Realizing that there are other bodies of water ie Ogascanan covered on this site I still would be interested to see when people guess the ice will be out of Lake Kipawa or other lakes in the region .
86 .5 days till I return to 3 Seasons
Ha, I remember this conversation from a few years ago... I think it was 2nd or 3rd week of April - pictures were posted of the ice still being white, then that "black" colour, then slush then straight open water...
My guess is 3rd week of April...
May 5th works for me.
My guess is May 6th.
I forsee a warm spring and ice out on April 30th.
To try to spice things up a bit, I have decided to add some incentive to everyone guessing when the ice will be out on Kip. I have a $25 Bass Pro gift card that I will forward on to the winner. If we could enlist the help of
@wayne , to give us the final judgement call for ice out. In the future, if you would reply to this post for your guesses. I will try to merge the two Ice out threads only so that it will be easier to keep track of and not quite as confusing.
Just dawned on me, maybe we should have a deadline to enter the contest to prevent someone from entering a date the day before the ice goes out if they are watching it closely. Let's make it April 15, US income tax day. Maybe that is a bit late, but we will see.
Whoever wins the contest, you will then need to PM me your address so I can forward the card to you.
Have fun.
Hi Nancy, Great idea. Love to help. I will post my arrival the day I drive up the lake to the lodge. I will also donate a Kipawa Lodge T- shirt and hat to the lucky winner. To help everyone with there guesses, in the past 30 years my earliest arrival at camp was April 9th, ( by boat) and the latest was May 10th. Post your dates. :)
This is AWESOME.. Makes me feel connected to the lake even earlier in the season!! Thanks Nancy and Wayne.
Greg
Thank you
@wayne for your help and contribution.
Thanks Nancy and Wayne. I'll go for April 9th.
Thanks Wayne and Nancy! I will guess April 11th . Good luck everyone!
Thanks Wayne and Nancy ! April 21 st. Why not ?
Yes,thanks Nancy and Wayne ! Keeps things interesting . Maybe some other outfitters would like to ante up also !!! My guess is May 1 st .
Great idea - my guess is Apr 25 - Thanks Nancy and Wayne
Mayday! Mayday! May 1st is my entry.

Wasn't going to ask but Captain Crappie did it... what happens here on a tie .. ??

Easy - The Captain Loses! ::)
I would assume there can’t be a tie...once a date is taken you can’t repeat it.
Is April 28 still available?
May 3rd for me!!
Thanks Nancy and Wayne! I am going to try May 7.
A little birdy told me it would be April 29. Thanks Nancy and Wayne.
I guess my "week long range" is not going to stand up.. haha...
I'll go with April 26.
April 17th sounds good
Alwaki Lodge will do the same a Hat and a t-shirt to the winner
I will guess may 21
@Brian Thank you for your addition of an Alwaki hat and t-shirt.
@T-Bone Yes, April 28 is open. That was John's birthday so I will be rooting for you.
@CaptainCrappie Yes, I think it would be best if you picked another date since
@getthenet had already spoken for that date. May 3 is the closest date to your choice of Mayday. Unless you want to go earlier, then April 27 is the closest earlier date as of 9:00PM on March 23. Please post a revised date.
I'll guess April 23rd.
Woops! Thanks Nancy for calling out my mistake. May 3 it is then. I predict that it will be at 2:42 in the afternoon. I also see a cold front arriving the end of April allowing the ice to stay around a little longer. Sorry Commander. So close but no cigar!
C.C.
It seems I'm having a problem with the dates! Put me down for Rhybak's birthday! July 1, 2018.
C.C.
@CaptainCrappie I already took May 3, haha
Oops,
@Canuckbass , I missed your post for May 3. That's my fault CC wanted your date. I will go through these and post the dates that are taken this evening.
These are the dates that have been reserved thus far:
April 9, 11, 17 21, 23, 24, 25,26, 28,29,30
May

July 1
You can check these out and pick a date of your own
No
@CaptainCrappie I will not hold you to the July 1 date unless that is what you want. ;)
OK Nancy, April 27th. Thanks
C.C.
May 4th
April 6 5pm
May 8th
I'll take May 9th.
May 10th,
Doing a trip up to Red Pine May long weekend. hopefully, its gone by then.
April 20th for me.
Late-April dates are looking sketchy...that lake is locked-up tight and not a day above freezing per the forecast over the next 10-days.
May 13th.
11 May is my guess. Pike Mike - Deb and I are coming back after a year off so see you on the lake.
Got some direct local information from an inside resource; as of about a week ago, locals were "still driving trucks on the ice" and there is about "2-feet of solid black ice" on the lake.
Those mid-May dates are looking good now. I woke up to 3" of new snow this morning in Columbus. Winter just keeps hanging on down here...should be golfing by now....

Today in my local paper, 192†of snow this season so far “record†36†of snow in March “recordâ€
5.21†of precipitation in March “4th wettest on recordâ€. 37*f outside right now and the f ain’t for Fehrenheit ! :( The older I’m getting, the less I like winter..........
I went snowmobiling on the lake and in the bush trails Saturday and can confirm what T-Bone wrote. Two feet of good solid ice still; no slush...no appearance of break up anywhere. And the forecast is close to the freezing mark for the rest of the week and next. The local snowmobile club even announced that the trails were still open and they're in very good shape...yikes.
Those May dates for open water are looking pretty good.
No swimming May long weekend then!!
Did that once and was a heart stopper. Quickest bath I've ever had.
Looks like a late spring and I wouldn't doubt the ice may not be totally off for the may long weekend.
There is still quite a bit of snow in the bush and solid ice on the lake.
One foot of beautiful white powder on the logging road trails Friday. Went sledding again yesterday and put on 200 kilometres. Again no slush encountered anywhere. Quite a few people enjoying the late winter’s push: either sledding or working on their wood cutting pile.
If I could ever figure out how to post pics I would.
Wow, almost tempted to head to island on snowmobile.... But it'll take a day to warm main cabin up.

Very simple using imgur. Join the site and upload any pics you want. I just drag and drop from my pc. Then click on the pic you want to upload and a window like this will open.
(http://i.imgur.com/j8XBICC.jpg) (https://imgur.com/j8XBICC)
Left click on copy bbcode. Go to your post on whatever forum. Right click and paste. That's it, your pic is now posted. In the bottom right of the window you can adjust the size of the pic. Very easy and works great.

i'll get the hang of it eventually...
Wow , April 17th sure doesnt look good as of the weekend dumping we all got . Really really really ready for spring to arrive !!!!!!!
Look at last year's satellite versus this year at essentially the same date...clear difference in 'softness' of the ice at this point...both on Kipawa, the Ottawa River, and Lake Nippissing. Maybe we should start betting on when true 'opener' is going to be versus ice out.

wowzers, those to pics speak volumes. Having said that temps are moving toward double digits up there next week. Hoping for a warmer spring....
I don think the lake is going to see a Spring Puckster.
Looks like cooler weather then if June holds true right into low to mid 20's
There will be some ice chunks floating around for the opener for sure.
It could well happen Cracker. However they are calling for double digit weather next week. Anything above freezing is good. I can always put on a sweater. Sure beats the big city.
Image as of this past Saturday...still appears to be locked-up pretty good. I see Lake of the Woods is starting to get quite soft...black...water on top in areas.
I guess my April 28th guess is out the window....which brings up the question. If the day you selected passes, can you resubmit a new date that hasn't been selected yet? ;)
Wow T-bone... seeing it look like it is February... that is kinda sad ??? :-\ :(
The ice is still solid and 16 inches.
Will need some rain and wind to break it up.
I am guessing ice will be off possibly week before opener maybe later.
Still down to zero or less at night.
Do they wait for ice to clear before raising water levels on Kip?
Will be last minute to get lake levels up for opener.
Generally yes but lake is always a couple feet down on opener.
I thing
@SgtCrabby is going to be the winner (May 6th)......
Still decent snow in the bush.
I would say we are still two weeks out from 100% ice free or more.
Is the ice melting that fast?
Last I heard it was still 16 inches thick.
I'm making my first trip on May 7th. I'll make a dockside report...
ditto will take some pics and show everyone how much the lake will be down week prior to opener.

Good luck Puckster, I just checked the Algonquin Park web site for ice conditions on Lake Opeongo, which is some 80 miles South of Kipawa, as the crow flies, and the picture shown ( Apr. 28 ) shows no sign of any of rotting ice. My guess, having fished there many years, is that it will be at least 10 to 14 days before there will be any open water.
Not living anywhere near Kipawa, what is a typical ice out date? I guess more to the point, is this years projected ice out unusually late? Just curious.
Ice is usually out by the first week of May. The ice should be pulling away frpom shore now. Yet we still have almost 2 feet of solid ice. We have temps reaching the low 60's this week. So that will melt the snowpack on the roads and start deteriorating the ice on the lake. I figure about 2 weeks before ice out. Just in time for the opener on the 18th.
Gotta agree with the Puckster, people are still snowmobiling on Kipawa Lake, mind you not recommended in my book. Ice off will not be before May 14th is my prediction, I'll go out on a limb and say may 16th. Minus 7c this morning.
I keep telling everyone there will be ice for opener but no one believes me :)
The only ice I wanna see after the opener is in with my Wisers.,..
All the lakes in Muskoka are opening up now, hopefully Kipawa shows some open water soon. Hope they raise water level for long weekend.

OMG!!! That is classic! 😆😆😆 And Jay... I wonder how long ice would last in that cooler when it's being open every 99 seconds for a cold Bleue? The answer is not long... I speak from field testing. 😉 Block ice works way better tho...way better.

Hey Todd... Put your Blues in a large mesh bag and suspend the bag down deep or lay it on the bottom where the water temperatures approach 6 degrees C (43 degrees F). Put some cold Blues in a cooler for overnight consumption. :)
Jay
Puckster,
Was supposed to go up to camp a week Wed. but the snowmobiles still have the snow packed on the roads and too much snow around the camp.
Lake has 24 inches of hard ice also.
Trip cancelled and I would put my money on ice out on or after opener.
Puckster,
Nipissing also has 30 inches on it still.
No worries I gotta get the water running clean out the boat. Size up some jobs, beer to drink and r&r. I'll go as soon as I can drive in. I bought a sled for next winter. I'm still doing the weekend shift so I'll be there monday to thursday most weeks.

Dumoine has solid ice against the shore and snowmobiles running on the lake.

Photo taken today May 13-2018 at noon. Front of Kipawa is open but not too far, hopefully by wednesday. Windy today so should help.
Just home from opening up the cottage this weekend at Dorval Bay ...Laniel end is ice free as of today ...Will put the boat in next Friday and be ready for Opening Day...Can't wait !!
It was a beauty day in Kipawa. Frost this morning, then windy sunny high of 22 degrees. Ice blew off Hunters lake around 2 pm. Ice on the main lake in Kipawa should be gone by morning. Plan on driving the water taxis in by afternoon. Will post tomorrow night to be sure but I think the person who picked May 14th for ice out is going to be real close. Let you know!! ;)
Just for the record, there are two battling it out for the winner right now.
Balsams had May 13
Brotherlund had May 21
Crunchie had settled on May 16 but missed the April 15 deadline by a couple weeks. Sorry Crunchie.
Well the taxi boats didn't make the trip from Kipawa to the lodge today. Still ice blocking Beauvin narrows. Going to try again tomorrow. With this wind and temperature should be all gone by tomorrow, Lets hope!!
There is still hard ice offshore in the east end of the lake.
Even with the temps and rain there will be floaters on the opener
Careful out there.

Yes...got a note from Brian at Alwaki Lodge last evening and he stated he's going to give it a go today...Per Wayne's comment the narrows between Kipawa and central area of lake still ice bound. So, technically, ice still isn't "off" yet...
Looking like May 15th is going to win it though!!!!
Oh Man!.. looks like it will be a long run to Alwaki! Not sure I'm gonna be comfortable running on plane this weekend.
If your doing high speed runs be very wary of floating wood this time of the year. I saw several logs float past last week.

Like this one, from last year's opener... we didnt' see it until it passed the back of the boat. It went under right side, we were doing 35mph! My motor must have just missed it OUCH!
It was at least 12' long and had a bunch of big metal spikes!!!!
We towed it to shore and jammed it in the rocks best we could.

Dangerous! Man that would mess up your boat.
Well its official. The ice off. Left this morning. Drove the water taxis in around noon today. So who ever picked May 15th wins!!
Nancy if you could let me know I will mail the hat and t shirt or if the winner comes to Kipawa I can leave them at the bait shop. Thanks to all who participated. Great fishing everyone. If the contest is on next year lets hope the ice leaves way before May 15th. 3 days isn't enough tome to open a fishing lodge!!
Thanks for the updates, Wayne.
Wow, that log looks scary. It could mess up boat, motor, and then the entire fishing trip!
Thanks Wayne for the ice updates!
The ice seems to dislodge them. I see and drag several to shore after every ice out.
Thanks
@wayne Won’t be up this weekend but very soon, got boats already and final tuning this week.
Thank you
@wayne for being our official.
@Balsams, you are the winner! You have the closest official guess of May 13. Thank you to everyone for your participation.
@Balsams, I will be sending you a PM.
Yup second time in my life that happened!! The other was on pickerel river, came around a corner wide open, just happened to look over my right shoulder and it brushed the side of my boat. The bow must have swung over it as I turned!! That was in my old Ranger tiller again doin north of 35mph!! .... SCARY!

Congrats
@Balsams... enjoy the rewards - and thanks to Wayne (Kipawa Lodge) and Brian (Alwaki Lodge) for the kind prize donations.
Hard to believe mid-May this year... spring seemed to drag on forever!
Congrats Balsams!
Thanks also goes to Nancy for the Bass Pro gift card and for starting this forum !!!
Thanks to all, and thank you to the Administrator. I understand there are prizes from 2 lodge owners but not sure what they are.....thanks just the same for donating...I hope it's a hat or t shirt!

If I'm not mistaken a hat and t-shirt from both Alwaki Lodge and Kipawa Lodge. That could serve as my entire summertime wardrobe! Congrats!
Im glad it finally melted, we are going there to camp and fish this Saturday-Monday.
Wow OttawaPhil!! Great to hear - please give us a trip report on Monday - and dress warm!
What area of the lake are you camping?
Greg (...in Orleans and going on the river for first time today an every other day this weekend I hope!)
Will do!
We are hoping to camp on an island just east of corbeau. Stayed there twice before. Not a very good camp site but we only sleep there, spend all waking moments on the boat even cooking all food on the boat while we troll.

Uncle Ron's Island...I know it well. ;D Lot's of great memories center around that location.
When we're up there in late-July we spend most of our time with that island in sight...for good reason. ;)
Have fun...looking forward to the report.
Thanks for the well wishes guys, I will make you a report for sure.
