This was our first trip to Kipawa, we stayed at http://www.alwakilodge.com/

We got a late start on Saturday as we could not get up there on Friday. By the time we got fishing it was the middle of the day. Our day
started off with a bang. On my wife's very first cast she hammers a nice Laker on a  jig & twister tail! We couldn't remember the regs for
Lakers so we let it go, we figure it was at least 24" good thing we played it safe ;) NICE!

We had a tough time locating any concentration of eyes on Saturday, but managed a few nice eaters and some smaller ones. I was fishing a jig/leech
and my wife was using a jig/twister & leech. She definitely caught most of the fish!

We never marked much on our electronics. We were checking depths between 10-30 feet.

Sunday we fished in the am for a short period and got a few small ones, stopped for breakfast and the rain and wind started.
So we stayed in and had a fire, we didn't want to beat up our old dog running in the white caps :)

By 3:30 we couldn't take it any more and went out. We decided to do some trolling and spent the evening trolling wind sweep shore lines
looking for where the fish were located.

I ran a board up in 10'-15' with a worm harness and my wife ran a crank bait on the deeper side. She hit 4 fish and I switched to a crank bait and starting
hitting fish as well. We ended the evening with at least 15 fish, largest was 18". Pretty awesome way to salvage a rainy day!

Sunday we decided to eat and pack then troll back to the launch. GREAT IDEA! Picked up 4 more eye's largest was 20" and another laker just under the slot!

Our fish were very dark, the Lakers were black and a most of our walleyes were almost all black to except the belly.

Does this lake have blue walleye because we got a few that had a serious blue tinge to them and the strangest thing after cleaning them and drying the fillet my paper towel had a light blue coloration. We took a picture just to proof it because we didn't think anybody would believe us LOL!

Over all a great weekend for a first trip I think. What a beautiful body of water, I can't wait to fish it again. It's clear this lake has a healthy population of fish and A TON OF WATER to do it in.

Great post! Sounds like another satisfied Kipawa customer.  True blue walleye, I believe, are very endangered or extinct.  What we catch in the Kipawa area are actually a variant of the normal yellow walleye.  The mucus they produce gives them the bluish tint...so say the "experts."  I for one have caught some pretty darn blue looking walleye... ;D

Ya we've caught them on nip but never notice the blue coming off haha!

So much water to find fish, we loved it!
Lots to learn on this lake 😁

Excellent report
Thank you.
Any idea what the surface temp was?

As for the walleye, no they are not blue walleye.
Just yellow walleye with a blue tinge in the slime.

A lot of members here think they are catching Blue walleye and are mistaken.
Only a few lakes in Canada were documented to have blue walleye and Kipawa is not one of them.
Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

My unit was reading 45-47 surface temps.

Thanks for the great report...nice to read some feedback from those that have been there recently. I was thinking about you over the weekend as I was following the weather there around Alwaki. Nasty. Nice work on the fish though...pretty successful little excursion if you ask me. Sounds like the fish were suspending a bit over deep water. What cabin did you stay in?

Hi T-Bone,

I agree, for a first trip not bad. Would have loved to catch them all jigging, but catching is better than not LOL!

I was surprised at how little we marked on the depth finder. Even over deep water, never got a good solid signal from
anything. I could be I miss interpreting the signal and they were lying belly down to the bottom..

We are going to try to get up in July after the bugs hopefully :)

We were in the Owls Nest.

Great report, our gang is up today but work got in my way. I'll head up soon for a serious fishing weekend. Bought a couple Hot n' Tots today just for that shallow troll.

It truly is awesome to read reports on here. Thanks Greg. Our group are at Alwaki from June 2-9. It will be my 8-9th year. Great location and accommodations are great ! I am sure many head up to Kipawa, get home and just don't bother to report (maybe a downer knowing it will be a year until returning). I will make it a point this year of reporting. Thanks again for the report...gets the blood boiling in anticipation !!

I always stock up on my Hot n' Tots for trolling...seems to work best for me as far as lures are concerned.  I've moved more and more away from live bait and to artificial lures.

Great report.  Thanks.
You fished through some tough weather,  but you did it.  Good job!
