Fishn Deep

After a 2-year hiatus the original gang plus 2 headed north to Club Trout Lake. Had a layover at Temiscaming on Friday night and a hearty breakfast at the Canadienne Saturday morning. Then half the crew went to Kipawa bait while the others checked out the new IGA for necessities. After that it was off to Belleterre and Club Trout Lake. Last chance to get anything you forgot.

The bush road
.

After saying hello to Noel it's in the boats and we are off to camp! A couple of crew members on a quest to Make Canada Great Again!

An hour or so boat ride later we finally get to our home away from home.

And so it begins. Time to see who will have the honors of wearing the famed hat which is a tradition. If you don't catch a fish you have to wear the hat and everyone makes fun of you. Some people choose to log hours in advance in anticipation of a bad day on the water! Some people traditionally wear it more than others!

Bingo first night found Mr. Marble Eyes!
.
Right in there they are. We have 'em surrounded men.

The action started off hot with each boat catching enough to make their arms sore from reeling them all in. And a limit of keepers for the frying pan. .

Day number 2 was much of the same.

After that the weather became an issue. Overcast and light rain was good for walleye fishing at first but then things turned to downpours, horizontal rain, and heavy winds. That combined with the cold made conditions unbearable on the water at times. Our other accomplishment during the week was burning all the firewood that was cut. We had 3 straight days of sustained winds turning parts of the lake that are typically calm into rough seas. First time we've ever seen large rollers with white caps and crashing waves in the little bay our cabin sits on. This made fishing tough, the fish were still biting but boat control was rough, anchoring impossible, and staying warm a challenge. Given the conditions we still boated fish on these days when we were able to get out there. One positive was that the bugs didn't dare come out with the cold temps and wind.

Interestingly the Northern Pike bite was off for most of the week. But some other lunkers were willing.

Why is this guy smiling? We still don't know for sure!

No pot of gold at the end of these rainbows. The weather finally changed for the good the next day.

It did bring some luck and a few nice eyes.

Another guy smiley. Was it the fish or the 12 beers and Captain and Coke Chasers?

And the light fades on another memorable trip.

One final shot of the gang before heading home.

Overall the walleye fishing was great this week. Caught fish of all shapes and sizes. No walleye over 5lbs made it in the boat. Had a few stories of big ones that got away. I witnessed our senior crew member lose a couple dandies. The one was on our last evening and the drag didn't give after being out in the elements all week. Better luck next time! Biggest pike for the week was 37".

After one of our vehicles had a flat on the bush road and being lucky enough to get a tire plug kit at the Belleterre general store back to the USA we go!

Tight lines and good luck to those heading to the Kipawa region!

Wow Fishn Deep, thanks, that was a great report. Love the pictures! You had some nice sized walleyes! What did you get them on? Any game cops checking boats or cars? One more month until Kipawa for me.

SgtCrabby

Great report.  I love how a picture is worth so many words.
I can't wait to get there.

Awesome report, thank you for the pictures.

Jay Thomas

Much appreciated your report and your pictures. I keep hoping to see some new boats and motors at CTL.

While we did catch a few fish trolling most were taken with 1/8 oz. and 1/4 oz. jigs tipped with a leech or a piece of nightcrawler. Color did not seem to matter.

I hear you Jay. The boats and motors are nothing fancy at CTL but get the job done.

Also forgot to add that the lake was a bit behind due to the late spring which Corina at Kipawa bait advised us on. Most of the walleyes we found were in 5 to 12 feet of water and typically in the wind blown bays.

Fort Wisers

Awesome report, love the pics.
Great looking spot!

600 miles north

Thanks for the report and taking the time to post all the pictures, I love seeing all the different spots in the area. It brings the report to life!

Brad
600 miles north is where I'd rather be!
