A question on maps...does anybody have a map that illustrates detailed borders of the zecs? Which lakes are in and out of the various zecs? And for that matter why we have so many zecs and why can't I just get one pass to visit any lake I choose. I never liked the ideas of a zec zone anyway.

I'm not sure what SgtCrabby's map looks like, but one option would be to create a map something like the one in the link below.

My background is in GIS (Geographic Information Systems).  All of the data in this map is available free of charge from the federal government and is based on the National Topographic Database at the 1:50000 scale, UTM projection.  You just need to have the correct software to work with it.  With a bit of effort, the I could probably get the ZEC Boundaries.

If there is interest and value to the outfitters, I might be able to put something together.

Another option would be to create a small site using the Google Maps API, but this is a bit more involved and might be beyond the scope of this forum.

On the StgCrabby map, Bush Country Camp is on the wrong island if there is an opportunity to correct it.

Kirk, that's an easy enough fix, just let sgtcrabby know exactly where it is... and in the next revision I'm sure he'll correct it. neither of us have ever been there so thank you for the correction.

Before the establishment of Zones d'Exploitation Controlee (ZECs) in Quebec in 1978, much of the land now within ZEC borders belonged to private fishing/hunting clubs (translated - that meant no access for any of us). You can read some background info on ZECs at http://perc.org/blog/what-world-zec

As for maps that illustrate the detailed borders of ZECs, one can always contact any ZEC of interest and order the map of their territory (nominal fee of $10 approximately). I have the maps for ZEC Kipawa and for ZEC Dumoine. A less detailed illustration of the borders of ZECs is available at http://www.reseauzec.com/carte  Click on any ZEC on the map to get an exploded map view.

TY Jay. I don't remember zec's when I used to come uo 30 yrs ago. A bit of a history lesson. I couldn't figure out why they existed. gonna look into them more. I see millions of back lakes I'd like to explore I'd like to look for some brookies in streams and small lakes.

Haven't had time to ask them, but do you think the Qc "MNR" have a list of lakes in the area with the species found in them like Ontario?

I'm sure they do. I know the zecs have lists and some maps in their territories. I spoke to the ranger in the trailer at Maniwaki last year. She said most lakes are listed as per species, many have launches. I'll ask some natives I know for advise on trout streams and lakes. I'm going up this weekend.
I will probably join zec restgo, It's right near my neck of the woods.
