I've been a good boy this year and fully expect Santa to bring me some kind of gift that I would enjoy. I typically don't have anything on my list this time of year as I tend to spoil myself through the year...if I really want something I just get it, at some point. This year is different though. I can't bring myself to purchasing this "gift" for myself, but I certainly would enjoy having one ride shotgun with me while nabbing those pesky 'eyes on Lac Kipawa in 2017. I'm talking about one of those Yeti Hopper Flip12 soft sided coolers. Nice, useful product with great reviews. I've already got the sidekick to this...the Yeti Ramber Series Coldster. Put a can or bottle of cold brew in there and your last sip WILL be cold hours later on the hottest day. Thing works like magic. My beers never tend to last that long, but it's good insurance in case I let it sit too long in the sun.

So....what is everyone "asking for" from Santa this year (other than good health and peace on Earth)? I'm always interested in hearing what those of similar interests are eyeing-up...

Therefor, I am outfitting my new boat slowly.
All I need now are my Two Scotty 1116 downriggers and two Berts 6" pedestal Bases.
Pretty well everything else is purchased.

As always, my family knows that a gift certificate to any outdoor supplier that sells fishing stuff is what to stuff my stocking with.  Always the right color and I never have to return them cause I gained a few pounds. I always carry on about how thoughtful my benefactors are which guarantees next years gift. However... Don't ask how I know....  My secret Santa has obtained a new 9" color Garmin locator with side view/down view/GPS and a bazillion pre loaded maps.  Just wait for the excited outburst of sheer joy when I  open that!   Merry Christmas everyone!

I, like Rhybak, am slowly outfitting the new boat and my parents asked me what they should buy, I described the few things I need and suggested a gift certificate at the boat dealer - mom just said "how about money to buy that stuff"... perfect.

Whats left to buy/install...
- 4 Scotty adjustable rod holders
- 2 suction cup dock bumpers
- small/simple front fish-finder to use connect to the transducer in the electric motor (I basically only use the front fish finder for a quick glance at the depth & water temperature)

Can't wait to the season opens in May!!!

I also ordered a pre-rigged MinnKota but my understanding is that the transducer isn't that good .
I'm going to use my Garmin Transducer with the Electric Motor mounting bracket.
Why have a bad signal if not necessary?

Hey Rhybak,

I had a Minnkota on my old boat, and the transducer was always fine - never had any issues with it just reading depth and temperature, so I'll give it a try.

What I didn't like about my old Minnkota - I had the stupid thing for about 9 years - and every 2nd or 3rd year - it blew the main control/circuit board, I had to pay the local authorized service garage to replace the board -  I replaced it 3 times - first time was under $200, next time was about $225, last time was almost $250 - I still have all the receipts.

I have no idea if this is a bigger problem or just because I would always push the boat into deep weeds and sometimes hit sand.

Best Bang for the Buck was the Coleman Extreme 5 cooler. I've been using Coleman Extreme coolers for 4 years now. I have two Coleman Extreme 5 coolers and one Coleman Extreme 6 cooler. I always keep a block of ice in an Coleman Extreme 5 cooler in the boat - keeps harvested walleye and drinks quite cool.

After stumbling around Bass Pro last week for a few hrs I realized there is is nothing I really need. Well, maybe a new GoreTex rain coat if the can of spray I picked up doesn't "fix" my old one. Only fishing related thing I "hope" for is that my usual June crew can switch to a late July or early August trip this year. Flying into Anchorage the end of May to tour the Denali, Valdez, Kenai Peninsula area for a couple of weeks. Hey T Bone , is your crew heading up again this summer???

Interesting science behind that study, though I'm always skeptical about "independent" studies like that. All I prefer to go on is experience. I'm certain the number of open-close cycles has enormous impact on a cooler's performance. I've used a Coleman Extreme 5 for a few years now. Keep it closed, it keeps ice for several days. Open and close it 20 times per hour like we do grabbing for the next cold Bleue, not so much. Probably true for any cooler at any price point. After looking at the Yeti soft-side 12 packer at Cabela's the other day I think I'll save my money or at least apply it to another expense area. It's nice, but after all, it is only a cooler.

Look at Orion Coolers, if there's interest I know the owners and see if we can get a discount.
I don't need one as I have a 100 qt Extreme I put two blocks in and good for ever... as long as it's out of the sun. Boat also has a huge great cooler, block of ice lasts forever and keeps refreshments cold.
