Title: I'm starting to lose it....
Post by: T-Bone on February 27, 2019, 02:32:16 PM
I've had enough of this winter. It's actually about 50F here today and I'm still losing it. I saw a nice dumping of snow in Toronto today and had to poke Rhybak to see how much he's enjoying that. He's not.

Any suggestions for a good book to read? I don't like to watch TV, so there's nothing on there to entertain me other than fishing shows. Fiddling through tackle and reviewing the latest Cabela's ad only takes a small amount of time. Work travel has been keeping me busy (Austin, Costa Rica, Orlando, Chicago, and next week Vegas, then Portland) but that's just fillin' time.

On the bright side we only have 148 days until departure for Kipawa...  ;)

Hope everyone is well...

You've got nothing to complain about nor does Mr Rhybak. You've got it easy.

We've had a brutal winter up north and I imagine we're going to see some flooding when all this snow melts.
This is going to be one of those years where the opener will be threatened because of a prolonged spring.

I'm in a mining show next week in Toronto;gonna feel like I'm south....hahaha!

Hey @T-Bone the mid season stretch is always a hard one waiting for the non-winter season to begin.
All I can say is there is still a huge amount of snow up north and no sign of winters end yet. Even down here near Ottawa we woke up to -25degC this morning.
Anyhow, not trying to add to your burden of waiting.....just calling it the way it is right now.

As for books to read, I have a few that I always return to that keep me from going stir crazy while not in the bush...
These two are kids books but good easy reads just the same:

If you decide you could bear the thought of TV (we're not big on TV either) and don't mind either grabbing a DVD or checking youtube here are a few movies / series that might keep you entertained:

TBone

Good books I've read lately: Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond; anything from Mitch Albom.

Hey T-Bone ,
The weather is getting old. Was thinking I would go to the camp next weekend to fix the water lines from the spring but single digit lows through next Wednesday make it futile. you at least are getting a few trips to warmer weather . Just hard to come back . If nothing on tv that you like, are you not a Blue Jackets fan?
Books- if you want something on the lighter side and haven't read them , Pat McManus has several collections of his short stories. probably easiest to get online. A fine and pleasant misery, They shoot canoes don't they, Never look a gift fish.. if you spend time in the outdoors you can picture yourself in some of the stories.
On another subject, looking forward to a little different trip this year from the standpoint that we are extending it to 9 days. Seems  I was able to talk the Boss into a slightly reduced schedule this year as I transition to retirement at end of year so the first thing I did was adjust the reservation. may give us a chance to try some of the places that we never seem to get  to. Also, looking for imput on Box wine to take . Trying to limit the Beer intake as I have a 30 lb goal this year, loss that is. Any one have suggestions... ? Stay warm all.

I really need to get a copy of "Kipawa River Chronicles."  I've been keeping myself sane by reading old trip reports and watching videos on YouTube...lol

Thanks for the suggestions all; of the book suggestions I've already read a few of them including the Kipawa River Chronicles (about 4x), Walden. I'll give those others a good look though. And yes...compared to anything north of Barrie, we've got it pretty easy down here. Supposed to have snow flurries this evening...the thought of it makes me cringe. At least next week when I'm in Vegas it'll be in the mid/upper 60s...that's nice.

As for Blue Jackets...they frustrate me...hard to spend a few hours at the end of a long day at work getting frustrated watching the Jackets.

Golf season starts in about 4 weeks...I'll just have to hold on tight until then.

Thanks again all...

T.

Why?
The Blue Jackets are all in this year and Torts is fun to hear interviewed.
A little win streak and they'll take 1st in that division.

Oh I'm so over it too. We've received 331 cm so far in Sudbury which is 70% more than average and we have more coming....spring can't come soon enough.

RETIRE

Then you can spend the winter months somewhere warm and fish to your hearts content. See Simon enjoying fishing in Antigua with his son Jack https://ontariofishingcommunity.com/topic/87251-boy-tames-snook/

Jackets and winning...very elusive when the money is on the line...

And I'll retire sooner than later Jay...already scouting places down south to spend a portion of the winter. Don't get me wrong...I kind of like winter...until about January 15th.

And I'm not sure how Simon does it...guy must be independently wealthy or something. Either that or he never sleeps...maybe both. And living where he lives, you'd better LOVE winter or you're in deep doo-doo. I just need to travel south for business more in the winter...

Nah @T-Bone you need to be looking north and learning to just love the snow / cold lol.
We sure have had a lot of the white gold this year, a number of places around north bay and area have collapsed as a result and not just little poorly built dwellings either.
We have't been to the Mattawan cabin in a bit now, going up tomorrow for the week, we're half afraid of what we might be going up to.

Hope you're keeping sane.....

Kipawa Lodge recently posted this pic. Plenty of snow up there for sure.

T-Bone
Just suck it up.
At least I ice fish through the winter.

If your fed up looking at Cabela's and Bass-Pro, start browsing through Fish USA like I do.

Good luck with the next month of winter.
Keep us posted

The photo with all of the snow on the roof is my cousins cabin @ Turtle chutes. Picture is courtesy of Bill B. His cabin is next door.

That's a lot of snow load. A couple of weeks ago, I paid three young whipper snappers to remove the snow from my lower roof (it was about 5 feet deep).

So Wayne what route do they take to get there? Sledding must be pretty rough with all that snow.

Hey Smitty, According to Bill he has tree line in place from Kipawa to camp. If you stay on the trail it's OK. I haven't been in yet. Planning a trip after the Toronto Sports Show next week. Looks like rain coming in Thursday, hopefully all that snow will slide off the roofs before something caves in. Yikes!!

It's that time of year where you reorganize the tackle box, inspect every lure and switch out hooks or sharpen them, check the batteries, check and oil the reels. Look at the line.

I have one old pike dvd from the late 80s...I put that on and do an afternoon of getting stuff ready. Also I pack...one bag for cold fishing, one for warm fishing. So once you do all that you have to go to the fishing store. Then about this time I try to plan the major trip of the year...where and with who? Then you gotta scout out the lake...and if it is a lake you have been to, consider spots you didn't really fish last time. Check the maps...check google satellite.

Once you do all that go south for a week in the sun and some inshore fishing to tide you over!

Chiaro - couldn't have said it any better even down to the inshore fishing trip - had one scheduled for yesterday but canceled due to a couple guys sick - looking to reschedule for next week

I have been getting antsy myself. It has been a long winter. But sitting here in Southern Ontario looking out the window, the snow is almost gone, temps above freezing and the birds are very active today. Spring like weather cant be far.

Like Chiaro I have been going over all my fishing gear. I pulled it all out to the garage, gets me semi-outdoors. Mulling over what needs replacing, upgrading or simply day dreaming of how I will fish at Kipawa. Every year its the same, what different lures do I take for how we are going to fish, and we always end up jigging. Tried and true and always much success. Maybe if we had a longer trip we would try more things, but gotta make the most of it while we are there.

I take a very large tackle box and only need a small tray. But as someone said on here before, and I have always subscribed to the same idea, I would rather take something and not use it than not take it and need it. As long as we have the room for it, why not.

Better to look at it than look for it.
