Trip Report - Alwaki Lodge, June 26 to July 2nd

A brief trip report to Alwaki lodge this year... "the guys trip"...

After not being able to visit Kipawa and Alwaki last year due to the COVID lock-down and various restrictions, I was extremely excited to return and could not wait.   It felt absolutely fantastic to turn the corner at Corbeau island and see Thompson island off in the distance ... the lake is just so awesome and beautiful.

Four of us went up this year, my Son and a couple of good buddies, in 2 boats.  One of my friends (the other boat owner) had never been to Kipawa, but only heard about it from us for years.... he loved it.

Ultimately, it just felt so good to get out of the house and dealing with all the restrictions and COVID imposed constraints and protocols.... being on Kipawa just made it all that better.

We ate like kings, we had lots of drinks, a couple of poker games and a couple more drinks every day. 

The weather was a mixed bag, but we didn't care - we fished when we wanted to and slept when we wanted to also.  There was a lot of rain and wind and a couple of cool days (we had a couple of fires in the cabin to take the chill out of the air and dampness out of our clothing and sleeping bags - this was great!).

Did we fish?  yes, of course... and we caught fish by trolling, jigging, slip bobbering, and lake trout trolling also.  Not huge numbers, because honestly, we didn't care.  We didn't even get up early to fish once... and I wouldn't change a thing about our trip (...well, maybe the weather, but not a big deal).

We did take one day (the nicest weather day) and went for a long ride and showed our newbie friend Canal bay and the northern end of the lake - around Hay bay.  We fished for an hour or so, then we found a nice little island with a small sandy beach and had a quick BBQ shore lunch, a quick swim (65 degrees!!) and a nice leisurely ride back home to Alwaki by mid-afternoon.

I did go through the chute twice - once, just to show my friend the area of the lake, and another evening to fish for about 3 hours.  Amazing that we didn't see one other boat on the water that entire evening.

Lake trout trolling... had some great success with several lake trout, and one keeper.  But strangely enough, we caught our 3 largest walleye while lake trout trolling easily 80 to 100 feet down and I also hooked into a really nice big pike also down around 90 feet (that was a great fight to bring it in the boat). 

Alwaki lodge (Brian and Tina) as always, great accommodations with licenses, ice, bait, etc. available right on the island.

My favourite place on earth for sure... I can't wait to get back!

Nice report Greg!! I'm really disappointed now that we didn't book for this past weekend, the weather you described is my favorite!! HAHA!

Greg, sounds like a perfect reconnection with Kipawa. Love the “we didn’t get up early to fish once” the feeling of a porch morning at Kipawa with a cup of coffee can’t be beat.  Like @tbayboy said, great to see reports again for certain!

I hope to have a trip to report on in September.
