet of snow still in the bush and 2 1/2 feet of ice on the lake.
Brad
Here's a link to some pics of the fishing derby last saturday in Kipawa, it was a cold one, you may be able to recognize some, most are bundled up.......

Looks like a good time BUT..... no fish pictures??????
Just curious... was the ice-fishing ban only one year?
Greg, no the ice fishing ban is still in effect. Any lake in Quebec that contains Lake Trout are completely closed for Ice fishing. My understanding is the two Ice derbies on Kipawa (the community one and the one out Redpine area) have been given exceptions from the ministry. Nice too see as these derbies are somewhat long running events the community looks forward too.
I have been told that ice fishing will be open on Kipawa for 2018. Some of the outfitters are now saying its closed so who knows now. Rules in this area keep changing lol

There were no "legal" fish caught, there was 2 lake trout caught but not eligible for obvious reasons. They sold 327 "holes" at $20 each. They had 10 draws worth $654 each, total payout. In addition they had numerous participation draws. This yearly tourney is more a gathering than the fishing action, people that have no sleds can just walk out and participate.

Was talking with a friend yesterday, he told me someone sunk their sled around Bronson Island area yesterday, there's a few pressure cracks around the Island, be careful out there.

Is this the one at red pine? I know they do one there the first Saturday in March?. If I can get my place done I wanna go next year.
Thanks for the heads up crunchie. I was also told that there could be some thin spots because of the way the currents flow. We will be careful. We are heading up, so I will post some pics if I get any good ones.

No this is not the Red Pine derby, I'm talking about the Kipawa derby, takes place just in front of the village of Kipawa.
Winter pics of kipawa shortly, we had a great time mostly because of the great neighbors we have on the lake . New experience for me in the winter season, but it sure is a beautiful place. Got iced in on Monday and had to stay an extra day... a little concerning and awesome at the same time. Give me a bit here and I will give a little trip report
I put a quick report in the trip report section...
