Kipawa Help.

 I will be making my first trip up to Kipawa July 29 - August 5 and will be staying at Taggart Bay Lodge. Any info on what type of tackle for walleye and general techniques for that time of year would be awesome.  I will be bringing my girlfriend and just want to make the best out of our trip. Any info about the lake and lodge would be a big help. Thanks Again. Frank

I havent fished kip in summer yet, but I would bring a bunch of jigs 1/8 to 3/8 (incase they are deeper), twister tails, cranks, worm harnesses and bottom bouncers the list goes on!

Our group has been fishing near Lake Kipawa the 2nd week of Aug for the last 11 years. Walleye can be shallow or deep - you just got to find them. Some days we enjoy success bottom bouncing along a wind blown rocky shoreline in 15 to 19 FOW. Other days, the walleye are out in 30 to 35 FOW. We usually bottom bounce to find walleye and if we find a sufficient number, we'll switch to horizontal jigging or vertical jigging. The size of jig you should use is the weight you can comfortably feel at the end of your line - everybody has their own preference. You could try some slip bobbering too - its a way to ensure you don't lose too many jigs/hooks and it's sure a lot of fun to see your bobber go down. Make sure you make arrangements early for leeches because leeches can be difficult to come by in Aug. Have a great trip.

We'll be there the same week, but fishing up around TBL is largely different than fishing where we'll be in the central area of the lake. All I would suggest is get a good bathy map of that area and find any structure mid-lake that has deep water adjacent to it and explore it thoroughly vertical jigging. Don't try and bottom bounce it you'll snag-up and lose your rig as these locations are likely just a big submerged rock pile. You can try trolling over it, but that's not typically effective as the changes in depth can we wide over a relatively short distance.

We have been going up the a week earlier than you are and have had success with the images attached.  Fis have been at 20' some years while other years much shallower so you must be prepared for both.  Talk with Yves before you go out the first time.  Best of luck!
