I use worms a lot. Any worm will do. The longer ones I cut in half. Smaller worms mean more hook set as the fish doesn't have time to savour it they just inhale those. I find if I just lay them on the bottom with out big movement they seem to hit it more. But thats just my end of the lake.
Days spent fishing don't count against life :)
