Title: The official what I did today that was fishing related thread...
Post by: Dog on October 08, 2014, 10:31:09 AM
threads like this have been popular on other forums I belong to because it allows members to make a single post rather than create an entirely new thread to share what they did today.... With the offseason upon us, I figure this thread will stay near the top for a few months...

I'll start....

I put my complete jig making kit in the classifieds section. It's free, first come, first serve!
&
Read a great article in "In-Fisherman" magazine about deep cabbage pike
&
Trying to figure out if I can get a line wet again in the canoe for some bass before the weather turns to winter

Cool

I e-mailed my buddy to remind him to bring a fishing rod to the cottage this weekend

Then called my nephew to ask if he's been catching any shallow whitefish yet.

I'm going to camp with my wife for the weekend. Work and fishing to do. She already has her rod there. If the colors are still there I'll post pics.

Had Kipawa Walleye for dinner last night.  I could close my eyes and envision the shore dinners we had last year.

Starting to get ready to batton down the hatches for winter.  :(  Brought the rods and tackle boxes in out of the boat. When we bought the new boat, the cover that came with it did not have a hood for the motor. So we made arrangements with the guy who made the cover to make an attach a hood for the motor. Supposed to take it up next week. Still have faith to spend a day or two bank fishing at French Creek here in Pa before they open the gates on the dams upstream.

-like @johnny walleye and @Nancy @john c I also made preps on LC this past week for winterization of the motor... pulled it from the transom and this coming week I'll service the engine and gear case fluids...

-@JigginFool isn't that great?! I had some lake Erie walleye two weeks ago and can still imagine reeling in those monsters.

-Started a private blog for our 6Pack to communicate on about the annual fishing trip (instead of creating a newlsetter each month to email out, now I can just create a blog post on the site which is nice...)

-Flag and I discussing options to change up the 2015 trip even more with a new overnight hotel stop the night prior on the way up. looks promising and will be nice change of pace to split up the drive a bit more and not have to get such early starts both days, it is vacation after all! Core4 will have to take a vote on it once we have more definite plans in place....

- started the first offseason modification to the doggy paddle, stay tuned in the boat section for that update in a few weeks...

- stopped at the new Field & Stream store in Altoona, PA yesterday on the way home. Real nice store, just like all the others.. Cabelas, Gander mountain etc.. maybe a tad smaller but just as much selection stuffed in it. Saw a couple jumpers that I had to throw back, maybe next month :-)

Couldn't shoot the Moose that I saw because I only had a Calf Tag.
I saw one bull and two cows.
Also saw a bear.
I did shoot a few grouse.

Thanks for asking

@RHYBAK, Was it a big bull that you saw?

We took the boat up to some Amish folks today to make the hood for over the motor. They are also the ones who make the cover originally, and do real quality work.

The Bull was about 2 or 3 years old.
No paddles on the rack, just points.
The cows were huge. well over 1000 pounds each.

I posted last week that I dropped the boat off for the winter... got the phone call from the Marina... "hi greg, regarding your boat... did you know one of the axel's is severly bent and this destroyed the left tire?  you need a new tire and axel before you head out on the road in the spring".

When I got the boat out this year, it was a new battery and a new custom canvas tarp.  Next April, it will be another large chunk of $$$.

Remember, BOAT is just an acronym.... it really means ...

sheesh... just venting :)

@Greg
sorry to hear this... Hopefully you get out on the water enough to offset the these unexpected expenses.
How the heck does an trailer axle bend? That'd be my first question... especially if you keep it stored in their (secured) lot.
I mean, axles just don't 'severely bend' without some sort of impact, ya know?...
Title: Re: The official what I did today that was fishing related thread...
Post by: Greg on November 10, 2014, 11:31:29 AM
Ya, how does an axel get bent... well it probably got bent on the road between Matawa headed up to Kipawa - actually it was on the return trip.  I have been taking that road for 8 years since I bought the boat in '06.  Other than that, the boat is only used around Ottawa and east of Ottawa to get on the river - all nice smooth pavement and a cement boat launch.

The road after Matawa is what I would call an old logging road, it is a twisty, hilly and bumpy road with lots of pot holes (however, there has been a lot of repairs done and I found it better this year).  I never did post a trip report, but on the way home this year on Wed, August 27th, I had a little incident which almost gave me an accident in my pants, I was following a small hyndai about 200 yards back, the hyndai was slowly expanding the gap and creeping away from me.  I was feeling pretty confident on a nice sunny day and had such a good 5 days fishing, I was just trucking along, and then I lost sight of the hyundai around a corner, and 3 seconds later, I came around the corner and had to nail the brakes hard, two deer were running down the side/middle of the road.  I doubt the Hyndai had even seen them as they seemed to have just came out of the bush.  One of the deer flew into the bush and the other went right in front of me.  I was in an all-wheel ABS lock by this point and looked in my driver's door side mirror and saw the SIDE of my boat - the trailer was jack-knifing.  Uh-oh...  lucky no one was coming the other way at that exact moment.   I then let off the brakes a little trying to swerve to avoid Bambi and bring the boat back in line with the truck, it worked but the trailer did snap off the road in the other direction a little (lots of dirt and dust) and I heard a very loud BANG - I believe the passenger side tire/rim hit a pothole sideways on the shoulder and then the trailer came into alignment, and by this time I had slowed down to 10km/hr and Bambi was long gone.  I stopped a little later, checked the tires and tie downs on the boat and could not see anything wrong so I continued on home to Ottawa.  That loud 'BANG' stayed with me a while, and now that the shop has reported issues on that side of the boat, I am putting 1 and 1 together.

Who knows... but honestly, I have never had a problem with the trailer and the tires were original so it might be time to replace them anyway, and after about 10 trips to Kipawa and back, and other local fishing, plus a few other trips, to have a repair somewhere along the way is ok, at least it is a pro-active preventative repair while the boat is in for storage and not on a day when I was on the way to go fishing.

@Greg

2 things come to mind reading your explanation...

1) I need to read about the rest of your trip if it was exciting as your time on the road! haha.. post a report and some pictures if you find time this winter.
2) You're a better man than I. My first instinct would have been to steamroll bambi. Law of gross tonage always wins...
Also, most times a car deductible repair bill would likely be equal to or cheaper than off-season trailer repairs and I'd get some venison jerky out of the deal. haha. You have a good attitude about it though so good on you. I hope you have no more surprise calls from the marina during the repairs.
-Nate

Ha, here are a couple of thoughts...

#1 - the rest of the trip was pretty relaxing, which was exactly as I wanted it.  Got there on Saturday and a heat wave hit, very hot until Tuesday.  This didn't help me catch as many walleye as I had hoped, I could see them on my fish finder down at 50 or 60 feet but just couldn't hook them up.  It cooled down by Tuesday and got a few on Tuesday so that was ok.  However, I did catch a high number of lake trout, some good results there - not as big as I had hoped but still ok.

#2 - to hit the deer or not hit the deer... well, I was alone on a pretty remote road so I didn't really want to get into an accident and more importantly, it was my wife's truck... n'uff said.  :)

Took a ride out to my family cottage on Lake Erie and pulled up my 14' aluminum from its summer spot on the breakwall ,storing it in a safe spot up on top of the 60' bank beside our cottage. 7 years ago my childhood 12' boat was chained by the nose piece to a wrought iron railing standing upright 50' back from  the waters edge and atop a 5' breakwall . A huge winter storm on Dec 30 sent waves up far enough to "eat" my boat .All that remained was the the nose piece still locked to the wrought iron railing .Would never have imagined water getting that high but ........ it did . It also washed away an area of soil on top of our 8' breakwall  10' deep ,10' high and 150' long (again on top of an 8' breakwall) .Quite the winter storm ,the likes of which I have never witnessed in 51 years on Erie

How cool, Jigginfool.....I'm heading up to Lake Temagami a very similar lake to kip in size and shape. In two weeks. If I can remember trip I'll do a report. We'll be fishing for lakers/white fish and a nearby walleye shoal. Getting in a fishing fix lol, so tired of winter as all are.

welp, that didn't go as planned. Was ready to get a line wet but the pond was still frozen slush with snow on top... oh well, a few more weeks and I'll try to slay some smallmouth. A for attempting.

Went ice fishing last Thursday to Lake Simcoe for Perch
Drove to the cottage on Friday for 3 days of Lake Trout Ice fishing.
Planning to go back to Lake Simcoe for more perch this coming weekend.

The ice is still over 2 feet thick up here.
It's not going anywhere to soon.

Took a vacation day last Friday and went ice fishing.  Got another limit of 50 perch and cooked a bunch of them on the ice for lunch, can't get much fresher than that! I think this was my last day of ice fishing this year, time to start prepping the boat and getting ready for soft water.

Were you fishing locally in N.Y. or driving up to Lake Simcoe ?

@RHYBAK - We mostly fish Chautauqua Lake in the winter.  The past couple years the perch were running smaller, but this year we got into limits of 8 1/2" and larger with some measuring 10"-11".  They aren't the Lake Erie 14"+ but its a safer and shorter walk and my cousin did get one he measured at 12.5 inches.  We didn't get any walleye since we didn't target them but there have been a lot of reports of people get short ones, so maybe in a couple years that will pick back up.  In the past we did well on them but then it died off.  A guy even posted a 45" musky that he pulled through the ice about a week ago, the thing was huge.
We also hit Chautauqua during the summer since I can leave my house and be on the water in about 1 1/2 hours so it makes for a nice day on the water and we usually come home with a meal of fish.

I talked to a boat dealership salesman about finally getting myself a boat.  It will have to be ordered from tha factory and it will take 8 weeks.
Huh?,  That's late May, it's fishing time on water here (we don't have any hard water to cut holes in)  :'(.
But it will be in time for my (hopefully) upcoming retirement!

It's a Lowe,  16 foot aluminum bass boat.   Not overly fancy, it's considered an "entry level" bass boat (salesmans term).  I don't want a larger boat and I expect to spend most of my fishing time alone, who needs larger?

No, I'm not planning on hauling it north to Canada.  I figure any 'savings' at a lodge would be more than offset in added fuel cost to tow it that far.

So a couple of Fridays ago I stopped at the Cabela's store outside of Columbus, OH on the way to Hocking Hills with my wife.  I have been looking to replace my tackle box because it is one of the ones that the top opens and the trays have to be splayed out to get to the lures, other tackle or into the bottom, which just takes to much room in the boat.  Found a nice new upright box with drawers...now comes the fun of reorganizing and looking at everything (all with a bottle of Bleue.)  Then I can combine my line, and extra tackle in to the old box so its easier to pack up and haul up north.  It's the simple things that make life great.

When we were in the store, of course, I had to shop everything in the fishing section and then some...my wife said "you are like a kid in a candy shop."  I said, "or like you in a shoe store." ;D She just smiled and helped carry my treasures.  I had a budget in the store which, of course, I went over...her comment was, "what the heck you're always paying for things for everyone else, just get it all."  Can't beat that!

Today I finally got a line wet for the first time this year at a local pond...
It's not a real big pond so I was fishing for anything that would bite honestly, probably sunfish, smallmouth bass or largemouth or maybe some catchfish...
I saw at least 50 smallmouth cruising the shoreline, following my lures but no strikes.... and tried everything artficial I had in my tacklebox with no luck.
Disgruntled and frustrated after 2 hours of trying to entice a bite from fish I could see... I decided to call it quits and started walking back to the 4Runner. I then decided to give it one more shot from the dock.
Sure enough, the fishing Gods smiled on me and kept me from getting skunked today. A little perch decided to bite on something almost as big as he was...

I didn't care it was small, it was the action that felt great.

Going back tomorrow with some nightcrawlers and slip bobbers to slay some bass!

this falls in the annual routine but I always seem to procrastinate.. re-spooled the spinning and casting / trolling reels. Does anyone else find this extremely tedious. I even have the rapala line stripper that really helps . I know this is not tough, doesn't require an engineering degree but for some reason.............anyhow that and the miscellaneous tackle transfers . And , the line didn't twist coming off the spool...OH, by the way.. 21 days...

@ Dog - The walleye are in the shallows spawning and it's got to be over soon.  I know a few guys who have been limiting out each night by trolling in 3-5 feet of water with stick baits, I just went down and casted from shore at Hoak's restaurant https://www.facebook.com/HoaksLakeshore?rf=119883701361640  (https://www.facebook.com/HoaksLakeshore?rf=119883701361640), couldn't find a web site for them.  Just parked in the parking lot and walked down to the water but there were a ton of boats trolling around.

The pre-trip planning session is in the books, along with a few beers.  New backup rod/reel combo purchased, a new mepps musky killer for the pike, some steel leaders, and a can of 40% deet!  Our group is ready to make the trek north and everyone is chompin at the bit for the next 2 weeks to fly by.  The whole crew is camping out at Rossacres on Sunday for some pre-trip debauchery and fishing.  I hope everyone has a good, long, Memorial Day weekend.

My go to rig is a Shimano Stradic reel and St. Croix 6ft rod, but I picked up a Pflueger President reel and rod combo just in case.  The Mepps is black, red and gold.  I picked up a few nice pike last year on a similar color scheme, so thought I'd give it another go.  Have also had good success with the Red Devil spoons in the perch coloring though, or anything that happens to land in front of an agitated water wolf!  Fish those beaver dams, we pick up a pike every time we cast around them....

Flag and I got Liberty Call ready to slay some walleyes... changed the engine oil and gearcase oil and then tossed her back on the transom from the offseason stand...
trolling motor batteries are still on trickle charger, put those into the boat on the ramp before dropping her in the water.

Rhybak and Dog,
I've actually never had much luck using no real bait either on Kipawa.
There's a post by canuckbass where he mentioned these things.
I was in Crappy Tire the other day getting some junk for the boat and happened to walk through the fishing section (OK that might have been on purpose;))
and I saw what I believe he was describing.

http://www.berkley-fishing.com/berkley-bait-soft-bait-berkley-powerbait/1317175.html

I got exactly what canuckbass describes in his post, 4" color=smelt.
I'll give it a shot, worst case we usually grab a pack of worms and frozen swimmers anyhow.

Maybe he'll chime in and give us some more insight.
His post is in the "no trip reports" thread I believe.
Hope it helps:
Brent

Took the boat in to have some work done.
I already did the water pump, a bunch of small electrical fixes, spring cleaning and normal yearly maintenance (engine oil, fuel filter, outdrive oil etc.) last month, but I want to be sure she's ready for her maiden voyage on Kipawa!
So I'm having them do the gimbal bearing, all outdrive bellows and some other odds and ends while in there.
I was going to do it myself but it seems there are about 3-4 specialty service tools which if I purchased I'd be at the price of paying them to do it anyhow!

Charged up the batteries on the boat, getting it ready to go out tomorrow morning.  Relined a couple more reels.  Pulled out my storage tubs of stuff I take to Kip to start inventoring.

I've also never had any luck catching with the plastic baits, but I've recently been told it's  because I'm doing it wrong.  He is probably correct being I have no catches.

Packed my rods in their travel tube.
Laid out my tubs for packing.
Sprayed a fresh coat of water repellant on my shoes and rain suit.

Hi Brent,

I had no experience using Berkley Powerbait until last year. Last Jun I joined 3 guys from the US for a fly in trip to Lac Hebert (they had 10 years experience fishing there). Before the trip they advised me to pick up some Berkley Powerbait Ripple Shad (swim baits) for both walleye and northern fishing. I was amazed at how the walleye would tackle those swim baits regardless whether trolled or cast. The paddle tail on those baits provides great action and noise. We all did well with the 5 inch smelt (PBBRS5 - SMLT). I plan on using them this summer on two trips in the Abitibi/Témiscaming region.

Today was unpack and repack and label the bins that my son, Jon, and I are taking to the TBL Outpost Cabin. It's laughable how much STUFF we take. For 24 of the 25 years I've been going to Quebec Capt. Guy was my fishing partner. RIP Mark !! He did the cooking and I the cleaning, which worked well for both of us. He was, however, very particular about the things he cooked with, and our 1st year in the Gouin Res. the equipment was not good, so we (he) decided we needed to bring our own.-pots,pans,silverware,strainers,even dishes ! I got him to loose the dishes part, but the rest is still in the Kitchen bin. I decided to bring it all again and leave some at the Outpost and the rest on my Aug. trip with my friend Jim at our main camp cabin. Our boat bin is over the top too. Expect the best and prepare for the worst was our motto. Along with the usual tools, duct tape, lighters, rope, bug dope, and 1st aid kit we have flares, a rocket flare, an air horn, a 3 by 4 foot SOS plastic flag, a 1 million power spot light, and a 10 by 6 foot plastic side curtain from a pop up canopy to use for shelter! I know that's WAY too much, but I also know that by leaving it home it will surely jinx us! Surprisingly it all fits into the bin. Now I have to resist the urge to add more. All that's left to do is finish the food shopping and pact the clothes and rods and reels and load it all into the Pilot. Mid July can't come soon enough!!!

Really nice story / account Oarin.........

A very touching memory.  And it tells me that more people than you go through the same things.
i.e. I bring several cooking items 'just because I trust my own' .

Packed up a bunch of odds and ends in the boat, pulled down the old half camper top for the boat, fitted that up and ensured we have all the hardware for that.
Checked my list and checked it again.....lost my truck keys and wallet in the process!
This Thursday, up early and hauling the boat north  ;D

Went to trim up the motor on the boat this morning and she no go.
Turns out trim pump "up" solenoid was shot.
I got lucky and my new buddy at Rideau Ferry Marine was open today and had a couple of solenoids in stock.
Changed and we're good to go.
Finished packing the boat and the truck.
Hit the road tomorrow 4:00am, wish us luck!

Last night I got the opportunity to go out fishing with my old neighbor at our local reservoir (Hoover ) in Westerville Ohio. He has a Hobie tandem fishing kayak. Its hard to believe that a Kayak can be close to $3500 but this thing was cool! for those of you who don't know what it is check it out on you tube. It has a pedal drive system and is virtually silent with no oars. I believe it was 16 feet long. Also it has a rudder that is cable driven and a nice depth/ fish finder installed.

We were out fishing a shoreline 2 miles from my house with lots of drop-offs, weeds and all kinds of crazy structure. We ended up picking up 2 saugeye, a large mouth, a channel cat, 2 crappie and 2 white bass in about a 2-3 hour period trolling up and down the ledges.

I was really amazed how good the fishing still is in Hoover when you are even 50 ft off shore. Now I'm convinced i need to buy a small fishing boat.

Here is one similar i just think it is this years model:

Took Liberty Call out on Sheanango River Resevoir for it's Canadian Shakedown cruise...

All smooth, all good!
Got about 4 hours on the motor. It's runnin' like a top after the spring maintenance. Got her up to 21.3 mph via handheld gps.
Took it all the way from Mahaney's launch up to where the Shenango river dumps into the resevoir from the Pymatuning Lake.

On the way back, we fished at my Gpa's favotite old spot along the pillars of the Rt 18 overpass.
Netted 11 fish total in about 2 hours of fishing there.
7 white bass, 3 crappie, 1 catfish

@Mattie
those are sweet rigs. I admit, I do miss fishing from my old town canoe. While boats with motoes are nice, there's something to be said about the peacefulness of paddling to a fishing hole.

A two week plant shutdown starts on the 25th. Gone for two weeks at camp. Got some wiring and insulation work to do also plenty of fishing. Anybody in the area?....drop by for a beer. :) .......Joe

took Liberty Call out to Willhelm today. Tons of fishing boats out there, marked lots of fish as well. Caught a few crappie, no walleye, and one largemouth bass by Flag.

Poured concrete, pouring more later this week, worked on various other aspects of our home reno.
Yes, I realize that this has zero to do with fishing...
But, it's all I can do to just put my head down, not think about the renos at hand and get lost in a dream land where I'm already up at Kipawa!
At this point I'm calling it "mental prep" in anticipation for our trip in a couple of weeks.

Yesterday I washed and detailed the truck, vacuumed the dirt out of the truck, and then cleaned and vacuumed the boat, got out the extra seats and bimini top.  Packed up a couple of rubbermaid bins of essentials.  Only groceries and gas left to do before actually putting all the stuff in the Truck/boat and leaving early on Thursday morning!!

Cleaned out the boat, put some urethane on some 3/4 oak plywood for seat mounts. My seat pulled out of the aluminum on our French river Lake Nipissing trip two weeks ago.

Getting it and some tackle ready for Lake Ostaboningue next week, only 7 more sleeps.

Got boat back from marina, turns out transom is getting soft:(
Maybe I should pull that 454, scrap the hull and make a small speed boat using that motor that can get me to and from fishing holes in a hurry.
Boats, the toy that keeps on taking!
LOL

soft transom, geese... I small speed boat would be easier for the FJ to pull which just may extend its' life, thereby offsetting the coast of a new boat ;-)

Yikes:  a soft transom is an end of usefulness sentence for a boat.  Salvage whatever you can.
A 454? That's a lot of engine for a fishing boat.

Yep, we bought the boat as a family cruiser....if it were up to me I'd be back in my 16' naden with a smaller tiller steer....much less headaches......
Me and a buddy are doing a transom repair to his boat today, then perhaps tomorrow I'll get looking at mine to assess how bad it really is.
The boats been a lot of fun and we enjoy it, really hasn't been much trouble either so we'll figure it out.
Title: Re: The official what I did today that was fishing related thread...
Post by: Fort Wisers on July 22, 2015, 08:10:30 PM
Started getting ready for our trip next week.

Finally gave the boat a good once over to assess just how bad that transom is.
There is a soft spot on the upper portion of the transom plate but I'm not too worried about it yet.
The area is about 5-7% of the transom plate but the soft part is only 1/4-1/2" deep, behind that there is solid wood.
But its obvious we have a leaking outer transom plate seal, so I'll repair that very soon.
I sealed up the outter plate as best I could for now with marine silicone but will do a proper fix to everything later in the fall when we're done with the boat for the season.
Also took it to a local neighbour who runs another marin in the area, he confirmed there's still lots of life left.

Added a little holder for my iphone which I use for now as my GPS.
Also topped up trim pump oil, checked engine oil, checked out-drive gear oil, installed drive shower and tightened alternator belt.
Started loading tackle boxes, rods, life jackets and sleeping bags back into the boat.
Will do some more tomorrow night.
Getting excited now!!!
Heading out early Saturday morning:)

UMMM BEER

Packed some more crap (more to come) and added this very important feature to the boat:

The boat already had about 10 cup holders in various locations around it but NONE within reach of the captain's seat!!!!
Talk about dangerous, what if the captain becomes dehydrated?
Total rookie design flaw IMO.
Cheers:

Slapped my "Redneck canoe roof racks" on the truck tonight in preparation of our exploratory canoe trip planned this weekend.
Our plan is to drive up the Bearn road and paddle into Hunter's Point from the bridge to see the old settlement and church.
Should make for a fun trip.

Hey Joe!
Its tougher to get out and explore when you own a place.
The obligation is to head to camp first, do the usual work (which is no small undertaking), THEN, if there's time left over go fish, explore etc.
At least that's what we found when we owned.
That being said, there's nothing quite like the feeling of saying "I have a camp on Kipawa" is there....

Cheers

Bought my first fishing tackle of 2016... bass tackle, 4/0 offset hooks, 7" rubber worms with ribbon tails and 1/4oz slip weights... all I need to slay the bass... caught 8 last month in Florida using this method while visiting family.

Also, shopped for my next vehicle, fishing expedition worthy of course... no decisions yet but it's narrowed down to a Toyota, go figure.

Decided on my next overland/ fishing basecamp adventure vehicle. I am pretty excited about that but I won't be able to get it until this fall due to availability so 2017 will have to be it's maiden voyage north of the border.

Also bought some more tackle (shocker, I know!... haha)... for bass.. 4/0 offset hooks, some Tungsten slip weights and 3 packages of rubber worm tails. I am ready for spring bass fishing as soon as winter is ready to leave.

I hear @SgtCrabby recently got a line wet in RnR but I'm not seeing any pictures here to help those of us frozen over for the winter... damnit, toss out a life line to us Tex!

@RHYBAK that's an interesting video for sure... haha

I' have owned two Wranglers in my life... likely never again though because the QDR (Quality, Durability, and Reliability) I experienced was horrible.
Surprisingly enough though despite the QDR issues, the resale was decent on both so that was one of the lone bright spots to both transactions... When I had enough and wanted out, it was financially painless...

Being a RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety) engineer, QDR drives my purchase decision more than any other factor so I'm a Toyota guy.

@RHYBAK, @Dog :  That is a very interesting video.

I've operated both jeeps (model: m151), as well as tracked vehicles (m113, m60, CEV).
Video sure makes it look like a lot more fun than my memories are of it.
Personally, I'll pass on those tracks.
But, civilian suspensions are much smoother than the stripped down to basics and beefed up to take on anything that I operated.

Well, the ice in Western NY hasn't been the greatest so we went north to Calendar Bay on Lake Nipissing to at least get some fishing in.  I've always wanted to fish in one of the 'Ice Condos' and I'll have to admit they are nice.  We fished from Tuesday afternoon till Thursday morning, we didn't kill them but we got enough perch for a good fish fry while up there and enough to bring home for a few more.  We also got a bunch of small walleye we had to throw back since they need to be 18.1" to keep, hopefully in the next few years that will change.  The weather was pretty brutal with wind and snow on Wednesday but the huts made for pretty comfortable fishing.  I will do it again next year!

@JigginFool are you willing to share which outfitter you used? ... and share any pictures... this is intriguing to me... do you fish from within the shack? so you never leave it once arriving? never iced fish, not sure how it works where you went

We used South Shore Ice Condos http://www.lakenipissingoutdoors.com/south-shore-camping-ice-condos.php (http://www.lakenipissingoutdoors.com/south-shore-camping-ice-condos.php) and the accommodations were real good.  When we got there they asked if i wanted to follow them out on the ice with my truck which I'm sure is safe but I wasn't willing to do so we loaded our gear in their truck for the ride out.  Yeah, they had 6 'trap doors' in the floor you fished through so you never had to leave the hut.  I did bring my portable tent but the wind was too brutal to set it up.  Inside the shack were 3 bunk beds so you could sleep 6, a propane heater that heated it nice, propane lights, a small table and chairs, TV/DVD player which we didn't plan to use till they sent some movies out, a 4 burner stove with oven, pots, pans, glasses, plates, silverware, etc.  Planning on doing it again but with a larger group since it was a lot of fun.  I don't have any pictures since I forgot my camera.
Check out the web site, if you create a user you can see pictures that others posted.

Yesterday I took my friend and his son fishing. The kiddo caught his 1st bass (and 2nd, and 3rd, and 4th, and 5th!). We mostly used 4/0 offset hooks with plastic yum (I think) crawdads without weight or Texas rigged. I also used a shaky head jig. Top water was less active than it had been, but they were biting like crazy of the jigs and crawdads.

There is definitely something special about a kid getting hooked on fishing. Sadly spring break is ending and I will transition back to teaching 8th grade math instead of largemouths.

Yesterday , the core of the Coke Hammer group ,gathered at my house for the annual "fishing meeting ". We discussed , as we have for the past 17 "3 Season " years and a few before that ,who is bringing what meals ,who`s driving and what , who needs what beer ,who`s going and who`s not . We also went through the shopping list for the communal groceries and supplies. It appears this year our group will include me "Pike Mike"  ,my son Chucky , "Johnny Shad Rap " ,"Smurf" ,"Fro" , Fro`s son Kyle (nickname yet to be determined) and hopefully my older son "Fred"
I had my laptop set up to show all members of our group the required fish cleaning technique video as noted on this site .I also showed them the new slots sizes for lakers and eyes using cardboard models I made up .
Oh.....and we had a few cold ones , some pizza and wings as well

Bought lead split shot while in VA,as they don't sell lead ones in NY. Made a reservation at the Tem Rose Motel for my August trip to TBL with my friend Jim. It's really a nice motel, 2 large bedrooms in the "room" on the 1st floor with a small porch to sit and relax on. $109 per night. 75 more days until the outpost and 123 until lucky cabin #13!!!

@Oarin, Educate me:
If you can't get lead in NY, what material is your sinkers made of?
And what happens if you get 'caught' with imported lead on a local lake?

We can use all the lead we want here. But I can understand the conservationist viewpoint on why to ban it.

I think they're steel. Not as heavy and harder to use, very hard to reopen off the line once put on. I don't think there's a penalty for using them, just no more sales, so they'll eventually be gone. The reasoning is birds and fish will eat them I guess. I think you can still get lead ones in very large weights because they're harder to eat. Who knows, the DEC will do what they want. I wonder how many of the "suits" who head the DEC ever spent a day on the water with a pole in their hand or a foot in the forest with a rifle?

Monday night past:
Finally pulled back the cover on the boat, no surprises (Yet).
Got the batteries installed, water hoses on engine all back connected and the outdrive gear oil changed.
The outdrive oil change (which is normally a very simple job) took a turn for the worst when the pump blew a seal half way through the job.
This forced me to make an emergency run to Canadian Tire to grab another......
During this run, the wind must of have blown over my half emptied container of oil.
The boat is in the garage but I had all the doors open to "allow the nice weather in" (hence the wind too! >:().
In my rush to go get the pump I failed to re-cap said oil container when I left, so there was about 1/2 bottle of gear oil all over the floor when I returned.
Some saw dust from the "wood-shop" spread over that made short work of clean up and the new pump worked just great to finish the outdrive.
As a result of the emergency run, I ran out of time to do anything further and haven't touched the boat since.

I've been out killing a few Rainbow Trout on the Rivers.
I made and vac packed about 60 venison meatballs for our Pasta night.
I smoked and vac packed 8 racks of ribs
This weekend I'm smoking 11 pounds of wings for our trip.
I'm going to try my hand at making a Honey Garlic Habanero wing sauce and jar it for our trip.
Bought my Brandy today.
Just slowly getting prepares.
A bit anal but I don't care.
I'm not and never have been a last minute guy.

Did some phoning around...Leeches look like 49 dollars a pound
That would be 10 U.S. dollars ;D ;D ;D

Unpacked, repacked, and listed everything in my big boat bin and cabin bin and checked off each item on my master list on Wednesday. Today I stripped the line off my reels and respooled each with either 6 or 8 lb. test. Beginning to think about the meals and will soon be buying, vacuum sealing, and freezing some items. Can't wait for July and August trips!!

In the last week, I have done multiple things to get ready for the season... got my boat out of storage, cleaned it up (I always get some strange looks from neighbours when I am standing in the boat in the driveway pushing the vacuum back and forth).  Put all the nets, oar, extra prop, life jackets, etc.  back in the boat ready to go.  I gathered all my fishing gear (several little bags somehow make it back from various different stores throughout the winter and get thrown in a pile) and restocked several different "pockets" in various tackle boxes with clasps, lures, and plastics.

I also took apart a spinner reel I had spooled with mono-line - last year my friend used it and the spool seemed to slip or skip when he had a 3lb (fairly small) pile on the reel - I oiled it up and tightened any gear, screw or nut that I could see and re-spooled it with braided line (any advice on fixing reels which seem to do this skipping thing?).

Its cold and wet here in Ottawa today... season doesn't really open on the Ottawa River until next weekend (our long weekend for the Victoria holiday) - I hope to go out fishing all three days - weather forecast looks much better than this weekend!

A neighbour buddy has two reels he has had for a while, I took them apart and oiled them over the winter and he is buying two new rods and he bought a large spool of braid when he was in Florida for a vacation in February - going to help him load those up - he has never used a baitcaster so going to try to adjust it for him and put on a practice weight and try to teach him how not to get a back-lash...assuming I can remember how to cast correctly...

All this to say... I am doing anything I can to keep busy killing time (with fishing activities) before next weekend!   Just a little anxious.

I hear ya Greg,  Anticipation of fishing season requires immediate attention.

I've been trying to sort my tackle back to my local waters set and my northern waters set.
I spooled new line on my new trolling rod which will get its first use as soon as I can get back on the water.

Yanked the boat out of the garage again last night, gave her a bit of a bath and welded up a cracked weld on one of the wheel fender supports.
The crack is a result of hauling down HWY533 (north of Mattawa) last trip to Kipawa!
Fired the old girl up and made sure everything worked.
We might take it for a spin this weekend on the rideau to make sure all is good!

Took my boat to a lake about 60 mile's away (I think that's about 100 km) for some crappie fishing.  I was close to being run off the water by lots of big ski boats with way to many horses on their rear ends, and alcohol in the operators.   Time to go somewhere else for little me ...

I like redneck canoe racks, I used to have them too;  before i gave my canoe away to a daughter.

Took the Swift Kip canoe for a couple of short trips this weekend past. Sunday night my wife and I had a beer while looking at our next potential trip.
Might try to circle Turtle Island one weekend this summer, camp at the same beach we hit last year.
Come down Chenal Belanger and back up Passe Grant.
We will see.....fun to prep....
Anybody know anything about the little lake "in" turtle island?

Sold the boat.....yes this may seem to be counter to "fishing related" but there's a longer term plan.
We're currently planning on starting to build a small cabin on some land we own north of Mattawa (hoping to start August time-frame).
This will become our base camp for fishing / hunting. We currently have the canoes that we can easily slap on the roof of the truck or rhino and hit back lakes and narrower sections of Kipawa that don't get hit with 4-5 foot swells in a storm.
In a few years (after the cabin is a bit built up) we'll look at purchasing a smaller boat then we had (yet not too small, maybe 16'-18' alum) that we can keep at the base camp.
The idea is a smaller boat should be more practical to store at camp during summer months and much easier to bring into back lakes as well as hit some more remote sections of Kipawa.

The big boat was fun and all in all treated us well, she will be missed.
But we think in the interest of getting back to the roots (so to speak), time to build up a new base camp and then a boat geared a little more toward fishing is what our family needs in the long run.

Hey Fort. I was just looking up the area on Google Earth. Looks like a nice central location for all kinds of northern out door activity. There's great fishing in the Ottawa R. Been on it many time.A favorite spot was where the Beaushene River dumps into the Ottawa. But anywhere where a river enters in is good. Lots of structure. GL and have fun. It's gonna be an adventure to get it all set up. I'm doing that now LOL. My place is taking all my time and money, and I'm quite gad to do it.

Fort, sounds like you have a good workable plan.

Wish I could do something like that, but not from this distance.

@puckster_guy : yeah we built a small camp many years ago so we're used to the "adventure" that it can be LOL.
However we were all much younger then with no kids, so this shall be a new set of interesting challenges LOL
Its been interesting watching your progress, you're doing a great job and finding a balance between work mixed with a bit of downtime.
Its important because the endless building can turn a person sour if they don't take the time to enjoy now and then!
It's fun to see your dream become reality though eh?

@SgtCrabby : Totally understand the distance thing. We had a place on Kipawa and it was about 7 hours door to door from our home.
And even that we found too far, especially when the kids were really young. Part of why we selected this Mattawa area was a closer proximity to
home. Eventually we plan on retiring on this land and figure we want something that will be fun for now as well as practical when we're in our 70s-80s.

So we'll see......

Back to the topic of the thread, when the girls returned home from school yesterday we ran into town and hit our local Canadian Tire which has a pretty decent hunting and fishing section.
They got a couple of lures each and then spent the rest of the evening "organizing the tackle boxes" in prep for this new season! Cute to watch.....

So...what do you do on your wedding anniversary??  Go fishing of course  ;)!  Today was our 23rd wedding anniversary so we decided to get the boat on the water for the first time this year so we took a trip down to Chautauqua lake.  Wind was wiping pretty good so we tucked into a bay to get out of it as good as we could since there were 2-3 waves in the main body of water.  Had to be the best perch fishing I ever experience down there, action was non-stop and the largest perch were a bit over 11 inches.  We kept 43 which cleaned up to 5 pounds of filets.
