Share your favorite rod and reel combination for each species

here is mine

For pickeral I use a light action, 2 piece, St Croix with a Pflueger presidente reel
For pike I use a medium action, 2 piece rod (sporting good special) and a shimano reel with higher gear ratio
For lakers I use my pike combo

I typically only take 2 rigs with me north, but this year I will take 3 as I recently hooked up with Eric at http://www.tacticalfishingcompany.com/ to fabricate me a custom rod and matching reel.

I'm a basic fisherman.
Nothing fancy.
I like my Ugly stick lites.
For jigging I splurged and bought a St.Croix Walleye rod.
For floating I use the Ugly stick Lite and trolling( I don't know) if it feels good, I use it.
Reels are either Okuma Stinsons or Phleugers
My basement has about 60 rods spread out ,so come packing time I just pick up what feels good. So many rods,so little time.

Good morning..
Pike and Trout- 5.5 ft one piece ugly stick with a Abu Garcia ambassador  level wind .. 17 or 20 lb clear trilene. 17 casts easier.
Walleye troll     6.5 ft 2pc  Cabelas fish eagle Medium action with the cabelas reel 8 lb clear trilene
walleye jigging  substitute  medium light action and a Shakespeare 300 ..
couple of miscellaneous spares will go along including the cabelas walleye combo rod that went on my first trip about 25 years ago but take another because its starting to show its age..

I own a couple of them that were my Grandpa's. He use to swear by them and so I have them more as sentimental value that anything... Every once in a while I dust them off the box and take them out for a spin. Amazing there still work so smoothly... Maybe that's why he hated when his customers used them (he had a rod and reel repair business is Hermitage, PA in the 80's and 90's). Surprisingly also you can still find them on ebay pretty cheap, I've picked up a few this way over the years to add to the collection. Money well spent! I carry one in my bugout bag as I think they're pretty much indestructible and when an internal part fails it's easy to repair.

I have a very old Mitchell 410 Special in my reel draw. Although it still works well, it hasn't been on a rod in probably 25 years. I took the reel cover off today and there's still lots of grease there.

         Jay,you could probably date this reel by going to the Mitchell web site Dog posted,then dust it off and give it a try !!!

Hi John:

I have already tried to date my Mitchell 410 special using information available from the Mitchell Museum. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a serial number/part number/letter anywhere. I'll mount it on a spinning rod sometime this week and try some casts. I'll report the results.

Ray's Rod & Reel Repair .. like my Gpa though, it hasn't been around for quite some time, it died when he did.
