Good morning,

So our trip in September has 3 other family members coming with us, we have Alwaki Lodge booked, we stayed here on the may long weekend, it was great! And I'm really trying hard to get back up there before the September trip.

My conundrum is I have 2 working Labradors and they can't go a week without exercise, it's just not fair. I'm wondering if anybody knows a good place to take a break, where we can walk and swim them, so they get some fun to!

Or maybe someone can suggest a different private cottage to rent with a boat for my brother-in-law and his wife.

If you don't want to advertise any locations just PM me :)

T-Bone

Not a lot of 'open' running land that I know of anywhere. In fact...I can't think of any. But...

From Alwaki...head up through the Turtle Chutes toward Alwaki's Whispering Pines Outpost cabin. Head past that cabin and make a left around the point up toward Hunter's Point. As you start you trek north keep an eye out on the right side of the boat. Not entirely sure how far up it is toward HP (not very far though) there are a couple beautiful sandy beaches that gently slide across the shoreline and into the water. One actually comes out into a penisula of sorts (that one is closer to HP). Would be a perfect spot for a quick picnic and a little dog time. You can see them on Google Maps Satellite view. Check it out.

I was going to suggest the same location as T-Bone... great spot, I have pictures of us swimming there last year with my old boat on the beach.

A few other areas, but smaller:

- right behind Thompson island (where alwaki is on) is the Sand Banks - at the end of the sand banks to your left (if you were driving from Thompson towards sand banks) - there is practically a 90 degree corner in the shore-line - and a small beach there (it is much closer) than going through the chute.  I have seen campers with fires going there and lots of shore lunchs happening there.

- if you do go through the chute, where T-bone says to turn left past the Outpost, instead, turn right - there is a small opening to a long channel, which leads around turtle island.  There is a big sand-bank and beach area right at the opening of that channel (don't go screaming fast into that channel unless you know where you are going).

- if you follow the same channel around Turtle island, once you are past the channel and it opens up into a nice big lake (good fishing back there) there are two beach areas on the left hand side in the middle of the turtle island (roughly in the middle of the lake.

Good luck.  I will be at alwaki in 29 days... can't wait.

Hey Guys!

Thanks so much for the info!.. I'm gonna come up in the next few weeks for short weekend and do some scouting cough cough fishing LOL!

Really appreciate the help!

Thompson island is 86 acres; Alwaki uses a fraction of that. Why not grab a camp coffee in the morning in a to go cup and explore the island?
Before bedtime-do the same.
Its not like you can get lost.....when you hit water....keep left.

Pretty thick bush on that island; I've explored it before a bit...fair amount of deadfall and the like...some very small trails though. Last year there was a bear on the island when we were there, so don't go in with the assumption that you are 'safe' or isolated from that type of threat even thought you're on an island.

GregL..if you have labs...they love water...just chuck a fetch toy off the dock and let them fly into the water then swim for it. One of my favorite memories up there were the dog races at Corbeau Lodge...they'd fire fetch toys out of a gun about 500' into the water and posse of dogs would swim out to it and race back. We'd place bets on who the winner would be. So funny!!!

There could be bears anywhere you guys have suggested too. Especially if you plan on bringing the food to him.

The smell of those dogs will make a bear leave the island.

I'm not worried about bears, I can run faster than my brother in law. I HOPE! LOL!

Have you ever seen how fast your brother in law runs when a bear is after him?  That can make a big difference in speed!   ;D ;D

Smile, every one will wonder what you have been up to.

The couple that stayed in cabin 4 at Alwaki last year says there is a picnic spot up towards Fox Island.  I'm not sure how much open room there is but they were pretty impressed.  I was planning on doing a little more exploring up that way this year.  Maybe someone that has bee up there can elaborate on the location.

GregL

Thanks Ozzy30! That's great!

I'm hoping to get up for a weekend to do some exploring before our week in Sept!

We head up this Canada day to Alwaki again so I will head up that way and check it out also and report back.  We usually just take the stove with us and cook while we troll for lakers in the afternoon but I am curious myself about that spot.
