Why would you eat Walleye everyday at camp

I didn’t want to take @Teach trip report any further sideways, so I’m continuing here.

Quote from: T-Bone on September 23, 2019, 10:13:49 AMNot sure why you'd want to eat fish that much though. [blaaaap]  If presented with the option (for the whole census of fish eaters..not just you Teach), would you prepare steak every day, multiple times a day if you could? One might think you'd get bored with it...

@T-Bone, to address your question/statement. I can get a piece of quality beef any where at anytime.  If I couldn’t and could travel somewhere once or twice a year and catch and eat all the beef I wanted, I might eat beef everyday for a week.  ;)

Interestingly, they sell quality beef here in grocery stores. Also interesting, they sell fillets of walleye also.  ;D  Yeah, I know..."It tastes better up there...". My question...better than what?

I agree with Hodgey though...some of those dishes Teach look amazing. Not sure why you'd want to ruin them with fish...  :o

The key word is quality. Where I live @T-Bone , shockingly there’s not one seafood shop, only grocery stores. Though specialty butcher and meat retailers everywhere. Truly Fresh seafood “let alone lake walleye” is next to impossible to be found. 95 % of all the fish I eat “I love fish” and is available, is all frozen. Unfortunately, more and more is farm raised and worse yet, from places other than the USA and from the likes of Vietnam, China, Chile and on and on.

What is available here and labeled fresh, never looks/smells that fresh and is shipped in, over many days on ice. Have a piece of fresh Sokeye salmon, then go to Aldi’s and have a piece of farm raised Chinese salmon. It like the difference between a nice piece of Prime, Filet Mignon, compared to a pre-frozen chunk of select grade, round steak.

It’s not just the taste and freshness, there’s also the cost. Fresh caught Lake Erie walleye is between $14 and $18 USD a pound here, if it can be found. While vacationing at Kipawa, it is free to those who enjoy eating it, as I do.

I'm good with walleye every 2nd day or so as a side dish to our preplanned meal or a late night snack.

So fresh right from the lake makes it more enjoyable.

I hardly eat fish at home because of the "frozen/imported" factor.

T-Bone

Because it's good for you?

I don't know...I'm in the huge minority on this so there's not a whole lot to say and make me "get it". And I may have stated this before, but when I see some of the harvesting-gone-wild mentality in my trips up there it makes me shake my head. And the predictable push-back is always, "As long as it's legal, I'm eating and taking as much as I can get." And that's cool...so I really have no issue with it...I just don't think I'd want to eat the same thing day after day...sometimes multiple times a day. I guess for some it seems to be acted upon as a right...not a need or even really a desire.

Just blabbing here...not trying to stir the pot up...

Eat your fish...and enjoy it! I really do wish I could. Now, if fish tasted like the filet medallions I had last evening at dinner...BOOM...we got something there.

I have a pretty short list of favorite foods and fresh walleye is one of them. I eat it while at Kipawa typically once as a meal and one or two times as a snack/appetizer. I have stopped bringing any home mostly due to what a pain in the A it is, to have that happen. My guess is the laws are properly set to prevent over fishing anymore. Quebec limits you to 6 total fish in your possession at anytime, where I live in PA, it is six fish per day.

@T-Bone , you have every right to not like it, fish is one of those things that you either love or hate, like sauerkraut and mushrooms. If you were at Alwaki, catching medallions of beef filet, how much would you eat  ???

Our group of four fishermen all love to eat freshly caught fish. Eating freshly caught fish is one of the primary reasons we go on fishing trips. The scenery, the sharing of nature and the camaraderie are other reasons we enjoy our fishing trips together. This past August, we were on the lake for 8 nights and 7 days. Three of our eight main dinner meals were walleye. I’d guesstimate that we consumed 5 or 6 walleye for each of those three walleye meals. As well, we each brought home a few walleye to share with family members (enough for one meal). That being said, none of us would consider that we possess the “harvesting gone wild mentality” to which T-Bone refers.

While all fishermen have the right to harvest in accordance with the sportfishing regulations, not all fishermen harvest to the same extent. Regardless the extent to which any fisherman harvests, no one should be made to feel obliged to apologize for staying within the rules.

I gotta weigh in on this one, though now a days I tend/try to keep my opinions to myself because I feel things don't change.

Like the hero holds of large fish vertically by a gill plate or the death grip at the back of the head of a good fish, the best is big bass by the bottom lip cranked so they are horizontal UGH!.

Tina and I have it down to a fine oiled machine for big fish.. as soon as you hit it the other person grabs the camera and net.. fish is landed hooks are removed or cut off with hook cutters a quick pic and back in the lake. No hero holds, no struggling to find pliers, cutters or camera etc..

Anyways, on to the eating fish every day. We don't do this in our group, but I get why they are darn good!  I take issue personally if you go out grab your limit in the morning, freeze it. Then go out at night and grab dinner. Technically this is completely illegal and you are poaching!

I have no problem keeping a limit, someone much smarter than I has deemed the lake can handle and set the rules. With that said if I had a camp on the lake I would almost never keep my limit.

This lake is nothing short of majestic and the fishery isn't far off either! But how long do you think this lake will hold out with all these groups of people freezing their limits and eating a limit or close to it every night they can.

If you have your limits in the freezer, then your done, catch and release only in my books!

Note: It is prohibited to continuing fishing for a species once the daily catch limit applicable to the species and the
water body has been caught and kept, unless fishing occurs on another water body or the catch limit for the
species is higher. In the case of Atlantic salmon, it is also prohibited to continue fishing during the day, on the
same water body, once the catch-and-release limit applicable to the species and the water body has been
reached. However, fishing may be continued on another water body

I think I will disagree with you on that one.
I think that a daily catch limit is a daily catch limit no mater how many bodies of water you went to.
it is a zone regulation ,,,, not a body of water regulation

Hodgey, I completely agree on the farm raised fish from Asia. I NEVER buy any seafood farm raised or from Asia. Google how their "farms" are run and you'll see why. Luckily, my local Wegmans store occasionally has WILD CAUGHT Lake Erie walleye and a local meat/seafood store called Palmers always does. $12-$15 per lb. I personally don't want several fish meals while at Kipawa, but some do, and that's fine so long as they stay within the law. Nine more Long months until our next trip!!

RHYBAK The note is not my opinion, I copied and pasted it directly from the Quebec fishing regulations.

Within a specific Zone (e.g. 13 west), the daily catch limit/possession limit is 6 walleye regardless which body of water you fish. However, on a particular day, if one were to switch Zones (e.g fish somewhere in Zone 14 where the daily catch limit/possession limit is 8 walleye), one could legally catch and keep two more walleye. The chance of this happening is probably somewhere between slim and none but at least to my mind, explains the note that Rico introduced. Just my opinion.
