Anyone ever see or hear of them in Kipawa? Lake seems to be perfect habitat for them with all the rocky shoreline, but the area is just on the northren edge of their geographical range.

Seen a water snake just once in my lifetime on Kipawa, that would have been about 25 - 30 years ago.
Other than that garter snakes seem to have the run of the mill.

Sure it wasn't one of those huge ribbon leeches?
Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

Always see one garter snake each trip, big or small I hate them all.

Agreed. Hate them all. Glad there have been little to no sightings by the regulars on this page. Garter snakes I can just have a little shutter and move on, a big black water snake, I'm pretty sure I'd need a new set of underwear and never swim in the lake again. Lol

Snakes don't bug me too much but what you do have to watch out for if swimming near docks is the wolf spiders (most locals call them dock spiders).
They get pretty big, can move faster than you can see and they can move across water.

When my brother and I were kids we used to swim off a large rock in the bay right in front of our grandparents camp.
I kid you not, there was one just flaoting across the water out there, about 50 feet from any shore or dock.
Spiders don't bug me much either but the thought of coming up from swimming under the water and having that thing right there in your face, that's just not cool.
Or worse yet, coming up from swimming under water and inadvertently "scooping" one of these bad boys up with the top of your head and not knowing it!!!

:o

I'll be happy to trade our water snakes (water moccasins,  cotton mouths😠) for all of your spiders and garter snakes.
😊
Last time I was out, my fishing partner swore he's taking a pellet rifle the next time.
