Going to be trying something new this year to see if/how it works. Essential to this bait's presentation is to Texas Rig it...bullet weight coming all the way to the hoop in the hook end at the baits nose tip.

I'm not sure if I'm getting foggy in my anticipation for the trip, but I can't see how I could use a Texas Rig set-up IF I were to use a steel leader attached to the hook. If anyone out here is smarter than me or can see more clearly, I'm all ears.

The only thing I can think of is if I use a rubber core weight as my bullet; remove the rubber and gently "pinch" the weight to close it ON TO the leader, but still give it enough room to slide up and down the leader.

If anyone sees holes in that thinking, let me know.

Thanks.

I don't see why not. It shouldn't make much difference except then being more visible then a similar stretch of mono.. Personally I don't see the point in switching. I mostly troll and have had zero bite offs. One 20 pound pike took the bait from the rear and I had to dig down it's throat to get my lure back, still no bite off. I use a 12lbs clear mono for trolling just for the occasional gator. Soooo in my humble opinion if your worried about bite offs don't bother. Longevity is a different ball game it could make the spinner rig last forever.
Days spent fishing don't count against life :)

T-Bone, why not run an appropriately sized drill down the bullet weight so it would slide down to the snap swivel at least? Wrap the weight in some 80 grit emery cloth or sandpaper and then hold with pliers being careful to just put enough pressure stop it from spinning, but not deforming the weight. Lead is so soft it as a tendency to clog up the drill flutes, so feed the drill real slow and retract frequently to clear the chips. It's called peck drilling, much like a woodpecker looking for food.

T-Bone there are plenty of Pike and Musky fishermen who use fluorocarbon leader material, anywhere from 50-80+lb. It's not the same as regular fluoro, and it's not cheap for a small roll but it has many benefits over steel leaders. Depending on mainline, use your choice of line to line knots with desired length of leader, leaving yourself some extra for trimming in case of nicks etc. I can't see why it shouldn't work well for what you want to do, whatever that is? Are fishing for big Pike or just protecting yourself from bite offs? Always fun to try something new anyway. Speaking of which, with the amount of rock up there I can't see most of of Kipawa as being very bullet weight friendly. So that leaves back bays and places like Sandbanks. That's my guess for now hehe.

T-Bone,

Common on opener thread on an egg sinker then a red small bead then a barrel swivel.  After the barrel swivel leader then hook.

Not exactly what you are looking for but 20+lb fluro carbon will act just like a steel leader.

Not sure what you are looking for but this method does not allow the fish to feel any weight as it slips through the weight with the bead protecting your knot.
