Hello All! I was shown a Quebec Government topo map last time I was at Alwaki that I would like to have. I searched the internet and found a place that had one for a reasonable $12.95. I went threw most of the check out procedure when it said it would cost $20 additional to ship to me??? Guessing the border crossing costs? Any how, I thought $33 sound a bit pricey for a paper map. So my question is, does anyone know where a guy could get such a map as a digital download, say a .pdf? I have a large format printer here at work and can print 24"x36" maps. The map I saw was labeled Lac Grindstone 31L/15 Edition 2(B) Zone 17 1,000 meter

If you could wait a little bit, you can purchase a laminated map at Pronature of the entire Kipawa chain of lakes.
I have mine on the wall at camp. I think I paid somewhere's around 20 or 30 CDN...?
I'm going sledding this weekend and I'll stop in to find out for sure.
I believe I have the same map that Limacharley is referring to - I bought it for $20 my first year on the lake and I bring it with me every year.
I still have it rolled up with all my gear and I bring it every year - very useful - for those that read my trip reports, we always pick a place on the map we haven't been to before and make that our destination for "adventure" day.
Definitely something worth spending the $20 (or $25 due to inflation) on. ;)
Hodgey, I just went and grabbed my map from the garage...
From the map..."To Order 1 866 828 4177 www.trakmaps.com"
I just went to the website, entered Kipawa in search bar and a picture of my map popped up - $29.99.
That might help you out....
Greg
Topo map or bathy map? Or both?
Try this:
http://atlas.gc.ca/toporama/
The website has changed since I last used it but the info is in there somewhere....
Thanks Lima, Greg, Everybody for your help.
What I am particularly looking for is just a better overview, of the broader area we will be fishing this year. Todd, very graciously gave me printed out bathmetry maps of our fishing area last year for our boat. They were on multiple double sided 8.5x11" sheets, which worked get in the boat "I'll be using them again this year".
What was difficult, was to see an overview of a bigger area and why I want to print out a larger map, covering a larger part of Kipawa for the group to see this year. Looking at the big map, really shows the enormity of Kipawa and how exploring could take weeks.
Greg, the link you sent was very helpful, the web site allowed me to zoom in and see the map in greater detail. I took a screen shot and I'm going to try and print tomorrow as a stop gap, till I can get to Pro Nature in July. I'll let you know how the printing goes.
S of Melvin, looking at that link looks promising! I'm on a iPad, so it was difficult to see its true potential. When I get to a desk top tomorrow, I will investigate further and report back also.

HAHAHA!, after looking around the site, which I got from the map only because you asked, I did the exact same thing - I am headed to a lake I have never been on before the first weekend of June for 3 days with 20 other guys - I found the lake on TrakMaps and zoomed in, screen shots and printed a bunch of mini-maps (folded, cut and taped some seems together) and even shared some of the screen shots with some of the guys on the trip.
All this just makes me more and more anxious to get my boat back... season opening weekend season is 7 weeks away for me now.

Greg, if you aren't already familiar with it, Windows now has a snipping tool that works great also. In search area by start button, type in snip. For any lawyers reading this :o I'm only borrowing the images 8) to be returned later!
oh ya, I use snip-it all the time, I cut/pasted several zoom in areas of this weird banana shaped lake together, and it has lots of bays/branches off - I created a consolidated word doc, placed all the maps to be joined where I wanted to, saved as a PDF document (which had about 6 snips) and sent it to my buddies.
They were blown away ... "must have taken you hours to do this" ... ya, sure, that's the ticket!
"We owe you beer for this map!!! Thanks!!" ...uhhhh... ok I guess.
(it actually only took me about 10 minutes).
Navionics app is a great resource.
Try this link. You have to shrink down and move to Kipawa.
http://lakeofthewoodsmn.com/map.html
There is the free one...at one point offered by the Quebec government.

The map I told you about will be available at Pronature soon. It's $24 CAD.

Thanks again everyone for the help. The above link posted by Canuckbass was a real asset. With using Microsoft snip tool, I was able to make one nice map 24"x36", with pretty darn good resolution.

I live on my Navionics App on my phone. Fishing many different bodies of water and seasonal patterns it’s great to have knowledge of a lake before even showing up.
Or for Kipawa, if you’re catching in an area and depth you can try another spot very similar and have great results.

If I paid for the Navionics App for my IPad, would it work as a chart plotter? Also, will it work without cell service?

Doesn't work without cell service I don't believe. Did you get Navionics or mapping on your sonar?
The boat came with a Newer Garmin Striker 7sv which does not have chart plotter.

Good unit.
Adding GPS and mapping will change your fishing. Garmin owns Navionics now so in the next year or two they'll be the best mapping units.
I sent a email to Navionics, asking about operations without cell service, I'll report back when I hear. I use a navigation app on my phone for motorcycling. It does not need cell service, as long as the state background maps have been loaded on your device.
For anyone interested in a chart plotter work around, Navionics replied to my email and said as long as the map of the lake has been downloaded ahead of time, that cell service is not needed.
Canuckbass’s suggestion may save me a pile of money. I was contemplating buying a new Garmin with background maps of lakes. If all goes as Navionics support suggests, I will purchase the app for my iPad “$54 usd†and buy a mount for it and use as my chart plotter.
I will keep everyone posted with my results.
Trust me... having a unit on boat is so much better then running iPad. Make sure you have a port to plug into as battery goes fast. Also any water can damage iPad, there is no waterproof covers for rain and dampness.
Navionics is bang on within a foot or two, can always do exact same line or stay directly on a marked spot.
The chip for Kipawa is extra but certainly worth it in my opinion.

Since I have the 3 year old Garmin that came with the boat, I cringe thinking of buying another unit. I see this as a possible option, I have a 12v port on the dash so I can power the Ipad. I might spring for a good waterproof case for it, if it works as it is supposed.
I’ll see when you’re up there and hopefully meet up, I have several spots all close run from where you stay.

I believe I got free depth maps from Quebec tourism say 15 years ago. It would be old school, print map on paper. Try contacting them. https://www.quebecoriginal.com/en-ca/vacation-planning/contact-us

Thanks, I was able to cobble together a map that serve my purposes well using screen shots, but thanks!
