Trump enlists Pentagon on rare earth magnets amid Chinese threat

Bloomberg News | July 23, 2019 | 11:07 am Intelligence USA Rare Earth

President Donald Trump on Monday ordered the U.S. Defense Department to spur the production of a slew of rare-earth magnets used in consumer electronics, military hardware and medical research, amid concerns China will restrict exports of the products.

Trump invoked the 69-year-old Defense Production Act â€" once used to preserve American steelmaking capacity â€" to remedy what he called “a shortfall” in production of the super-strong magnets made with rare-earth minerals neodymium and samarium.

Trump’s orders Monday singled out magnets made of neodymium, iron and boron as well as those made with samarium and cobalt

U.S. capacity to produce the magnets “is essential to the national defense,” Trump asserted in issuing the designations Monday. Without action, Trump said, American industry “cannot reasonably be expected to provide the production capability” for the products.

The Defense Production Act allows the president to prioritize contracts for materials, equipment and services in order to preserve or build up domestic manufacturing capabilities. It has been invoked to compel purchases of semiconductor manufacturing equipment so companies could churn out radiation-hardened microelectronics used by the military â€" such a niche market that businesses might not have made the investment on their own. It has also been deployed to finance research and procurement projects in lithium ion batteries, lightweight ammunition and other technologies.

Trump’s orders Monday singled out magnets made of neodymium, iron and boron as well as those made with samarium and cobalt.

The action follows a Trump administration report in June asserting that the U.S. needs a stable supply of critical minerals to ensure U.S. economic prosperity and the national defense. At the time, the Trump administration promised to take “unprecedented action” to ensure the U.S. wouldn’t be cut off from supplies of rare earths, a group of 17 obscure but vital elements whose production is dominated by China.

Matamec is now called Quebec Precious Metals Corporation as they merged with another company. They still own the Kipawa deposit. Interestingly enough, the Quebec government are partners in that claim.

I never drive down the Maniwake that far so I am unaware if there is still exploration going on? Properties get flipped all the time. Should it get sold to a bigger player (perhaps a US giant) maybe they will push for development. Who knows.??

I read another article that EV production increased by 24% last year. They need that rare earth to make batteries.

I'm in the exploration business and own a cottage on Hunter's Lake....that's why I'm interested.

@limacharley I've been meaning to mention this. I was doing a Ebay search a while ago for a KIpawa map. When the results came up, a lot of what was listed for sale and listed in that search, were rocks/minerals with names I didn't recognize being sold for quite a bit of money. One was called AGRELLITE and being sold for $50 usd, a lot of money for a chunk of rock.  ???

I googled AGRELITE. Looks a lot like the rocks I have at my place. Kinda looks like quartz. I've been told by geologists that where there's quartz, there's GOLD.
The Kipawa basin is very close to the Abitibi Gold belt stretching from Wawa, Ontario all the way to Val D'Or, Quebec. I pass through that area on sales calls and there are GOLD MINES everywhere!
Malartic is an open pit gold mine-the biggest in Canada.

I swear when I look into the creek at my place, there's specks of gold glistening in the sun.
