Well...it appears winter is holding on here in North America even though the calendar says spring. We have snow forecasted here in central Ohio this weekend, and I know northern Ohio got a couple inches this past weekend...more coming this weekend too. Sheesh...I should be golfing every Sunday by now. Anyway...

I see from area web cams and such that winter has its grip tightly on our Kipawa latitude line...from Lake of the Woods, to Chapleau, to Timmins...snow and no sign of any ice break-up...or even melting. A friend of mine sent me a picture of Lake Kipawa near town serveral years ago when he went up the first week of April. Lake was clear of ice and snow, though 'down' about 4-feet from summer normals...fully able to navigate by boat though.

What's the thinking from the Kipawa area board members? Late break-up this year? How much ice is still on the lake? I know this can cause some 'opening preparation' issues for outfitters that have remote camps as the ice needs to be really solid or gone in order to get over to their camp to prep things for season that is seemingly just around the corner.

Thanks for the info...

Bracebridge is getting snow today!! As long as the ice melts we can make an early opening.

Are you bored and trying to stir the pot  ;D
It's only the first week of April.
I normally still do some ice fishing on Simcoe for Perch.

There is still five weeks.
Things will get better and change to the better.
I prefer this colder weather knowing that the water won't be warming up to fast and sending those Yellow Walleye into deeper summer haunts in mid June.

I don't stir pots...c'mon Rhybak...you know that....  ::)

And no...even though we've had a mild winter here I'm done with it; and yes...I'm typically golfing by now here at home...and I know I got that picture from my buddy taken in early-April on a sunny, no-ice-anywhere Lake Kipawa.

As for walleyes going to their "deeper summer haunts"... I know nothing of what you speak of. Same patterns we used last June we've used in early-July, late-July / August...no problem catching fish, but some years better than others. But, come to think of it...last June when we were there in the first week we didn't fish much deeper than 12-14 feet...seemingly catching fish at will. I guess that is a bit shallower. I don't remember trolling through...  ;)

Ice fishing in April...don't be silly...

Mid June we generally fish out float at less that 7 feet and all we catch are Yellow Walleye.
Last July ( two weeks later) that 7 foot depth produced 90% Smallmouth Bass.

The walleye had to be found while tossing jigs and ripping the bottom.
I'm glad you talked me into buying a proper rod that was actually labeled for jigging and ripping.

Golf...never played.
There are some type of fish species biting at an given time of the year such as Rainbow trout right now.
Then Jumbo perch.
Then Lake Trout and Pike at the cottage.
Then ,eventually Yellow Walleye in Quebec.

Life is tough.

I went golfing yesterday here in Pittsburgh... weekly work golf league. Hit them decent but nothing to brag about...
Looking forward to watching the Masters this weekend for sure.

I'm waiting for someone to create the annual and official guess the "Ice Out" Date thread.

Yes...it's by far the largest number of TV hours I watch between January and December...probably 90% of all TV hours for the year. I won't leave my TV room on Sunday from about 2PM - 8PM. Can't wait.

Float fishing for them pesky 'eyes...glad you talked me into that trying that tactic Rhybak...love it...

I was kinda hoping to head to camp in a couple of weekends. I don't need the lake clear. Just the roads....here's hoping :)
Days spent fishing don't count against life :)

yup, me too.
Played golf again today after work. 9 holes. shot 51 (22 putts and 3 penalty strokes...), yikes, need either more practice or more beer to help with my shankopotomis... haha.
Great fun regardless... with any luck I won't totally embarrass myself in my work golf league this year but time will tell...
