Title: Rock guard for boat trailer
Post by: Greg on March 14, 2018, 12:10:02 PM
As spring is just around the corner - I want to start thinking about what easy and affordable upgrades I can make to my boat.

As the hull is fiberglass, I had a few rocks make some very small marks in the hull last year.  Does anybody use or recommend a rock guard screen attached to their trailer?  Any advice or recommendations or experience?

Thanks
  Greg

I have the same issue with my utility trailer. I'm thinking a simple solution might be mud flaps behind the rear wheels of you truck. I'll prob go that route.

Hey Puckster,

I do have some mudflaps - I tow my boat with a Tahoe, so they are the moulded plastic ones... stones can still bounce around from the front tires back towards the boat and get caught in the air flow around behind the rear of the truck, so I think, but am not sure, the rock guard "skirt" might be better.

Check out www.rockguard.com - unfortunately no dealer near Ottawa but I still think I will contact them.

My advice is to stay away from the big stone guard wind sails that attach to trailer. Friends have used and removed as they were crap and fuel mileage skyrockets.
I like the idea of one big heavy mud flap or as link stated a boat top material fitted to boat and trailer, that’s a good solution.
That’s why I like aluminum... less worry.

Use the splash guard skirt for motor homes. It allows the wind to flow thru it, it's adjustable in length and removable. I had one on my one ton when towing my boat or trailer.

hmmmm interesting Limacharley,

You say it is removable - is it something that clicks on and clicks off like in 10 seconds? or are we talking about getting down on the ground with a drill and taking it off?  I may reach out to the company to check this out...

thanks for feedback!

you install a sleeve that fastens to your bumper.
the skirt slides into the sleeve, takes one minute.

Good idea LC. I'm sure it's removable when I'm not hauling ass down Maniwaki.

I've seen those on motor homes.  They look very effective.

Update..., as suggested by LimaCharley - I visited an RV dealership at lunch today and the parts counter guys helped me find a suitable product which I then ordered  ... a full rock guard which connects to my trailer hitch (so nothing on the vehicle needs to be installed, etc.).

I should have it by end of week or next Monday - now I am actually thinking of taking (in 10 days!!) highway 533 from Mattawa to highway 63 if I have the rock guard ... we will see...
