Did you guys know about the new mine that might open up in the area that could harm the lake (Kipawa)?

A company called Matamec is drilling in the area for rare metals. They hope to mine in 2018. This could have a harmful effect on local lakes including Kipawa.
Some of the info is old and I was wondering if anyone else has heard of the situation.

Oh ya, we've been talking about it for a couple of years. So far it's just talk and may not go in (hopefully). I'm concerned as it's about 7 miles from my place as the crow flies. We shall see what happens...

I heard something recently somewhere that the whole project got shut down, but I haven't confirmed that. I used to get regular updates from a petition group that I had signed but haven't heard a thing for a while now. Great news though if its true.

Cheers

I heard the same. I know at one point Toyota was a driving force behind this project as well but heard they pulled out. We haven't followed it in a while now though so a lot can change.

The project is currently 'paused' the details and updates on the progress can be found here:

http://www2.mpmo-bggp.gc.ca/MPTracker/project-projet-03.aspx?pid=237&psid=3

and details on the env. assessment here:

We have been following this, however there haven't been many developments since 2014/2015 when toyotsu rare earth canada ended their partnership and ressources quebec invested in the project (just a few million, not the 300 or 400 million investment the company was seeking to get this up off the ground).

For those who are interested in water quality data we have started collecting data in the proposed mine area and hope to expand testing throughout the watershed. Our recent reports are now available in both french and english from our website www.kipawalakepreservationsociety.ca

Thx for releasing that here Christina. It was a real  interesting read. One of the tests was right near my place. Interesting how O2 levels were higher downstream of the chutes. That spot churns up the water well. I didn't know just how much O2 is infused into the water there.

There's been some news leaking out about the rare earth mining project in the Kipawa area again.  Seems there are renewed interest.  Mr. Norman Young,l Kipawa mayor,  seems to be more optimistic with this group than the previous one.
