Post by: T-Bone on May 21, 2018, 09:51:36 AM
AHHHH!!! The lake is open...people are fishing it...and I sit here wondering what's going on up there? Looks like a pretty stable and warm forecast for this week...

Any updates from outfitters or those checking the Board while you're there this week are GREATLY appreciated!!!

T-Bone.

Well T- Bone. Here is an update from my end. Haven't  seen this many big females being caught in a long time! All spawned out. I snuck away Friday night for 2 hours to get a first hand feel as to what was going on. We boated 25 fish 3 of them were 28- 30  inches. Smallest was 18 inches. Small males are still milking. Didn't keep anything. All guests are catching big fish and  eaters. You can see some pics and video on our facebook page. Hope this keeps you tide over till your fishing trip!

Agreed partly because of the slot but also the later ice out.

Largest on the weekend was 33 and half and pretty sure there was one one around puckster area that was over that

I now have put two and two together and realize that Wayne is from Kipawa Lodge. I went onto their Facebook page and saw the videos of some nice fish being caught. I wish I could snap my fingers and be there right now, just the thought of being in Kipawa with a fishing pole and a cold beer gets me energized.  instead I will continue to toil and dream of a day when work isn't in the way my pursuit of all of my hobbies. I don't want to wish my life away and hurry up getting even older, but this thing called work is getting old after 36 years of full time.

Enough whining  :'(.........., is there any preferred technique in the early spring for eye's or is it just the same techniques, only shallower? P.S. When do the Black fly and skeeters arrive? Please don't tell me the same day as ice off.

Black Flies generally arrive when the leaves start to bud on the trees.
Mosquitoes arrive when it get to warm for the black flies.

generally speaking black flies will come in with the 1st heat (about now) with full blown swarms in the month of June.

Usually by mid July to Aug 1st they burn off.

Mosquitoes will hang around (if you are around a swamp or low land) all year and generally out at night.

That's the kind of report that makes me wish I were there now; thanks so much for taking the time to let us know what's happening.

But as the thread states...bugs are coming...and no thanks...never again for me that time of year. Whenever I've been up north in late-May, the black flies are just hatching (but not biting yet), or just starting to bite. Early-June is only for those who wish to be very uncomfortable with a 24/7 onslaught of black flies and skeeters flying in every nook of your person. Every nook. Never is a long time, but I'm 99% sure I'll never willingly go up there during early-June again.

For some reason I can't seem to see (or find) the videos on the Kipawa Lodge FB page. The only videos I see are from 2017 or one from May 12th. Photos appear older too. [scratching head]

Tbone, scroll down a little further to see the 2018 videos, for whatever reason, they’re below the 2017.

Heading says “Opening evening, 2018. Snuck away from the lodge for a couple of hours!“

Well, we learned a tough lesson!!

Spent the weekend in the Alwaki & Hunters lake area. Got onto a pretty decent trolling pattern Sunday AM with the largest fish being 26 inches, most were in the 19-21 inch range. Only hit 1 small laker as well.

Monday we had a very tough day, got a few but only in the morning.

I kept thinking we need to run further south, looks like we should have! Oh well, this is only our second opener, next year we will venture further south if we are not finding the fish.

We did manage to catch fish using a few new techniques and baits, so not all is lost :)

A much needed weekend none the less! Was a great weekend at Alwaki again, wish we could go back next weekend!!!

Yeah...maybe should have cruised down to Edwards or Butney Narrows just down past Kipawa Lodge...likely would have found the fish a bit more stacked there due to moving water. Oh well...hindsight is like that. And if most of the fish were in the 19-21 inch range, that's some fun fishing for sure. Nice work.

Thanks for the quick report...always good to hear what's happening around Alwaki Lodge.

Ha ha ha ha ha...minutes are about all you have left before those buggers unfurl their new wings and start flying...searching...looking for your blood and the blood of thousands, maybe millions of other mammals in the area.

If you remain very silent you can probably hear the unmistakable sound of the swarm...buh'gillions of biting bugs comin' to get 'cha....  :)

Area spray for repelling skitters for up to 2 months. http://myhousepests.com/mosquitoes/homemade-mosquito-yard-spray.html
One bottle of mint mouthwash
3 cups epsom salts
3 bottles of stale beer.
Mix all together until salt is dissolved. Spray around property and allow to dry.

I never though about spraying it in a boat, but it might work. At least around the property it will give you some relief while putting around outside the camp.

Smitty55 ,thanks so much for the link to the bug spray recipes . Our Coca-Cola group from the Hammer have been venturing to 3 Seasons for 20 years ( and Ogascanan prior to that ) dealing and living with late May amd now mid June bugs the entire time . I may make up a batch of DYI bug spray and try it out ,thanks to you .

Black flies were just starting on weekend, weren't thick or to bad in open areas. Wooded and damp areas they were thicker.
Watkins is best I've tried, use it all the time.

That was down in Jawbone Bay.

Was thinking the same thing earlier today; across, say, the top 5 "most-mentioned" fishing camps, plus those with private cabins, plus those that have fished the area via camping or other, there are about 150+ anglers hitting this lake each week. Probably more like 200, but let's stay conservative. That's over 300 individual experiences fishing the lake since opener.

Fishing Reports = 2...a whopping .7% Trip Report Score.

Yeah, I know what some people think..."Why would I tell you about my fishing trip so that you can steal my spots and my techniques." To that I say, "Oh, brother. The lake has 1,100 miles of shoreline...I'm pretty sure your 'secrets' are safe." I give people the exact spot, what to do, when to do it, etc. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes not. But all I really ever want to know is, "How is the lake? Catch anything? Have fun?"

So...where are all the fishing reports?

51.58...

Only the private cabins and locals would know this but there is not a lot of boat traffic during the week especially after opener right into Mid June.

Weather and black flies play a big part in this.

Going up on the weekend for 10 days so will post a detailed report when I return.

.7% Trip Report Score----well, lets get it a little higher

we just got back home last Saturday. Had our best year of walleye ever, jigging with leeches, water temp was 54F, bugs were good for this time of year but probably getting worse by the day. We also had more fish in the slot than previous years. More in the slot and more closer to the larger end.

best combination of weather, bugs and catching in 18 years.

One thing we notice each year and go hmm, wonder why. We fish in the vicinity around Alwaki and Kipawa lodges and every year we notice a huge fluctuation in the current throughout the day. When jigging it is noticeable, it can go from fairly heavy to light to almost nothing and then heavy again throughout the day. Is there a dam upstream and would they adjust it multiple times a day? Something else?

worst thing is ....354 days to go...

P.S. anyone heading up via Hwy 400 north of Toronto on a Friday afternoon may want to add a little time to their trip, there is construction with reduced speed limits. We left on a Sunday so no impact to us.

The Reports sound great this year and I am really looking forward to our first trip.

A little side note: A buddy of mine hunts in Canada all the time and he swears by a bug repellent device called a Thermacell.  He said that with the Thermacell he did not get a single bite even during the heaviest bug hatches so long as he replaced the wafers before they ran out.

You will notice current in the narrows more than anywhere especially Hunter's Narrows. I take note of the dam at the Ontario/Quebec border too. Sometimes they open it to let water rush down to Ottawa (to wash that Liberal stink??) and if that's open maybe perhaps the Laniel dam is open which would cause a rush of water all the way from Red Pine. I doubt very much they would open and close it several times a day. Too bad there's no rainbows in Kipawa cause that's where they'd be, in the narrows.

I wish I would have thought of a work report.

In a nutshell retiree report:
Slept in late, go for daily walk,  go shopping for up coming fishing trip (boring; flashlight batteries).  Try to chill out (we hit 100 degrees f),  get trailerable cover on my boat.
That is all.

I would suggest strongly on bringing and wearing a bug jacket with removable hood to go along with which ever popular bug spray you bring .I will be wearing  my bug jacket most of next week and when the bugs get extra hot zipping up the removable hood . Some foolish old man once told me , "Lots of bugs ...Lots of fish "

Well, I loathe the bugs as has been well documented. That said, sometimes I've seen when I hate the bugs the most I love the catching the most. Just sayin'....

Here's my proposed solution for the bugs. Spray the inside of your boat with a Permethrin spray like https://absorbine.com/products/fly-control/ultrashield-ex/.  Use it as a premise spray to repel and kill many insects, including those toe biting flies I can only hope hehe. As a bonus it will also protect your dog for up to two weeks from ticks and fleas and more and survive some swimming too. The same spray on outdoor clothing offers excellent protection from ticks etc for 5 washings even.
Can you imagine a bug shield around your boat?  :) I haven't tried it, but it does sound like a worthwhile experiment during the worst of the bug season. I buy it at TSC.

Cheers

Was up at my brother's camp for our annual father's day weekend (my bro, dad and myself).
Weather was gorgeous, we worked most of Saturday but took a moment here and there to hit the water for a couple of quick boat breaks.
Water surface temp rose to nearly 47F by Saturday afternoon but was down to 44F Sunday morning as Saturday night was cool.

Bugs were hit and miss but not really too bad considering the time of the year.
We did go for one ATV explore just before dinner and in the back bush the bugs were healthy, but that's to be expected.

Was good to get out on the lake, that Kipawa water just seems to be a little deeper blue than other lakes.....

I don't think your thermometer is working properly because it was warmer than that 2 weeks ago. I'm going in for my fourth weekend since the opener. I'll let you know what the temps are. The fish were schooling on rock points and shoals then. Water temp was 60°.

Depends on the day right now but it will fluctuate from 55 all the way up to 65 on a sunny day right now.

I agree I think your temp was off it hasn't been 47 since opener.

Although 50 feet down the other day it was 49.

59 yesterday and fish are right up in the shallows.

Fish the sun rise shoreline in the morning and sunset shoreline in the afternoon.

The last time we went up with major bugs (June 5th a few years back), we tried everything including Permethrin. Sprayed our clothing down every day at least once. Used 100% DEET, wore buffs on face/over ears, Thermacells, bracelets, every trick in the book, etc. and so on. None of it did anything. The only protection was to cover up every exposed inch of skin. If skin is exposed, it would get bitten. Not sure I'd spray that stuff on my dog though...may come home with a 3rd ear...  :o

I never have problems with bugs.
I look for a fishing partner that the bugs love , put him in the front of the boat and it keeps the bugs away from me.

On another note, I am there to fish, not worry about the bugs.
In June when I'm there I say.... Bugs? What Bugs? and keep casting

We are in Northern Canada.
The land of Bugs that will carry you away.
Deal with it.
We are on their turf trying to catch fish

That guy would be me; and I don't have any problems with bugs anymore either...switched to late-July fishing.  :P

And I don't care who you are, bugs will bother you at some point. They may be only a one on the nuisance scale for you, but don't tell me you don't notice them, or get annoyed when you hear that little "bzzzzzzzzzzzzz-zzzziiiitttt!" fly into your ear while you're sleeping at night. Mr. Rhybak...mister tough guy...but I know better....  ;)

Old Ed Brink used to swear by eating raw garlic all day every day, which would assuredly seep through your pores all day and night. Said he kept a jar on the table and that it kept the bugs away like nothing else. Never had the lower intestinal fortitude to give it a try. I always think of that when I see whole jars of peeled raw garlic cloves at Costco. Ed Brink....what a character. You know Mr. Rhybak, you may be the "new" Ed Brink. Quite an honor, you know....

FYI

Garlic is a staple in our camp also
We eat it raw.
Good for what ails you ;D ;)

I will admit.... I do smack them, I shoooooo them away, I swat at them... BUT.... in the 14 or more years going up there, I have never worn a bug suit.
I wear shorts at night, I wear sleeveless shirts but never ever put on a bug suit.

Up date from Red Pine road. Lots of heavy machines out doing their thing. Several new sections of road is now open too. The road is still fairly rough but bot too bad for that road. Construction is really moving along.

It was the temperature recorded by the fish finder in my bro's boat, maybe it's not measuring surface temps but measuring further down?
I'll check with him and also let him know it seems like it's off compared to what you guys are seeing, thanks

@T-Bone
One of my favourite parts of JAWS was Quint talking about all the shipmates lost to sharks and why he won't wear a lifejacket. In my opinion, more chilling than the star of the movie.

QUINT:  Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin’ back from the island of Tinian to Leyte… just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn’t see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that when you’re in the water, Chief? You tell by looking from the dorsal to the tail fin. What we didn’t know, was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn’t even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin’, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know, it was kinda like old squares in the battle like you see in the calendar named “The Battle of Waterloo” and the idea was: shark comes to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin’ and hollerin’ and screamin’ and sometimes the shark will go away… but sometimes he wouldn’t go away. Sometimes that shark he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. And, you know, the thing about a shark… he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn’t seem to be living… until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then… ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin’. The ocean turns red, and despite all the poundin’ and the hollerin’, they all come in and they… rip you to pieces. You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don’t know how many sharks, maybe a thousand. I know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday morning, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boatswain’s mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water just like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he’d been bitten in half below the waist. Noon, the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us. He swung in low and he saw us… he was a young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper. Anyway, he saw us and he come in low and three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and starts to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened… waitin’ for my turn. I’ll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water; 316 men come out and the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

Keep the updates coming people. Not that I need any more reason to be jacked up for my trip, but like hearing what's going on in paradise.  :-)

Blackflies are extremely bad right now and horse flies just starting.

Temp was rising up to 72 and thermal cline is @ 30 and 60 feet.

Slow troll with worn harness don't bother jigging right now they are on the feed.

A lot of large fish

Can be be a bit more specific Crackers ? For lakers? For 'eyes? And if they're on the feed, by wouldn't you "bother" jigging? So much faster than rigging...

Got a quick text last evening from Mr. Rhybak (at 3 Seasons this week). Said the fishing is "awesome", lots of "bigger fish" and he sent me a pic of a whopper over 30" he caught slipping. I've gotta hand it to the guy...he catches some dandy fish...

Can't wait for his full report upon his return...

Kinda quiet at this end of the lake. I got about 6 walleye, half keepers and a nice 4 lbs. Pike/ All back in the lake. A combo of trolling and jigging. All the pics were in 20 ft depths.

After so many years fishing out of 3 Seasons, RHYBAK knows many spots. On top of that, he's a great fisherman! Lucky me, I've been there on a few occasions to see big walleye he has caught - especially the one he had mounted.

T-Bone,

Right now the fish are on the move so unless they go right by were you are jigging you may hit them you may not.

We find when they are aggressive (right now) trolling will largely out produce jigging for larger fish

For instance last week:

- jigging 4 fish over 2 pounds (lots of small fish)
- trolling 50+ fish over 3-5 pounds with lots 7+ pounds and some tipping 10.

On the other end we were jigging (And continue to do so right into sep) the deeper thermocline @ 60 ft for lakers with white or brown colored tubes.  A really high end graph will greatly increase your results.  When the thermocline is really set in the summer you could probably troll or jig.  jigging in the summer will generally produce an aggressive chase and strike.

Thank You for the kind words.
I cannot take all the credit.
My fishing Partner Steve ( a.k.a the walleye whisperer) has a lot of input regarding the locations we fished . We had a lot of bog fish last week in the shallows. a lot of snap offs also from big walleye.
