Title: Electric motor or outboard for trolling??
Post by: JigginFool on May 29, 2014, 09:44:09 PM
I currently have a 6 hp 2 stroke for trolling and have been kicking around the idea of getting an electric trolling motor to be more stealth like.  What are others experience?  Is it worth investing in an electric trolling motor or do you do just as well without one?

I"ve never owned an electric trolling motor. My main motor stays around 2 mph and gets me lots of fish. I use a drift sock to slow me down more if neccessary.

I tend to agree with puckster guy, between back trolling and dragging a 5 gallon bucket if I have to,we get her slowed down just right !

I like using an electric motor because there is no noise and no exhaust fumes !

The year I took up my electric trolling motor I liked having it. Not only because of the noise but the ease to back away from shore when drifting without constantly starting up the gas motor. My biggest issue where I go is I have no way to charge my batteries up and would rather have my depth finder, so I have been leaving my electric motor at home. With the ability to charge my batteries I would take my electric motor for sure.

Used an electric trolling motor for two years and realized what a pain. Very difficult in the wind and of course the recharging problem. Your six horse will be fine..

Thanks for the input!  Guess I'll spend the money on other fishing equipment and supplies!

Even though it takes up extra space in the boat and the car, I wouldn't go to camp without it. It has a lot to do with which fishing techniques you use.  It helps in setting your boat position before anchoring, keeping the boat slowly moving when fishing floating jigs and just in case you have a motor problem it may get you back to camp. Taggart Bay Lodge started renting them out this year.
