Other Species

Most of us go to the Kipawa area to fish for Walleye, Pike and Lakers.  What other species have you caught?  Do you target anything else...keep anything else?  This past trip I caught two nice sized perch trolling a gold hot n' tot (don't know how they expected to eat that hot 'n tot!).  We have in the past also caught some type of white, bottom-feeder fish...although there are less of these or we just don't catch them anymore.  I've also heard that a few burbot have been caught in Watson.

Perch!! I love looking for them with an ultra light combo. A small jig with a piece of worm or on a plain hook with a splitshot to weigh it down. Anywhere less then 10 FOW off a point will do. Nothing huge but a few at 6-10 inches. A great way to waste an afternoon.

We have caught a few perch the last couple of years also - but other than pike, lakers and walleye, that's about it.

I've also heard that a few burbot have been caught in Watson.

While at Alwaki a week or so ago, someone there caught a Burbot trolling for Lakers. I think it was someone from T Bones group?

Yep...Marco bot the burbot. And Mattie got a fallfish out at Sunnyside on a slow, stagnant afternoon. I got a few perch during the week. We hit for the cycle except for a laker.

By surprise, I've caught a couple of perch on a lure (lure was almost as big as they were), and more chubs than we like to admit to.

My son in law and I both caught a couple perch while at Alwaki a couple weeks ago, none more that a few inches. Just for the sake of mentioning it, perch fishing in south central Lake Erie has been tremendous now for years. Fish are 8-12" and plentiful. I have a lot of friends who specifically target perch in lake Erie, great eats!

On Grassy Lake - we have caught several fallfish (chub) and even a few ling.

But mostly walleye and pike - I have never caught a bass in that lake.

We've never caught bass on Watson either.

@NortonJoe  I was in the boat when the Burbot was caught with Marco. It was released. Caught in close to 100 feet of water near the bottom right in front of Alwaki main dock while drifting... They stink. I could smell it from the other side of the boat when it was brought in. T- bone should have a picture if he is able to get them uploaded.

We catch burbot off my dock late in the evening. If they are big enough, we fillet them and eat'em. They are good.
We've also caught ling cod. Again, if they're big enough, into the pan they go.
We also catch walleye too, the odd pike...usually a monster and have seen school of fall fish swim by.

Interestingly, a few summer's ago, there was a momma duck with no less than 12-14 ducklings swimming by.
She'd take them east in the morning and back west in the evening. Then one day she only had 4 ducklings left so
we could only assume a good size pike had a feast.

I was really hoping someone would mention speckled trout . I had always hoped that there were some in the area of 3 Seasons

 I've heard the lake holds specks, god luck finding them tho. Never heard anyone here catching one.
