Bugs getting much better now. They're still around mostly mornings and evenings now, blackflies seem to be dying off.

That truly is good news!

One of the reasons we go at the end of July or beginning of August is so that the black flies die off...mosquitos rarely bother me, even without spray, but those little black flies...ugh!
Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

It's good to hear the bugs are dying off... @NortonJoe I agree... we shifted our week to the same time of year for the same reason.
One more cast...

I was steered by members here to go the end of July for the same reason.  ;D

Hey guys.  I'm sitting at the main lodge as I write - and sitting outside - it is just beautiful out!!

Yes - the bugs are dying off - not what I was told by friends who were here 3 weeks ago - very different (a lot less) but the horse and dear flies are around (very few mosquito and very few black flies)

Visited the old church 2 days ago - very run down and weathered since my last visit 3 years ago.  Awesome drone footage to come!   Also visited canal bay  (showed the newbies).

Fishing has been ok - we have not fished hard with a complete day off and slept in a couple days  - 2 lakers, 4 bass, 2 pike and the remainder walleye.

Nap time  then burgers then some trolling.

Cheers to all.

Oh and highway 533 - the first 14km near Mattawa was all loose gravel - I went extremely slow - I was told today that it is on better shape as they oiled it (sprayed it) since we got here.

Thanks Greg for the real time update!

Tonight was a very calm night with little to no wind - so it was expected that more bugs show up as we trolled.  Oh well!

The only time we felt they were absolutely nuts is when we walked behind the church to the old school house through the Forrest.  We woke them up then!!  We practically ran back to the boat.

We'll be up there is a couple of weeks.
Keep the updates coming!

Stop by  on the way home if you got time. Lots of improvements to the camp since you last saw it. I'll buy the beer this time :)

I was up recently (July 18-21) staying near turtle chute and the bugs were very good.  Only annoying flies that seemed like house flies that didn't bite and mosquitos came out somewhat when it got dark.

Greg

The last hot hot days of our trip last week brought out more horse flies and dear flies - attacking the ankles while trolling in the boat.

This is one of the reasons I prefer fishing in the fall.
Cooler weather = no bugs !
I'll be up there July 28 to Aug. 4 with the family, but have a week off in October set aside for myself.
Not sure if I'm going to hunt or fish yet. Maybe both !   ;)
