Title: 'Walleye' Spinning Reel
Post by: T-Bone on May 17, 2017, 01:26:40 PM
OK...I got $100 US in Amazon gift cards in the mail yesterday...thinking about getting a new spinning reel to haul in those pesky 'eyes.

I know we've explored this before in concert with the best choice for walleye jigging rod, but new members...new reel designs...etc. warrant a revisit.

So...what do you prefer? My preferred brand is Shimano...but I can be swayed. My hard budget is $100 US. All suggestions are appreciated.

Ready....GO!!!

I bought 2 Pfleuger Presidents to go on our med-light spinning rods. I've always used Shimano spinning reels.

I've only had these since last October, so I don't know how long they'll last but right now.. I like them more than my shimano reels worth twice as much!

Hi T Bone..I have used Shimano Spirex reels for 20+ years..have 5 of them ....never let me down..have caught 30 pound salmon with a Spirex....Have 2500 and 5000 models..They have a double paddle handle ..one drawback is the anti reverse on the reels have a little bit of delay....not direct drive..has never bothered me for hook setting when jigging..,,,

I also bought two pfueger presidential after the first was so good and cheap. My GF got one too.

The last shimano I bought for $130 was such a POS I wouldn't buy one again. The bail is so weak its like its made of aluminum wire. It bends from looking at it wrong, and you can bend it back, but its going to break easy...

I also vote for the Spirex by Shimano it comes in either rear or front drag varities and several sizes as noted previously. Available at Cabelas for $59.99 and Walmart.com for $55.99. Amazon certainly should carry them. These reels are smooth and seem put together well. I picked a couple up when my 28 year old Shimano spinning reel finally broke down. They do come with the quick fire trigger which some like and others dont.

If you use Cabela's from this site I think it helps Nancy with the costs.

You are all missing the point.
T-Bone has Amazon gift cards to use up.
Not Cabela's and not E-Bay and not Wallmart

Thanks Mr. Rhybak. I like it. As you know, only the most-confident men wear pink...I'm sure the same applies for fishing reels and the angler holding it. It will look awesome with my new shiney black Eyecon rod...  :P

You can always buy a nice pink cancer awareness rod to go with it.

Support the cause.

28 and counting

Get a pink awareness decal for your boat, and hold the pink reel proudly.
Real men can have pink.
(Or claim you're using your wife's reel because your's broke 😆)

I'm another vote for the Pfleuger President

Not to go sideways with the discussion/thread, but has anyone used the Pfleuger President rod reel combo and have any feed back?

Wife had a Pfleuger Trion rod and reel combo. Used it for several years. Never had a problem with it.  Until I broke the rod end off between the 2nd and 3rd eyelets.   Wasn't a good day after that! I felt terrible because she really liked that rod. She is still using the reel though.  They were having touble with the Monarch Pfleuger rod tips. The Trion Pfleuger rods were good I was the cause of that rod breaking.  I would buy the Pfleuger President Combo.

My last four reels I've bought are Lew's. Nothing compares for quality and price. You get a ton for your buck. My baitcaster reels outcast any other brand I have used. I'm happy with the Lew's spinning reels.

If you are looking for a real deal on a great reel discussed in this thread Cabelas is having a sale on the Pfleuger President at $39.95.  See attached: http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=1254609&type=product&MDK=dynbanP_SL&MDC=cat104760180

Naturally I bought this reel earlier in the year before the sale and used it on my jigging rod. The spool seemed larger than my other reels so thought maybe it would reduce the line twist that seems to come with the walleye frenzy.. It performed very well. operation is smooth and would not hesitate to buy another.Sale price seems really good.

Hey T-bone I have a friend that is sponsored by Lews through bass fishing.  I asked him what he thought and he loves the reels he got through them.  Most of them are bait casters but the spinning reels perform great and are priced extremely well.
