Planer Boards

I was thinking about bringing a small inline planer board up to Kip with me this year.  There are many shallow bays that I don't venture into due, not wanting to wreck a prop but have often thought that there might be a few pike trolling those shallows.  Has anyone done this with any success in the past?

 I'm a troller by nature I never thought of using them on Kip. Sounds like a plan. I get many a pike or pikeral long lining. Always a good idea isolating the lure from the boat. I get lots trolling in 10 fow especially in spring, the prop loves finding boulders and stumps to tick off of.

I've never used a planer board...for those shallow bays we usually just cast a spoon in and retrieve for pike.  I'll have to give your idea some thought though.

PG, those many boulders sure are plentiful, especially along the south shore line in the big bay north of 3 Seasons.  Like NJ I like to target the Pike in the shallows but when I tried getting in tight the first year I was up there (many moons ago) the south shore provided just way to many stones for my liking.  I have a few Off Shore in-line boards collecting dust in the garage, this might be the time to shake them loose and give them a try.

 I got some dipsies I rarely use as well. I was gonna try some deep running lures in open water. There's gotta be schools of walleye Cruising suspended. I see them on the sonar from time to time. A planer board should work well to.

Planer boards would be good for us as sometimes we have more then a few guys in the big boat, planers would get lines far out and add a couple more. I believe there are some at camp, something to look at if I get a week up there.

Every year I consider taking planer boards, but never have. I always figure the lures are going to snag up, making it more of an waste of fihing time.  I have considered them for open water suspended walleye, but that could mean a lot of fishing and not catching time. Waiting to see what others think.

I'm confused...How are planner boards going to help you fish in bays that you don't want to troll in.

I use them every spring and with pretty good results, I run one in tight to the shore line with a shallow running med stick bait like a Ripplen red fin and on the other side of the boat I would run the other board out in deeper water with a diving crank such as a hotntot or a tail dancer.the key I find is always plan your troll route so you end up in a snag in the corner of the bay.Adjust you length of line to the shoe side board as you turn out from the corners

The boards will allow me to stay out farther from shore and drive my line in tighter to the shallows.  It won't help to get into the smaller bays but should help to at least pull the line in closer without me worrying so much about taking out a prop.
