Title: How do you hook your leech?
Post by: T-Bone on May 30, 2017, 12:48:54 PM
Just read an interesting article, and was wondering how those that consistently use jigs / hooks and leeches do this.

I always hook it through the large sucker end and I'm jigging...no matter the weight of the jig or how deep. Same way for slip bobber technique. The article said most jig fisherman hook the leech "in the middle" of it's body. For crawler harnesses, it suggested through the small sucker end...stays on tighter. For slip bobbers, through the large sucker end (so it can look like it's swimming away).

How do you do it?

I hook it like you do.
Same end all the time for everything.
This way it might last a few fish.
Hook it sideways= one leech, one bite.

To add , I keep both eyes open when hooking, then I spit on the leech three times for luck.

Through it's sucker...but I sometimes add a cheater treble hook (very small) if the fish bite very softly.

I think I need to try leeches again.  Only tried them a couple of times without bites; maybe I need to try more.
So many of y'all seem to swear by them, I must be doing something wrong.

Definitely worth a try. Walleye eat them like candy and they stay on hook better than night crawlers. Plus you gets lots of wriggling action on your jig.

I hook them once through the "head", and then bury the hook in the middle.
still plenty of squirm, but less misses I feel.
Another thing I do when still fishing with leeches, is gently under cast out a little ways, to prevent helicoptering on the way down.
Dad loved the Lindy floating rig, but too many swallowed hooks imo.

@RHYBAK , I used live leeches.  But only a couple of times.
One of our group got a dozen once. Not really enough to see how they work...

Seeing how so many of y'all use leeches, I need to try again and learn how to use them.

Leeches are NOT a bait choice where I live, so I have pretty much ignored them.

I hook leeches about the same way Walleye Maven does. Through the head and through the body. Works for me ok! They don't come off as easy. Catch several fish with one leech.

Same way as you t-bone. I will leave bail open and jerk some line off upon cast so it sinks straight down. Will get hits as dropping. I have also found leeches work just as well as a piece of crawler.
