This will be our last trip to Lake Nipissing! Where is Ontario's MNR heads at!!

I just checked the regulations and they changed again for this year on Lake Nipissing. Why does MNR here in Ontario make
such bad decisions!!

They have changed the limit to 2 walleye over 18.2 inches..

So we want to improve the walleye size and numbers on this lake so we are only going to let people keep the largest of the breeding stock!

Way to go Ontario!

Here are the new regulations pertaining to Nipissing for January 2022

Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass - open from
January 1 to March 15 and third Saturday in
May to November 30
• Muskellunge - open from third Saturday in June
to November 30
• Muskellunge - S-1 and C-0; must be greater
than 137 cm
• Northern Pike - S-4 and C-2; not more than 1
greater than 61 cm, none greater than 86 cm
• Walleye and Yellow Perch - open from January
1 to March 15 and third Saturday in May to
October 15
• Walleye - S-2 and C-1; must be between
40-45 cm

Thanks ya, I read the 2022 regs instead by mistake.. but not much hope they are giving you a whole 2 inches to catch a fish you can keep.. it's joke!

I have fished Nip a few times since 2015 and my Plant Manager fishes just about every weekend
and 99% of the time the fish we catch are in between 15" and 17.5".
We were always looking for that elusive 18.1"

The regs today reflect what is actually in the lake. Now all those fish we caught previously are
a little bigger but you can bet there will be an abundance in the right eating class.
In fact the creel surveys prove that out.

By allowing anglers to keep smaller walleye leaves the bigger ones to spawn.

That's interesting! I wonder if depends on the area of the lake. I used to fish the Callander area, a long time ago. I can believe there are a lot of slot fish in that area.

We moved to the west arm because it's more scenic and less crowding. I'm sure there are a ton of slot fish in the west arm as well but we struggle to get fish in the slot, most of the fish we have been
catching are above the slot. This is fine if you are local but when your spending 1500 - 2000 for 3 days of fishing and can only put 2 fish in the boat, it's just not worth it.

At least to me anyways. I would like to try the central part of the lake, there's gotta be a ton of productive shoals out there!

I’ll never get it. I travel 1,600 miles round trip, put 100s of fish in the boat, and keep none…and it’s probably the best investment I make every year. Fishing isn’t about how many fish you can keep and eat…I thought it was a fun sport to pass time in an enjoyment of the outdoors.

Eh, man nobody judging, that's a great way to look at it! Nothing wrong with catch and release at all and I totally get it!

Personally, if I was just looking for catch & release fishing, I would be fishing small mouth or musky, a much better fight.

We love to just be on the water and enjoy the outdoors as well, part of our enjoyment is keeping some walleye to eat whether it be in camp or at home. I actually really like doing a fish fry at home. It is fun to  have the group come over and enjoy it together. I find we spend the dinner talking about past trips etc.. it's great for reminiscing when you can't be there

My real beef is with how the lake is managed, if they really want to help the lake they would shut down the ice season and commercial fishing. If this would happen I would be ok only being able to keep 2 fish per angler, to support a viable walleye population, conveniently 3 hours from my home.

That slot size would be frustrating for those looking to have a shore lunch or fish fry at camp. I think kipawa has an ideal slot, but it may depend on the Walleye population currently in Nipissing. They'll likely flip the slot when this run of smaller walleye get bigger.

Just stop in to ProNature on your way in. To me it's just the easiest way. I did a couple of days ago was out in 15 minutes. Then hit Stop 102...
