I know it is not Kipawa but....

My first fishing trip of the year is upon me!  I leave tomorrow afternoon for a long weekend of fishing with 21 other guys at a resort close to Cobden, Ontario (about half way to Mattawa from Ottawa).

The resort is on the Ottawa river, in a large bay with a nice beach area - its called Nangor  www.nangorresort.com... I have never been there, I only know a couple of the guys, but I am anxious to fish a new location and this will allow me to go through all my gear and fine tune my boat setup for my Kipawa trip in July.   Any chance anyone here as been to Nangor?

I'm excited to pack-up and get out town and drop a line in....  a brief report of how it went will be published next week.

have fun Greg!
Looking forward to hearing the report, that place is only about 1.5 hours from our home...

I live about 20 minutes from there and there is great pike fishing close by.  If you are taking your own boat and have a gps rely on it.  There are lots of spots the water depth is shallow and not marked very well.  I have never fished walleye up in that area always just pike.  Look for bays and there will be pike.  Last year fishing the Lions club blind anglers tournament I spent the whole day in a bay called lac Creighton and was non stop action.  Pink is the Pike color up there, and use a long leader.  People even catch big Pike in the nangor's bay.  Hope that helps.

Awesome, thanks Ozzy!

I have a GPS with Maps integrated fish finder, I am not going to go speeding into anything shallow for sure...

I'll put a leader on now for sure - and try the pink out...

Just curious on how the fishing trip went at Nangor?

Greg

Hey Ozzy... trip went great... I got back yesterday afternoon (heavy rain all day - got soaked bringing the boat out of the water and putting the tarp on)...  I just logged on and have bee reading all the posts since Thursday...

My quick trip report of my first weekend fishing trip away for this season...

Fished the Ottawa river, near Cobden, Ontario at the Nangor resort...  22 guys in 7 Condos... what a blast!  I know one of the guys really well, and I know his two brothers-in-law a little.  Everyone was extremely welcoming, friendly, and just wanted to have fun.

We arrived and unpacked by 6pm Thursday evening.  Had a bite to eat and went out to fish a couple of hours before dark just in the bay in front of the resort - had a guy I just met come in my boat with me to show me the bay and he is a long time member of this group - got 6 Pike in the boat in less than 90 minutes, and 4 of them were on double headers - just by trolling around areas of the bay he was familiar with.  Stayed up late, drank several beverages and chatted, had a great time.

Friday and Saturday - both days were EXTREMELY hot and sun blasting down - lots of sunscreen and water.  Went fishing before breakfast, in the middle of the day and in the evening both days - always caught 1 or 2 fish myself, with the exception of Saturday afternoon, in the crazy heat, I got 4 in the boat and had some others on the line - mostly Pike.  I had two guys with me and one guy got 5 in the boat, and the other guy got 1 in the boat and had others on the line also - 10 in the boat all in about 3 hours of fishing, mid-day, in crazy sunlight and crazy heat.

To learn the water a little more, on Saturday afternoon, we ventured about 20 or 30 minutes downstream towards/past Fort Coulonge, Que and on Saturday evening, we ventured 20 or 30 minutes up-stream towards Pembroke.

Both evenings were great food (ate amazing all weekend actually), then a huge bomb fire on the beach - more late night beverages.

In total, I got 1 bass (still out of season so quickly removed the hook while he was still in the water and he quickly swam off), 2 small walleye (no keepers) and about 12 or 14 pike - 4 larger ones, and the rest were under 18 inches.  There were about 5 others that got off my line before getting to the boat, so all in all, pretty decent action.  I always had 1 or two other guys in my boat and they caught lots also.

The only things negative about the entire weekend - the self induced early morning headache (must be associated to the late night beverages), sleeping on a futon, the sand - pull your boat up on the sand and walk 200 feet up to your condo, sand gets everywhere, in your boat, in your sleeping bag, etc.  And the rain - it began early on Sunday morning, and I got soaked pulling the boat out and putting the tarp on and then soaked again unpacking it 2 hours later after getting home... but we have been in a drought so it was welcome (...my lawn is mostly green now, but still have some yellow burnt areas).

Comparison to Kipawa?  Its all about civilization density - most shore lines on the Ottawa river are filled with cottages and the water always has other boats (fishing boats, ski boats, pontoon boats) and jet-skis.  I would always look for the back bay which is full of weeds and has no cottages - I just like that environment more.   Kipawa on the other hand is the opposite - remote, less people/boats and lots of room, and always a quiet bay.  But hey, it is still fishing and time in my boat which I love.

I was invited back next year, and I already accepted.

I only took a couple of pictures showing the view from our deck of our condo showing the beach, our boats, and the lawn chairs around the fire pit - straight ahead, to the left (back of the bay) and to the right (opening entrance of the bay to the river - turn right after entering the main channel and head downstream (Fort Coulonge) or head left and head towards Pembroke.

I'll try to get those of my phone later and throw them up... I think its time I finally learned how to insert a picture (HA!)

I forgot to mention one of the cool highlights - the bear... went into a back bay off a side channel on the Quebec side where there are no cottages - it is just forest there is a highway running along the river (Que highway 148) and we saw a large black animal silhouette walking slowly along the shore behind a few trees - had the electric motor in so we decide to stop fishing and quietly head towards this animal - initially we were not sure if it was a bear, deer or moose.  As we got closer, the way the animal moved became obvious (thick, short legs and the "lumbering" walk) that it was a bear - we got within 50 or 60 feet to the shore right were he was walking around, then it "detected us" either heard us talking or smelled us... he looked up at us and took off into the bush.  Unfortunately my phone was back at the resort charging and my fishing partner Dave tried to take a couple pics with his iPhone but no luck.  Very cool to see...
