Title: Red Pine Chute - Update
Post by: Northbound on April 29, 2017, 10:19:20 PM
Folks, Red Pine Chute is officially under construction. It has been for several weeks. No more flat tires, damaged suspension or broken spleens....

I'll second that. It was/is nicely torn up last week. Being widened and smoothed out much like Maniwaki. The bridge over the Chutes will remain one lane tho. My jeep and kidneys thank you. (http://i65.tinypic.com/2mzjczl.jpg)(http://i67.tinypic.com/vgiu76.jpg)(http://i68.tinypic.com/29lmwc5.jpg)

Reminds me of the old Road to Clova in the Gouin Reservoir on the way to Martins Camp. Not a fun trip.

I see many kinds of mushrooms on my lot. prob is I have no idea which are good to eat or not. I got a couple of Polish and Ukrainian friends at work that said they'd show me. I've never had wild mushrooms, these guys go hunting for them in the local forests.

A word of advice when picking wild mushrooms........As the saying goes, there are bold mushroom hunters, and there are old mushroom hunters........ but there are NO, old bold mushroom hunters. Learn all you can from an old mushroom hunter. Get yourself a good reference book with photographs, and abide by the rule, if in doubt, throw it out. A world of gastronomic treasures grow in our forests and fields such as Morels, Chanterelle, Bollets, Lobster Mushrooms, Oyster Mushrooms, Chicken of the Woods, to name a few of my favorites. An excellent field guide is David Arora's Mushrooms Demystified. Happy Shrooming.

Really interested in this road project. That is a twisty mess through that section as we head into Dumoine each year. How long does something like that take or better yet is there a projected completion time?  Other than the people who have been on it, or will be in the weeks and months to come, is there any way to follow the progress of this?

Oarin I'll 2nd that. Brings back memories the Clova Road to Martin's on the Gouin or as we called it the highway to h#!!.
Don't miss that trip and the fishing is just as good in the Kipawa region.

Fishn Deep, that trip was 7 hours of absolute torture. One of our vehicles broke a tie rod on the way in. We had to bind it together with baling wire and pray for good luck! Back then we brought a chain saw in case we had to fix a bridge!! I remember there was a hamburg stand about half way in, really in the middle of no where, man, what a welcome sight that was! I went to Martins twice, the first was my first trip to Quebec. After that everything else for the last 27 years of trips to Quebec has been easy. Pete and his wife were good hosts, but you're right, the fishing is as good or better at Kipawa. I hear there's a new road in that is much better. 73 more days!!! Oarin.

Newbie question!  I just moved into my camp on Lake Temiscaming last August So I am learning the area.

Where is The Red Pine Chutes road you are referring to?

Thanks

https://www.google.ca/maps/@46.8347806,-78.6115056,9668m/data=!3m1!1e3

The white line running north south along the lake(kipawa) is red pine chutes road (Chamin de la pin rouge) It takes me to my camp and ends at the Bearne road. This road has always been a nasty piece of work. At the marker on the map is a bridge over the red pine chutes (rapids) That's roughly where my camp is. It's the extreme east end of lake Kipawa.

We have the same issue, many wild mushrooms growing around the cabin and not a clue what we can eat. My wife picked up a book on the subject for me/us for Christmas so we've been reading over the winter months, will let you know what we find and get you the name of the book (its at camp) for you. If you don't hear from us going forward you'll know what happened LOL.

I have those books also.
Pictures can be deceiving to me.

I was shown one mushroom ( Honey Mushroom) when I was younger and that is the only mushroom that I have grown to trust.

I will not touch anything else , not knowing it's toxic level.

How is the road back to Grassy? ?

Any idea why this road expansion is taking place? I am not against it since traveling that rough section is always such a pleasure but what's the motivation. Someone who is selling lots at that end of the lake or that rare earth project from a couple years ago that went very quiet? Any info?
Title: Re: Red Pine Chute - Update
Post by: puckster_guy on May 19, 2017, 03:15:58 PM
My understanding on the road renovation is that it's one of few roads connecting Maniwaki to the Bearne rd. Me thinks we're gonna see some big logging trucks using that road. The gov't doesn't give a crap about the cottagers save for some grading. However if big business needs a new road they're getting one. It's only helping us as a side benefit because we use that road.

BTW I just got home, the road got some grading but still rough.

Thanks for the info. Figured there had to be some business interest behind it. Wasn't sure how much logging was currently going on in there.  Would Tembec be on the hook to pay for that? Keep the updates coming. We drive into Dumoine July 3rd.
Title: Re: Red Pine Chute - Update
Post by: SgtCrabby on May 19, 2017, 10:41:04 PM
Puck, that sounds like a very likely probability on why the new road;  logging business wants...

Could be interesting towing a trailer one way and meeting a logging truck going the other way.  Been my experience that logging trucks like to take their half out of the middle of the road ...

Not sure how I feel about the logging. I guess they have a right to be there and I'm sure they're going through the proper channels and have environmental requirements to meet. It was a shame when I saw a satellite image of my very favorite bay in what I THOUGHT was a very secluded spot in the ZEC. Not 200 yards from the shoreline is a wide area that has been clear cut and a road comes right in. You'd never know it from the water. We've never heard any noise of a vehicle or any active working...I guess this happens in the winter or fall? Still it changed something for me. Man I would hate to be back there trolling by and hear reverse beeping from equipment working or something.

As far as I know there are about25 lots up for grabs averaging about 60 k each for a fully wooded lot. it'll cost you about 12 grand to cut in a driveway and clear an acre at the front (lake side). Still in mu opinion an awesome deal for a piece of paradise. In mid july I still have most of the lake to my self. Royal lePage has the selling rights and the land is currently owned by Commonwealth. A logging company in the area. more info on request...

Jig and Drift,

From talking with the locals it seems the government is funding project around $2.5MM but i believe the single lane bridge will remain intact.

There was talk I thought of removing it all together but doesn't seem like the plan now.

Thanks for the info. Governments don't spend like that unless there is something at the end of the rainbow. Logging must really be rocking or is there something else???  How long does a project like that take?

It will be a long 2 summers before its over then. Do they work on it all summer or wait till late fall when frozen? Isn't a lot of the logging done when the ground is frozen. Easier to get through the slop I presume.

@Balsams, correct me if I'm wrong, but you say they are working on the road between Pomeroy and Sassaginaga?
That is way up the bush road into Lake Ogascanan.

I was under the impression the road work is only the red pines chute road.
(Boy, I can't wait to try that new stretch out!).

Somebody must have heard me bitching about Red Pine rd. They spent all day grading it. Much much better then before. I had to bring the old tub to get some gas lines replaced at a Suzuki dealer in Katrine. One was leaking like a sieve. When i got back around 4 they had spread a few loads of sand and gravel and a grader was working it. Way smoother now. They even graded right up to my camp. TYVM

So our trip is almost here! We drive north on July 2nd and into the bush on the morning of the 3rd to Dumoine. Was wondering if there was anymore news on Red Pine or how the Maniwaki and Bearne are? Grader been thru at all? Puckster I am aware that is your neck of the woods, any updates? Thanks!
Title: Re: Red Pine Chute - Update
Post by: puckster_guy on June 27, 2017, 04:10:25 PM
Maniwaki is good. Different sections graded every day. It's more or less smooth. Red pine rd. was recently graded and in too bad shape. I only go as far as the bridge so I can't tell what the rest of the road is like. Good luck and tight lines on your trip. I've made time to go fishing the last couple of nights and it's been good. In both numbers and size. Including a nice Laker while trolling for walleye.

Puckster and others:

Thanks for keeping the updates coming.
I'll be going through there in about 54 days  (my countdown counter is for when I leave my driveway in 49 days).  I'll be hauling our complete crew, all equipment, provisions, and a boat;  so road conditions are important to me.

Wow...I can't imagine that trip. It would either be a lot of fun, or a lot of anguish. For me, probably the latter. Any more than 12-hours in a vehicle I start to lose it; throw in a gassy friend, a cranky comrade, and a traffic jam or two and I just become silent and brooding. According to Google Maps, that's got to be 25 plus hours in a vehicle. Whew.

"This just in. Upon arrival in Kipawa they found T-Bone curled-up on the floor in the fetal position...mumbling jibberish about jigs and leeches and something he kept calling 'his happy friend, Mr. Bleue'..."

Ha ha ha!!! I drink Bud at home so that would be fine. Coors Light is good if you've just finished mowing the lawn and it's 108F outside....other than that, just drink water. Canadian is not creamy enough...but I could drink it in a pinch.  ::)

@T-Bone , your guesstimate of 25+ hours isn't for off.   For the routes I'm taking to pickup the rest of our crew in PA, is listed at 29 hours on the road (+ those very pesky traffic issues).
It can become quite grueling, especially when I'm on the return trip when Kipawa is done till the next year.

Our happy friend, Mr. Bleue needs to meet me.

Am I in Canada yet!

Ya, just as you drive over the bridge on the right is a short driveway. You can launch there. You can drive under the bridge, just keep your motor up. even in the rapids of spring. I drive a 17 foot Crestliner and have no problem going back and forth. Excellent fishing in the area no bass lots of walleye and pike. Lakers are sporadic. If I'm at camp stop by for a beer.
