Just returned from 3 days fishing from Miwipanee lodge in Kipawa bay

Hot hot weather 32 plus humidex flat calm and nice and sunny the whole time except for one morning some t-storms blew in

Never fished this lake before and I’m guessing fishing was slow compared to normal due to the flat bright weather.

Got out exploring 3 mornings and a couple evenings for a few hrs each time, and caught 4-7 walleye each time

The one cloudy am with some chop on the water was steady action for a few hours, about a dozen or so and a bunch of missed ones, then rumbles said to head for the camp.

Fan casting 5” paddle tails on jig heads produced the bigger fish of the trip, 3 well over the 53cm slot 4, 6, and 9.9lbs

All the larger kept fish in the slot were also on this bait,  smaller plastics, and worms got smaller fish below the slot or barely above the 37 line.

Most fish were aggressive feeders caught in 3-10 fow, a few more neutral ones in 15-25, 2 of the 3 largest fish were shallow the 10lber was in 12-14 feet, 6 lber was on shore in 3 feet, and one right on 65 cm was in 25 fow.

Amazing big lake spent a lot of time just boating around to cool off, and swim, water was warm everywhere, need a bigger gas tank.

Hope to get back there this summer for another few days, maybe try for some lakers and bass, saw one small mouth from Kipawa Bay, I guess they are probably all over the lake now.

Nice report reelpro, the smallies are starting to expand there presence on the lake for sure.  Glad you got to experience kipawa and the beauty in beholds.  Did you stay in the main camp or in an outpost camp?

Thanks for the report. Kipawa is a expansive, beautiful lake with a life time of exploring to do there. I highly recommend that you maybe try one of the Outfitters deeper into the lake and more remote. The fishing "I think" is phenomenal, especially when its coupled with the peace and tranquility offered by the Kiapwa gods.

What weight jig heads are you using with the plastic baits?

1/4 oz Jig A Jo  - the El cheap o jigs with extra long hooks and chartreuse colour.

5” paddle tail,swim baits

Cast as far as possible sink them right to bottom, then hop back to boat I use full length rod lifts so bait “jumps” off bottom 6 feet or so then let it fall back as you reel up slack.

Sometimes on the semi slack line drop you will feel a tick often it’s just when you lift up again the fish is just there.

The rod lift is done every time as if you where doing a hook set, rod at water level then straight up to 12 o’clock and pretty fast.

This “jumps” the bait up quickly , triggers strikes, and you automatically set the hook when the bait is grabbed on a fall - 90% of strikes are on the drop, the jump just gets their attention.

Works down to about 30 feet, and will quickly cover a large area and catch the more aggressive feeding fish, then often switch up to a slower more traditional vertical jigging with smaller offering, to get the other fish in the area.
