When do the black flies settle down in the kipawa area most years?  This year, they were just coming out in full force when I came home from my spring trip (May 25th), and of course were gone when I came for summer trip (July 24th).

I'd like to move my summer trip as early as possible but still avoid the flies.  I'm thinking most years that would be around July 1st.

Whats your experience?  A friend said the flies were terrible this year as late as June 22nd.

June is a write off. Your fine in the cottage or on the boat, But dinner anywhere else. First week of July sees a drastic improvement and better as summer progresses.
Days spent fishing don't count against life :)

That's what I thought.  I've heard they have a 3 week life span, and with overlapping hatches July 1 would seem about right.

I've been up there last week of May in some hot years where it was bad, I handled it OK.  But summer trip is with wife and kids, can't chance it.

Now....if the trip will fit around my son's baseball schedule is another story.

Thanks.

As an example, I was Kipawa mid-July and black flies were gone, mosquitos and flys (ankle biters!) were normal - same as in my back yard in the city.

I usually go up the 2nd week in July just to avoid black flies.  We have never had much issue with them.  I use to go up the first week and July and they weren't bad then either.  However,  a friend of mine did get bit by one during that week.  He found out he was allergic to their bite and spent the rest of the week with a swollen face.
