Two of us Going up tomorrow and hoping to get some lake trout in eating size. Hoping to camp on a small island near corbeau. Any tips on where is a good place to look for lakes this early in the year? Been to kipawa three times, but never been this early in season. I would just troll the shorelines with a body bait.
Out in the middle of nowhere doesn't hurt either.
Lake trout are prowling everywhere right now in the shallows and in the depths.
Cold water does that to them.

I don't fish for lakers now, but have been guided by other guests when we used to stay at Corbeau. Run the channel between Denis Narrows (northern area of Corbeau island) down toward old Corbeau Lodge.
OttawaPhil, I would look for bait balls in shallow water, 5 to 20 feet, near steep drop-offs into 40+ feet. Troll minnow imitations or spoons such as Williams wabblers in silver on bright days, gold on cloudy or overcast days. Vary your speed from very slow, 1 mph to 3 mph. I like to troll in a zig zag pattern to further vary the speed of the lure as Lakers will often follow a lure for long distances. This sudden change in speed will often trigger them into taking. Tight lines.
On calm water days one can often see Ciscos ( lake herring ) dimpling the surface as they feed on black flies on the water, and the Lakers will smash through them. Lots of Gulls and Terns concentrated over a small area is a dead giveaway as to the location of baitfish on or near the surface. Good luck, and tight lines.
