I noticed that some of the threads are slightly hijacked by conversations of baits.
Such as Hot-n-Tots.
Berkley minnows etc.

I noticed a lot of the walleye fishing shows are pushing the use of glide baits such as the Mooneye Jog.

Anybody considering trying those this year?

I  bought a few to try.
It's really hard for me to veer away from my jig/leech, float, worm harness week.

I will have to bite the bullet some time during the week to try the glide jig and the Berkley minnow.

I just never get that warm fuzzy feeling when using artificial s in Kipawa.

On Grassy we have always done well on salted minnows with leeches being a distant 2nd - with the ban this year on minnows - we had leeches only.

One morning we actually ran out of leeches and did not want to go in for more bait - we decided to try some plastics and to my surprise we actually caught a few fish on Berkley Gulp Minnows (black shad) - honestly the first time I have ever tried them and we were all surprised at the outcome.

I would not say they out fish live bait by any means - but they kept us fishing for an extra hour or so.

nice to know.

Thank you for that tidbit of information.

I am well stocked with those after listening to Canuckbass.

Silly boys...

And Mr. Rhybak...Canuckbass endorses the Berkley Power Minnow...I believe the Berkley Gulp! minnow is a different product. I really don't care, I won't be using either...  :P, but I'd hate to see you wasting your money now that you have that big rig to invest in.

In all honesty...I like a lot of different bodies, but always tipped with a lively leech or 1/4 crawler. Favorites are Fuzz-E-Grub and Foxee (when vertical jigging), and any 3" single twister (when casting/swimming). Tried a new body last year from BFishin Tackle called the Moxi...also like the Pulse from them too. Caught more fish than every before...just sayin'. Link to their site below if you're interested.

Mooneye Jig...hmmm....  ;)

You just failed the test....Hook, line and sinker.

Just to be safe, I have both..... In smelt  and Shad patterns

At this time of the year until about 2nd week of June, all I use are the following:

-CC's Wally Diver
-Storm's Hot & Tot
-Rat L Traps or
-Berkley's Shad Rap and Flicker Shad

The fish are deep too so the ones with the biggest lip get you down deep.
After that, I switch to leeches in a drop shot method over humps.

And yes I will have to try these Gulp Minnows this summer.

Never was a good test taker...but somehow I always got good grades. Must be my witty charm and good looks. HA HA HA HA HA!!!!  ::)

Uh...yeah...Power Gulper Minnow Smelty thingy...you boys have fun with that...pass me a fatty leech. I heard if a walleye hits a Gulp minnow but is not hooked it gives it bad breath. True?

For the record I hate anything Gulp...
I'm not promoting any product, just telling ya what works.
Anyone can catch on live bait! Lol. That's like sticking a piece of pizza in front of a fat guy.

Even top pros will tell ya artificial will catch ya more. It's all on presentation.

I like after a few days and guys haven't taken care of their live bait at the lodge. Makes for tough fishing.

Fishn Deep

I always go armed with live bait and artificial. Leeches or crawlers on a jig is the go to setup. Sometimes adding a gulp minnow grub or sassy shad outfishes plain live bait. It depends on the lake. One year we fished on a lake where the walleye would not bite on any artificials or artificial live bait combo. The lodge owner after a couple days finally said just use a plain jig with a leech, worm or minnow. We caught all kinds of fish after that.

When not prime walleye feeding time I will troll worm harnesses, hot n tots, reef runners, rapala tail dancers, J-11's thundersticks, walleye divers, shad raps, etc. The Rebel crayfish has at times proven irristible to eyes as well.

A good friend of mine always says the majority of lures catch more fisherman than fish. And another old timer told me all good lures will catch fish some of the time but none of  will catch fish all the time.

Anybody ever try WD-40 or other scents on their lures?

To answer Rybak's original question, Yes I am trying a glide bait this year.  I bought a Rapala snap rap and moonshine shiver minnow. I am one of those guys who loves to try new lures or techniques.  I fish live bait 90% of the time on Kipawa, but it just fun to try new things when the bite slows.  You just never know when something might land the big one. I have 55 days until I try them.  Let me know how you make out with them.
