Hey all. We did my annual fall trip to our family camp on the Lac Green portion of Kipawa Lake, closest to the town of Kipawa. This is the 4th year of the trip and every year it becomes harder and harder to line up everyone's schedule, the pinnacle about 3 years ago was 12 guys.. This year we were down to 3, myself, my dad and a buddy of mine. Just a quick weekend trip, The 3 of us fished from Friday the 26th- Sunday the 28th.

Living less then 2 hours from Kipawa we left town around 7am, after a Freshco and Timmies stop in North Bay we were well on our way. We arrived at the cottage around 10am after additional stops at the Petro Can in Temang and Kipawa bait at the dock. We quickly unloaded the boat and packed up a lunch for in the boat and we had trolling lines in the water for lake trout by 11. The late morning/afternoon lake trout troll yielded 8 Lakers between the 3 of us. Dad and my buddy were each using lead core set ups and I was running a dipsy diver, which for some reason was giving me all kind of headaches and didn't produce a single fish because of the nuisances. All lakers were caught trolling 40-60' deep over 60-75" of water, all were released. Around 530 we decided it was time to move from our laker run to our walleye hole. First fish caught jigging was by my dad, a 33" pike caught on a jig head with a leech on a 5'5" light action rod- it was quite the fight! Haha After releasing the pike the walleye action began to pick up as we caught 33 walleye in between 15-22" of water, but the kicker was not one was a keeper. Back to camp for dinner and a few cold ones.

Saturday morning my buddy and I were early to rise at 515, and dad chose to stay in the comfy confines of his bed. My buddy and I caught 25 more walleye between the 2 of us, with 2 fish being keepers at 16". We caught most of our walleye around 18' of water on jogs and worms. We returned to camp for breakfast and to pick up dad and headed back out. Back to the laker troll from about 10am-2pm, I had stop at Kipawa bait and purchased a new dipsy diver hoping it would cure my gremlins from the day before and it did, no more tangled lures and the dipsy started catching fish again. The three of us caught 6 more lakers. At 2pm we decided to head back to camp for lunch and some R&R.. By 330 my buddy and I were ready for more laker action, we headed back out as my dad stayed behind. My buddy and I trolled for about 2 hours and caught 9 lake trout- they were on fire. They were certainly actively feeding because every fish we brought up was spitting small herring minnows onto the boat floor. Once again the lakers were caught trolling 40-60' over 60-75' of water. Lakers size varied from 14"-28", all released. At about 530 we had to pry ourselves away from the amazing laker action as we knew dad would be waiting for us. We headed back to grab him and headed out to the walleye spot- this evening fish produced only 16 walleye between the 3 of us, but dad landed a beauty, 27.5", once again on the 5.5' ultra light. Lol. This evening also produced 2 perch. We headed back to camp for a surf (walleye)and turf dinner and a couple more cold ones and hit the hay. When we woke up Sunday morning the weather looked threatening so we decided to pack up and head out before we had to do so in the pouring rain. Totals for the weekend- 74 walleye, 23 lake trout, 1 pike and 2 perch... For excatly 100 fish over 2 days.

The next trip was Sept8-9. This was just a quick over nighter with another buddy who couldn't make the first trip and loves fishing Kipawa, so I was able to figure out some dates that worked for both of us to get him up there. We arrived around noon on Thursday and after unpacking and making a lunch for the boat we headed out for the laker troll, same depths as the last trip and the 2 of us got 6 lakers. We headed back to camp around 430 for a quick dinner and then off to the walleye spot for the evening jig- the wind was blowing had and action was significantly slower then 2 weeks before but we managed 6 walleye between the 2 of us, but the average size being much better with a 16", 2-19" and a 21" that was thrown back. It took us 50 walleye the previous trip before we found a keeper, this trip 3 of the first 4 were in the slot to keep. The next morning we were up at 545 to hit the morning bite, the morning fish was a tad more productive with the 2 of us landing 15 walleye, and once again the average size was better then 2 weeks prior as we had 5 keepers of the 15. We headed back to camp to eat breakfast and pack a lunch and headed out for the laker troll. We caught 9 lakers with 3 of them coming jigging- we set the ipilot trolling motor and threw down some heavy artificals in 65' of water and it was quite productive as we caught 3 lakers and lost a couple more using this method- a very fun way to catch lakers. A laker fight on a walleye jigging rod is a blast. We headed out around 4pm on Friday as my buddy had to work the next day and I had a wedding to attend. Total for the short trip was 21 walleye and 15 lakers.

Pics of both trips to follow.

Great post,Willage TY. I have a couple of Dipseys I never use, Maybe it's time to dust them off. Were you using spoons or cranks for the lakers?
Days spent fishing don't count against life :)

First trip, pretty much all lakers on spoons. (Northern King, Lucky Strikes and Williams). Second trip was a mix of spoons and rapala swim baits.

Yeah, the walleye are great- but our group really enjoys the trout fishing.
